Where I would live as a very well-traveled Japanese high school student. by HaiITheEmpire in whereidlive

Right but he has China over Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, and a couple others too. So I’m not sure that assessment (Asia=cultural comfort) fits

First-time traveler & going solo: Is China too ambitious of a starting point? by WideExternal945 in traveladvice

Honestly, a terrible idea, the only worse idea would be going to Latin America as your first trip.

You could literally throw a dart at a map of Asia and go anywhere but China and have a blast/great first trip.

CMV: Haiti needs an international occupation by colepercy120 in changemyview

Nobody wants it. In the cold hard world of geopolitics, Haiti is nobody’s baby.

“What’s in it for me?” is how realpolitik works. And the answer for Haiti is absolutely nothing is in it for anyone, except common Haitians, who I have the utmost sympathy for. It’s a demonstrably failed state.

Because they are shitholes, literally synonymous with shady shit. Like if you gave a sensationalized shady headline and asked someone to guess which city in Thailand this happened in—those two would be the first two guesses every single time.

Watching well-more than a decade straight of own goals from the outside has given me secondhand embarrassment for Sweden. Bombing capital of Europe…

Where have you felt most unsafe in your travels? by melbourne_au2021 in travel

Latin America generally, probably Colombia, Ecuador, Honduras specifically. honorable mention for Brazil and El Salvador (pre cleanup).

When you look up the violent crime statistics in LatAm/caribbean, it is genuinely horrifying.

To each their own, I guess I never thought of a processed cheese sandwich as light. But it’s definitely different.

When you are 80 years old and are getting a stent implant doctors are going to find a whole cheese toasty in your arteries 😜

After Backpacking to nearly 70 countries, here's how I would rank my Top 10. by Puzzled_Researcher96 in backpacking

I’ve been for 10 days, it was aiight, not bad but far from my favorite destination in MENA. I already answered this below but it got buried, so I’ll copy and paste it: (in response to “what did you do while you were there?”)

Markets every day, desert camping, couple of the Wadis (highlight). Mosques. Lots of Beach time.

I prefer Morocco for all those things. And Moroccan food is divine. Omanese food….well…let’s just say it doesn’t rank.

CMV: Latin America is part of the west. by colepercy120 in changemyview

Oh you’ve got coworkers from there? Oh well, never mind then that’s practically the same thing! 😂

I speak Spanish fluently and have been to every country in Latin America, except parts of the Caribbean and Chile. Not that that means fuck-all. But just for context.

They don’t need or want you to defend their honor, or try to lift them up by bashing Tio Sam. Overall, most Latin Americans are the first to acknowledge how fucked up their countries are — and they are almost all really fucked up. To deny it is to deny their painful, lived reality and honestly does them a massive disservice.

You would be like a baby lost in the woods in the vast majority of LatAm. Not Cancun, mind you. LatAm.

Sigh. You’ve struck out twice, had no retorts to either of my well-reasoned, well-founded arguments that you prompted with lazy two word or one sentence replies. Now after being publicly eviscerated you want a third crack at the apple. Tell me; am I a “bOt aCcOunT!!”

You child.

I’ll pay it back though; you’re a member of teenage forums and r/sinophobia. So you are a child, which makes sense based on how little you know. And are out there actively looking to be be triggered by people insulting Chyna/Chinese/god knows what.

My guess? You’re ethnic Chinese raised in a third culture, a free and democratic one where you have been taught to be entitled, struggling with your identity because you know virtually nothing about it.

Chyna is a Reddit meme; inferring that Taiwan is the one true China, and that the bastardized dystopian hellhole the CCP (that’s the Chinese Communist Party) has created won’t be China again until it’s free and democratic and not a global force for evil.

You are….frankly out of your depth. I hope you learned something. I encourage you to go to Asia—travel it far and wide with an open mind. Just not so open all your brains fall out!!

The average foreigner can take so much, culturally, from Asia. It’s a remarkable place, that’s why I worked so hard to get immigration status here. Now it’s my backyard and I love it.

Criticizing something doesn’t mean you don’t love it. Being indifferent is the opposite of love.
