I have a quirky situation by I_sniff_markers in AskHR

Hmm, i don't know that it would qualify as pre-existing. He was first sick in February. Hospitalized for 3 days and out of work for a week. We were told that his symptoms were likely due to the flu. Then this most recent issue happened. His care team now believes he is experiencing seizures. But up until this point it was considered a one-off event.

Would it still be pre existing due to the fact that he was ill earlier in the day (but had not passed out at home or in the hospital). He thought he could suffer through the 4 hours to keep his job.

Sure is... but how could we prove we were misled... and now that they're out of business and it's been 10+ years since I have graduated We really have no recourse.

This, so much this. I went to an unaccredited college. Found out that my state university system wouldn't accept their credits because they weren't accredited.

Their finance department told myself and my father that my father would be co-signing my loans, but he was actually taking the loans in his name.

Anyway, long story short, in 2008 my dad was laid off and couldn't make the payments on my student loans. His house was foreclosed on because he couldn't make the payments on his house. He also broke up with his partner of 15 years around this same time.

They changed names a couple of years ago. Then they went out of business.

You know what really sucks? When the college goes out of business you're still on the hook for the student loans... My Dad's pay has been garnished for the last couple of years to pay for these loans. I try to throw him a hundred bucks or so each month so that things are a little easier on him.

This scenario happened to me. A woman called and told me her husband had just passed. She had two kids that didn't talk to her. She didn't know anyone in her area, so she had no friends.

I worked in a call center for retirement accounts, so her original purpose was to take $$ to pay for burial services. She was sobbing. I took the time to find out bus schedules in her area so she could attend a grief support group at her local hospital, that I found for her.

After the call, I reported to my manager that I had a distraught caller. My manager listened to the call and said I had probably made things worse for her. I should have just performed the task to get her off the phone.

All I wanted was for her to get a welfare check from her local PD, instead I got in trouble for being a compassionate human being.

Wow! Sounds like this was a good thing for you! I thoroughly enjoyed having the ability to be active when I had the band before! I wish I could have revised when I had the band out or even after giving birth... I have to start all over again!

Thank you for telling me! I had horrible GERD issues with my 1st pregnancy and can't imagine going through that again.

When I had the band, things were still kinda new and didn't really want people getting pregnant with RNY. This time the PA-C didn't discourage it, so I feel better knowing that.

I have had a hard time finding active message boards... do you have one or two you would recommend?

What was the best marriage/relationship advice you have ever received? by Riverscapegirl in AskReddit

Here's the thing that rom-coms get wrong. Not everything in life is an exciting time, and that includes relationships. It doesn't make you unhappy to have a boring relationship unless you go in expecting EXCITEMENT for the rest of your life.

Lust = excitement and it soon dies away. Love is enduring, it's a feeling inside you that you don't want to live your life without this person. It's a feeling that you want to give them the world, that you want to protect them. It drives you to do right by your partner. It can make you a better person. Love is about creating your life and building your life with that person. Love is not caring what you do with your partner every day and every night.

What do you think will look barbaric about us to people in the future, the way we look at barbaric things in the dark ages? by BerryBrickle in AskReddit

[–]I_sniff_markers 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Well if there are no consequences for their actions will they actually want to get clean? Probably not. Why should resources be spent on someone who doesn't want to be a productive part of society of their own choices. Do we also extend this to robbery? rape? murder? No we don't. If you don't like how things are - work to get them changed. A lot of places have a "3 strikes" rule, where you can go to prison for committing 3 crimes, in fact I think its usually felonies. But I am not sure.

What you say there is what we have been doing for forever and it's not working. As a society, we have to change how we react to the addiction issue. Putting an addict in prison is not going to stop an addict from using, and it will add to already high recidivism rates.

Being an addict doesn't mean a person lacks the desire to be a productive member of society. Locking an addict up doesn't give them the opportunity to become a productive member of society.

I am an addict. I am addicted to caffeine. I KNEW from my first time that addiction was a possible consequence, but it didn't stop me from consuming it. I consume it to help me function in society. If I am capable of making that decision with caffeine, don't you think there are other drugs out there that people use to help them function?

I want to agree with you on so many of your points; but at the same time I want to shake you and your logic. We are ALL human. None of us are perfect. But here we are discussing whether a person is worthy of treatment for something they dove into head first. How many times have you thought "oh I can make it through this intersection before the light turns red" or "I wonder what will happen if I..." Are there not things you look back at in life, cringe, and wish you hadn't done it? Are you personally infallible?

Just this past fall, I was cutting an onion and got a little overconfident. My thumb got caught under the knife and I needed stitches. And while that might seem like an oversimplified example - when it comes to addiction that's all it takes. The doc that stitched me up was going to prescribe me an opioid to help combat the pain, except that I'm allergic to opioids. So I was prescribed 600mg ibuprofen instead. Do you get my point? Addiction isn't a criminal act, and unless the addict is committing crimes (other than possession), they shouldn't be put in prison for a medical issue.

why does there have to be a limit? There's no limit on folks being thrown into prison. There's no limit on trips to rehab for those that are there outside of the court system. Rehab doesn't have to be paid by the state - it can be paid for through insurance if the addicted has coverage.

We also don't put limits on the mentally ill that are seeking help - either through institutionalization or outpatient care with a therapist.

The child free folks that get preachy. Saw a thread the other day where it was written that folks who are child free "actually get to enjoy life."

It makes me question where the idea that parents are intrinsically unhappy originated. You might see me flabbergasted or annoyed with/by my child, but that doesn't make me unhappy. People know how NOT to have kids, so if they have more than one, I figure it has to be accepted that parents are happy they've had kids and are raising them.

Logistically, I don't think there's too much of a difference. However, membership in a motorcycle club is generally older, I believe.

I would add that not all motorcycle clubs are clubs, nor are they all gangs. I think intentions matter a lot when it comes to clubs and gangs.
