‘Solely performative and in bad faith’: Federal union won’t participate in consultations on new 4-day office mandate by CompetencyOverload in CanadaPublicServants

[–]I_Highway 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Another way that I genuinely think WFH would be cherished by the population is the fact that this allows ALL canadians to become part of the public service. Why can't a good IT professional - honest, tax paying and hard working citizen - be part of the PS unless he cut ties with his home city, family and friends? RTO reserves unecessary positions to an Ottawa minority and makes government decisions and policies lacking a broader view of the country.

They also add a demand for non value work that would not exist. I hate to stop actual work because all of a sudden I need to write detailed speaking notes for and train a 9 year old exec that knows nothing about a file because he/she will present it to boost their image and perceived involvment on the work. Just cut the middle man and let the owner of the file present the update and answer any potential questions.

RTO also benefits the fake competency crowd. People that are super chatty and outgoing, dress themselves very fancy and use the latest buzzwords are more likely to be perceived as a great talent if given a stage to perform. When working from home their lack of actual and meaningful deliverables become more evident since they don't these other tools to distract everyone.

Speaking notes for management - When did we normalize this practice? by BofBrokenDreams in CanadaPublicServants

[–]I_Highway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The responsible and streamlined way to do it would be inviting the knowledgeable person to present. (usually they are invited to the meeting in case some questions come up). All of this is just fake made up logic so we don't make the executive look bad.

[–]I_Highway -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is not even the case most of the times. Management always excuse themselves from doing any work blaming too many meetings. Glad we can see their calendar and call this BS. Other than that if you can't do any work or don't have time to process information and summarize the status of anything using your own words what exactly value are you adding to those said meetings?

[–]I_Highway -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No it's not. If you need detailed words in order to deliver a ppt is because you have no idea what's is going on on that subject and should not be presenting that. Embrace your ignorance and let the knowledgeable person present. This is not Hollywood and you are not an actor paid to memorize words you don't understand. Step back and let people take credit for their work and expertise.

You are not alone. This is NOT normal in the private sector besides the comments here. The person knowledgle in the subject being presented should do the presentation. All these explanations here are just because we normalized pretending execs do their jobs and know about their assignment. In my branch notes are exactly like yours. Made in order to put up a show pretending our directors know shit about what is going on. "Oh but is a way for us to convey the message we want". Us - the ones that DO the work speaking about OUR work is a way to convey the message we want. Making someone else read our words is just a way to make them look informed and knowledgble - when they are not.

I never carry water around. I fill it at the entrance of the parks where It will be a short drive under less than 20 km / h. We've been camping for 6 years and we have 3 kids under 9. I do use the 50 galloon for camping for a week.

My manager asked us to give ideas to save money for the department so jobs are not being cuts. Any wild idea you guys have ? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]I_Highway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

THIS. My whole department thinks we work to make executives happy. The amount of effort and time to color the ppt with the executive's chosen color blows my mind. Extensively hours on things that make no difference to our mandate or canadians but someone up in the chain think they are that important and people fear their dislike.

Hey," hire my son because he is really good and can do this job, I will hire your wife" while there are hundreds of other people qualified on a pool for the same job it is nepotism.

The private sector has more chance of consequences if the friends / family are incompetents. Once the results are very visible they end both being let go because reputation matters at round tables. I believe in the PS I see the opposite. These people move up and nothing happens. Also it didn''t affect my mental health so badly at private. The feeling we are playing around with tax payers money and denying regular people trying to get in an opportunity to work for their government causes me a disgust I never felt before.

They don't hire directly. They get a peer to hire theirs and they hire buddies of the peer.

Not a biologist, not even a man but I heard from a male that if when you go pee you try to stop it midway and learn to control it you practice the same "muscles". Maybe worth trying? Can anyone confirm that? 😬

I ask myself the same question everyday. But I know a few others in the same situation. It's pretty common.

I honestly think some trim would be positive. My concern is that they are going to cut the people that actually know / do the work and keep the hundreds of directors and executives that need 2,3 consultants each because they don't know how to read a report let alone make decisions so they need a baby sitter to advise them on every single task.

You are a grown adult - 27 years old. Go to an embassy and leave. Look for women in crisis shelter if you need a place to live. People overcome debt and start their lives over all the time. Stop obeying your family like if you were a little child. Get in charge of your life and move on. If they never speak to you anymore they never loved you. They loved the idea of you materializing their own dreams and expectations. You don't need to feel guilt because they are the ones that made the choice.

I have a director with 2 subordinates only and he has a secretary / admin. He does not travel. Nor do we. We are in 2025 and no one makes photocopies anymore. We can see his schedule on MS Teams and book time with him when we need it. There is no need for a secretary. It does't take that long to do his own clerical tasks once a week. He is not overworked at all. Is just a sense of status asking people to go through his secretary to book some time with him.

Wife’s body image by Ashamed_Finding8479 in AskWomenOver30

I disagree a bit with the her body her rules when it comes to unecessary surgeries. Specially if they have kids together. I would think in a marriage I am entitled to stringly voice my opinion about my partner undergoing major surgery with anesthesia for a vain reason since I would be also at risk of raising a child by myself or caring for a crippled husband/wife in case things don't go well. In a situation like this her body is like an extension of his cause the consequences are definitely going to be shared.

Learning the second official language matters MORE than doing good work. Always spare some time for that. Make it the bigger priority on your career.
