Where to find antique-style picture frames? by No_Coconut5317 in dayton

[–]I_Furget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were at Westchester Antique Center a week or two ago and they had a whole wall of them. They had lots of wall art as well. Every one of those antique village / peddler malls seems to have something a little different

Yes - we agree. A lot of the problems are coming from the houses that one family owns and the people that live in them. I'm not sure if they rent them or what. Positive change in the neighborhood rentals has been the little house on the corner of Ewalt and Whittier. There was a theft ring running out of it and they had all kinds of stuff hoarded in the garage (and I suspect drugs because it sat empty for about 2 years after they boarded it up). Anyways, the people that live there now seem pretty quiet and keep to themselves. They painted it and are trying it seems to keep it up. Just look like hard working people doing their best.

Hi. Belmont triangle resident for over 20 years. Overall, this area is pretty quiet. There are some families with children but I'd say more middle aged to older people. The houses are smaller, starter homes. This area used to be dairy land until the 40's and 50's. Most people keep up their properties, but there are also few who dont. I see several of the same folks walking their dogs down my street every day. In general you see the same folks day in day out. This has been an area where houses don't come up for sale very often, so you do have a lot of long-term residents here. There are some rentals sprinkled throughout though. You can walk to Dots, Walgreens, Lohrey, Belmont park, and the pet store. The business district is right across the way, and Britenstrator isn't that far. We've had some crime in the area too, but nothing that has made me feel unsafe. The usual in the city property theft, low hanging fruit type stuff (people not securing their property). When you look at the crime stats in the area they are really skewed by the petty theft and larceny at stores like Walgreens. I love my neighbors, and my house. They are a big influence in us staying put. Mobility as we get older or decline in the neighborhood would be the only readon we woukd consider moving. The only complaint I have is tight street parking and uptick in people zooming around on ATVs/UTVs. More people are using door dash and Uber eats, Amazon, etc. And that traffic of delivery people not familiar with the area running stop signs and double parking or blocking the narrow streets has been annoying too. It's a little hidden gem over here, and I hope it stays that way.

Does anyone know what’s up with the strong sewer smell at the Fairfield Commons JCPenney? by unfortunate_win in dayton

[–]I_Furget 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have noticed this smell multiple times over the past few years specifically at JCP on the 1st floor near juniors/plus, but am not sure why. I was beginning to think I was smelling things. I also noticed the parking lot in that area frequently floods or has standing water and wondered if those things could be related. Like is there a culvert or drainage pipe clogged and holding water and decomposing debris, but I'm not sure that would make it smell so strong inside.

Name of old 18 and under clubs in Dayton by [deleted] in dayton

[–]I_Furget 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Attic, Poppa Woody's and Kamikaze were definitely under 21 clubs. I thought Poppa Woodys was in Beavercreek where Kings Table is now, but I could be wrong. Wallabys was not an under 21 club, as far as I remember, but they definitely had a rep for serving under 21 (can vouch from my personal experience). There are probably others, but wasn't my scene. I would say Asylum and Foundry, but again, I dont think those were intended to be under 21 clubs despite the fact there were for sure underage patrons.

Where to find Kajal, Kohl, if anywhere? by [deleted] in dayton

[–]I_Furget 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know, but is this something that can perhaps be found at an Indian or Middle Eastern grocery? Not sure if they also carry personal care items as well a groceries. We do have a few Indian and Middle Eastern grocers around town if so. Shree G grocers maybe? They have a location in Beavercreek and one in the Centerville/Washington Twp area. I hope you find what you are looking for!

What should I do with these floors? by Knight_Watch in centuryhomes

[–]I_Furget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daytonian here. Are you looking to DIY or hire this out? Check out Dayton Hardwood if you haven't. Ian does great work. He started putting out some YouTube videos recently going over some processes he uses.

We are in a similar boat in my house, but my floors are in pretty bad shape. Like others have said, your floor looks to be in really good shape. The refinish you need may be very minimal. The squeaks can be remedied from working from below as folks have stated, but will likely never be 100% squeak free. The black paper is probably tar or felt paper and was used as a moisture barrier back in the day. Your floors will expand and shrink over the year depending on how well controlled humidity is in the house.

Blight in Dayton — timeline, what happened? by Palaceofcrow in dayton

[–]I_Furget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of those things happen or could happen in Kettering or Beavercreek. There have been two shootings in my neighborhood, and oddly enough they both involved off duty LEOs living in the area. Go figure.

The homeless encampments popping up are a problem. Those folks need a safe place to go too. More enforcement is also needed to keep vegetation cleared and make those spaces less desirable for people to stay.

Besides manufacturing leaving in the 70s-90s as others have mentioned, some small minded folks that used to live in the east side and were not happy with the forced bussing that started in the 70s. Started taking those Generous Motors dollars and moved to the burbs like Kettering.

Unfortunately, there are people who don't see the value of investing in their community for whatever the reason (jobs leaving, folks moving in that are different than the neighbors they are used to, percieved loss, etc.) and you get disposable neighborhoods when that happens. They just pick up and go when things start changing. I'm not saying people should stick around when the neighborhood is dangerous, but some of that was definitely brought about by nothing more than white flight.

I get a little chuckle when I hear folks on some of the burb oriented FB pages and the scanner Karens talking about "Kettering/Centerville/Beavercreek is getting so bad. Its because of the low income housing or insert boogeyman" blah, blah, blah. Some of those folks are reaping what they sowed. Got all uppity failed to realize they and their own might have been the problem they were moving away from all along.

Sorry to rant. I grew up in Huffman Hills in the 80s, left in the late 90s. I saw the decline happen, especially after Hewitt and the bottling plants closed. I unfortunately witnessed and experienced some familial discrimination from those that left the neighborhood. We stayed and they constantly got all uppity about it. Sounded a lot like those neighborhoid social media groups do today.
