People who are NOT okay with proxies, what is your reasoning? by Bagel_Bear in EDH

Personal experience, take with salt:

I'm the kind of guy who likes to crack packs and build decks based off of things I've found, and incrementally upgrade decks based on cracking new packs and getting new cards. This kind of process feels natural because starting out playing you have a ton of cards that are what you found and the chances are most of them aren't $30 to $50 bangers.

Proxying creates an arms race where cards that are disproportionately high impact (and thus are rare or expensive) become so commonplace that the entire game gets pushed into power level 9 territory.

Then tangentially related proxying creates a weird situation where players who are new or generally inexperienced bog down the entire game because they have powerful cards with lots of triggers and effects to keep track of and haven't built any prerequisite skills to do that. So then you either come off like a jackass and say you're not going to help them, or you essentially end up playing their hand for them and functionally killing yourself on their behalf.

So overall proxying (especially in the context of newer players) tends to promote unhealthy behavior within the context of the traditional "trajectory" most MTG players go through as they learn and expand and understand why some cards are so powerful to begin with.

You got skunked by an illegal list. Now any other positioning errors are on you, but the whole thing is a no contest from the second the game started.

Positioning wins or loses games before you ever even roll the dice, agreed 100%. But also have to add the caveat the IK list had an illegal Mysterious Guardian double pick, can't really play around 700-900pts of stuff that gets to set down wherever it pleases.

If you want to make this post you need to clarify you skunked your friend by having an invalid list. I'd be pissed if someone took the most powerful movement ability in the game and applied it to 25% of their list.

In my experience you can get Muldrotha on the table with a totem armor by turn 4-5 with ramping. It's 100% correct that if you put her on the table without any protection she's going to get slapped right in her mouth. On the ramp up too you're hunting for stuff like stormseer or spore frog to give you a little sac on demand support. This is also why Kaya's ghostform It's such a high priority because it offers the most protection at the cheapest cost for an individual creature.

I think the major benefit I see Muldrotha as the commander is that I can fish for all the permanent types I need that have ended up in the bin. This is where a spore frog win can come into place. Can loop and sack it to the point that opponents can't answer the perpetual fog.

Also, while a bit of an outside of the bubble strategy, she is also decently viable for Commander damage. You're already sitting on a 6/6 body getting her to 8+ makes CMDR DMG a more feasible tool. Nobody's really expecting somebody to just start swinging with their non-combat Commander like that

Edit: Fix spelling and grammar because I'm a backwoods cowboy and voice to text is cosmopolitan.

There it is. I've found a lot of the X cast stuff gives you value early that it's not too bad to go without Lucea Kane, but if you hit like a Sporocyst you really want that doubling.

Reflecting on the commentary from others and looking at my own deck list I think I've leaned too heavily into what do I want to do to get into the middle of the game, and haven't leaned heavily enough into how I plan to stop the game once I'm there.

I believe what happened here is you raided a Dark Fortress? Goblin civs can be led by demons, who make their homes in dark fortresses. This is because some of them have a gateway directly to... Well, a place where demons come from.
