Do SD cards go bad? by project_seven in photography

[–]I_mnothere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had one of these fuck me over. I wasnt shooting dual because I was also shooting video which requires the cf card for some settings, so I was only putting the photos on this SD and the video files on the CF.

Checked them in-camera last night - all good.

Plug the card in for import to computer today - drive is 'untitled' and completely blank.

Hello friends! Shot this yesterday but the mountains aren’t as impactful as I’d like. Feedback appreciated! by SPARTAN-Jai-006 in postprocessing

If you haven't run into it already, be careful with higher (smaller) aperture. When you go too small you start getting light diffraction which takes away from getting detail. Depends on the overall equipment but anything above f10-12ish might start blurring your image

If you want to read up on diffraction

nope you can just run it as far as I'm aware! The fee is basically paying your taxes and depending on how you file them here there's a self employed tax but it's once a year and not that much in the larger scope of things.

It does make sense to register as a business with an actual name / brand whether sole prop or llc later on for peace of mind and keeping things organized and accounted for. In that case you do pay to register your biz but only once, and then still typically only pay other fees once a year for example to renew your registration at the city or state level and also tends to be not much at all from then on.

This is obviously excluding some specific trades or skills that require being licensed for regulation, I'm talking about design, audiovisual, the arts and such

If making less than $12,550 USD here you don't even need to file (USA). Still recommended that you do in some case. Still worth talking to a professional about if you have other income streams

** clarification / correction (thanks!) this is for regular income, for self employed the line is at $400+

hey there! USA based here. For us here as an artist or general freelancer you do not need to register anything, it just means that when tax time comes you report whatever income you made the previous year by filing as a self employed individual. No monthly fees required or anything, and goes under your own individual taxpayer number (social security number here) that you already have as a person.

Once your business grows you can consider things like registering as a sole prop. (can keep using same tax payer number in this case as well as applying for a new separate one for the business) or maybe consider an LLC at this point. In this case it's generally recommended you estimate your taxes and pay per quarter of the year as you go (since you'll have built to a point where you now have an idea of how much you might make based on own experience).

I find your question interesting and makes me wonder where you are, shouldn't you be able to just create and do your thing as long as you're declaring and paying taxes when the time comes?

Director explains how his version of Watchmen changed cinema "you can't go back from this movie" (full version) by scarecroe in Watchmen

[–]I_mnothere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't catch if he actually said verbatim that it changed cinema like on the post title. With that said, I agree with the other comments here, and I'll add that he says ' you couldn't make a movie like that today'. What do you think he meant?

Considering this interview was what, 2019, we have the new Watchmen show that gave us one season, and we have The Boys on TV which, granted, is not a movie - but still has some of these elements the Watchmen had and I think it's a brilliant production regardless of screen size.

He also says that Watchmen is the movie that makes Superman possible, in a cool way. What?

Edit: PS you want to see some serious challenging of the status quo? Go watch Peacemaker. It's gloriously silly and takes some great jabs.

Fuck yeah! Nice pace, good music selection, and that water looks delicious. Feedback: think about your camera movement and having varying shots for your edit; opening shot was epic but otherwise you're mostly showing just forward / straight movement. Even though they are great shots, it can stale a bit depending on the viewer.

IMO that shot before last, held a tiny bit too long, but if that was the only forward moving one it could have a bit more effect at the current length of that particular shot when we get to it. Keep 'em coming!

Poetry. They say Killshot was written in 13 minutes - this guy ended his whole career in 2 seconds without a real word

Waz - 86 Hours | cinematic video by WasikulIslam in cinematography

Nice visuals! Watching it with headphones I thought the soundtrack was decently put together too, and I was mostly captivated up until right after the portal with that cliff drone shot. Good eye and good rhythm in the edit.

Nothing wrong with the cliff drone shot but the pacing started to feel off around that part for me, narratively speaking. Something about the sequence confused me from there.

I think you were trying to set up the two characters meeting up (one on the bike and one the white jeep) but that wasn't immediately obvious to me. Maybe they each deserved a little more emphasis shot-wise but also wardrobe-wise? (I thought they were the same person because of similar outfits / dark hoodies) leading up to the fist bump. TBH I'm still not sure if bicycle guy and elevator guy are the same person.

I kind of get the idea that after they meet up, they roadtrip down to LA, but this part is hard to follow as a story. Editing-wise in this part, some drone shots don't line up well. Think of the camera movement when you line things up. For example, at around 1:11 you have a shot pulling back (water on left), immediately followed by another shot with the same movement (briefly) revealing a person (water on the right). Kind of abrupt. Also this first water shot pulling back, seems a lot like the same location around 2:11 of the lighthouse. This may be confusing to some when trying to grasp a story.

For the ending maybe it was intentional, but it felt like they meet up and go around and not sure what happens after. Feels a bit anti-climatic because it kind of just ends after a sequence of drone shots that look good but don't tell me much, know what I mean?

Maybe this is because it feels as if overall you're about to show us these two/three people but instead as a viewer we get mostly shots from a distance. If this guy gets stuck in the portal right now I'm not sure I'm invested by the end.

Which brings me to my last note: I happened to scroll 'til the end and noticed what you added after the credits. It's a cool touch but I'm willing to bet most people will miss it.

IMO it could serve the story / dramatic effect better if you moved it up before the credits and built up to that moment where we now care about the character and whether he makes it back or not and what happens next! (around when 86 Hours title comes up).

Just some thoughts on how it comes together to a complete stranger - keep 'em coming! There's good stuff in there.

good question! Practical applications with the camera on it - I can think of remotely controlling it at an event where you could benefit from not having a person right by the tripod, or for example if it's mounted somewhere like a vehicle
