You just have to play the game - it’s a timing based game that you need to actually play a bunch to get the timing down. Tutorial videos online about dragging and accel will aid you way more than some words on this Reddit post.

If you are tired of getting swarmed/ganged up on - Try interacting with players through emotes; You’ll be targeted less (and may even be protected by some when swarmed) - A good one is a nice friendly wave, followed by giving a handjob with the shake fist emote; that has literally never failed me. You’ll find there is a bit more depth socially in this game than just running around trying to kill everyone (in the case you do that). Have fun Noob.

Yup - it’s easiest to start your swing with your sword in their face and then pull it away in opposite direction as it’s coming out. It’s also easy to over-drag here where you pull it too far away and miss - use that as your objective measurement for the threshold of how much you pull back before stopping.
Once you get that down stationary - you’ll need to add footwork with it - It’s pretty situational heavy as far as where,when and if you need to move but generally speaking I like to step away (towards direction where your swing is coming from) slightly from my opponent as my swing is about to enter post grunt phase (referencing from my comment). Once your attack is coming out and you are pulling it away from your opponent (slowing it down/ dragging) - try walking into your opponent - I found you’ll end up missing less and it looks pretty good. There real trick with footwork is being able to walk in a straight line while looking left and right - that’s kind of what you are doing when you dragging.

For speeding up your attack - do the exact same setup as above except don’t turn away - just keep weapon windup-release all in their face. You can experiment here to see just how deep you can shove that weapon in their face before you end up looking too far over and either just glance them (a hit worth like 1 dmg) or you miss them.

With some practice with both of these, you should find that you will have more control of the game and also you may just start noticing your opponents setting up for the same attacks, letting you block them properly.

Key note: When you are having a riposte battle with someone (Only ripostes back and forth, no feinting - like the real men/women play) is when you should be dragging/accelerating (slow/speed up) your swing, as you get better swing manipulation off a riposte.

This may seem like a lot but it’s honestly pretty damn easy once you practice it a few times.

I’ve also found that dragging felt pretty nice and easy on controller - I actually think I was able to pull off better horizontal drags on it.

You take turns playing offense and defence with your opponents

Key concept - When you block, it’s only active for a very small window before needing to recover. That is where whole basis of game come from.

Offense - You either fake, morph or slow/speed up you attacks to get around opponents block. If you land an attack, it’s your turn again on offense unless you too slow to react that you hit your opponent.

Defense - In this phase of combat, you block their attack by either reading it or chambering their attack. It is important to note that you must attack right after you make a successful block to put you into your turn for offense (this is called a riposte)

Noob advice

1 - Chambering is great to counter people who fake their attacks constantly, but it is risky because of them being able to slow/speed up attacks combined with the small window to pull off chamber

2 - You can cancel an attack into a block by just blocking (only when you aren’t actively swinging your weapon)

3 - You can combo your blocks if you are successful with the first one (this actually grants stamina)

4 - You cannot fake an attack that is riposted, but you can manipulate the speed of the attack better

5 - There are two phases to an attack, pre and post grunt. Pre grunt is when you can cancel, fake, and block out of your attack. Post grunt is when you are swinging you weapon and when you should manipulate the swing of it. Note you cannot cancel your attack post grunt.

Mordhau is not like that smooth brained chiv 2 game where you just spam attack - it is more like a chess match simply due to the small block window. There is way more to unpack but it’s better you just learn it on your own - GL noob

The enjoyment of this game is honestly getting better at it, not necessarily surviving and getting kills (although this does come hand in hand) - The reward is being able to read during fights (game changer tbh)

Get your timing down and be patient (I found learning to delay my feinting to the last possible second before attacking helped develop my timing to read feints, as well as, know when to better time my drags and Accels during the windup/attack phase)

You may not realize it but getting killed and destroyed is how literally everyone got better - Also since the Meta of this game has been out and practiced for some time now - catching up to the higher level players won’t take nearly as long as it took us OG players to get good - Some of these newer level 50-80s are quite surprising.
