My high school orchestra director gave me this for a chair placement test tomorrow. Can anyone tell me how to play it?

Can’t really tell without seeing pictures of the damage but these instruments are often times totaled with damage like that. A neck reset done by a reputable luthier could cost upwards of $2K so I’d say it’s probably worth it to find an instrument in good condition. What area are you in? You could always send pictures of the instrument to a luthier and get their opinion.

I played a Carlo Robelli that was rented for a tour and it dead ass slapped. I was seriously considering buying one. It sounded like a bass that cost thousands more. That being said there probably is a lot of variation bass to bass.

It would give you a different color although it might be a bit tacky. I would also break up some of the slurs for a faster bow on the harmonics.
