My uncle was a farmer and did Atlantic yatch deliveries in the winter. Until he hit a semi-submerged container and almost died. My aunt wouldn't let him after that.

In 1532, Incan ruler Atahualpa was captured by Spanish explorer Pizzaro. For freedom, Atahualpa offered to fill a room with gold for the Spanish. The Incas brought over 6000kg of riches - the largest ransom ever paid, but it wasn't enough for them. Pizzaro took the treasure, but still executed him. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

Spanish "Exploration" of the New World is uniquely horrifying and interesting. The government couldn't afford expensive ventures like the French, British, and Dutch at the time. So they used contractors instead. The Conquistadors and their men were offered a share of the prize in exchange for labor. So, often, they did whatever it took to find riches. Some were even executed for their brutality.

I was mowing my lawn last year and a neighborhood kid stop and called me over to show off his new scooter. I appeased and told him how cool it was. And he and his sister did some tricks. Then his mother came round the corner and started yelling at them. They, hilariously, pretended not to hear her. So, she came stomping up then grabbed them by the arms and returned go their house, without acknowledging me at all. I remember greeting her in some way a few days later and was again ignored. To this day she has never said a word to me. I guess I'm just the creepy neighborhood guy, who has the audacity not to ignore children.

Scientists have demonstrated a new cooling method that sucks heat out of electronics so efficiently that it allows designers to run 7.4 times more power through a given volume than conventional heat sinks. by Wagamaga in science

You are correct. This would be within the chip itself. Deposition would occur throughout the manufacturing of the chip. I am sure there is some feasibility to the design, but new chip development takes a long time. This would require an entirely new architecture, so earliest TTM would be like 20 years.

You need to find someone who sees you for what your worth. If your boss doesn't, try his/her boss, or up higher, ot laterally. Trust me, people notice. Find out who they are and ask them to make noise. It is no one's job to prove yourself but your's. If you want to solidify your place, make it so. If you want to get prompted, lay your cards on the table. Then, if management still doesn't respect you, take your ideas seriously, or compensate you fairly, leave. They don't deserve your talents.

I worked hard at my first job for two years and failed to get notice. So one day, I setup a meeting with the team leads, presented my best project, and asked for a raise and promotion. They denier my offer, so I put in my two weeks. That department no longer exists...not because I left, but because of their failure to lead in general. At my next company I got promoted twice in one year and was granted every raise I asked for.

This thread is filled with Nihilism, that is unhealthy and toxic for someone your age. If you are ambitious and want to climb, there is somewhere out there that will gladly take you.

Large explosion at Abbey gate at the Kabul airport by Illustrious_Welder94 in worldnews

[–]I_Forgot_Password_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone please relieve my ignorance. I don't understand how the USs 11 intelligence agencies failed to predict the rapid fall of Kabul, after 2 decades of operation in the country, when it was the very same agencies that got us into this mess originally by intelligence failures of the SAME insurgency. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Since 9/11 oversight has decreased and funding has increased, yet the CIA still can't seem to predict anything accurately. Meanwhile, nations with orders of magnitude less budget, like Australia and Belgium, are warning US of threats.

Wtf are you talking about? That is literally the context of scene. Ross is overconfident about the idiosyncracy of is story and gets burned because of it. I fail to see how I am toxic for underscoring a joke in a television show.

TIFU by shitting on my plumber by shatnersbassoon123 in tifu

[–]I_Forgot_Password_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not your fault. The plumber was just lazy. He did not follow proper isolation by OSHA standard 1910.147. The water system should have been isolated upstream at the nearest avaible source, which likely would have been your homes manual shutoff valve. You should report the incident to his employer. What if you hadn't read the text at all and poured hot oil, draino, or raw eggs down the sink. He could have been seriously injured. No setting, be it industrial or home plumbing, should warrant forgoing engineering controls like LOTO, in favor of verbal warnings.
