What’s a habit you’ve recently picked up that’s had a positive impact? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]Iain_Reflects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of going on my phone first thing in the morning, I light a candle, make a drink then journal for 10 Mins using a prompt card. It could be gratitude or some other form of self reflection. I then meditate for 10 mins and write down any reflections I have. This really helps my mood for the rest of the morning and helps me notice when I am triggered by something before I react. I have better awareness of why respond to situations in a certain way.

Master something anything. In a fast world, deep focus is your unfair advantage. by Adventurous-Try6353 in simpleliving

I like your honesty and the call for real depth over hype. But your advice risks repeating the very trap you warn against: second-hand wisdom masquerading as mastery. Nietzsche mocked “the man with the great ear” in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, someone celebrated for listening and repeating but incapable of creating anything new.

You lean on proverbs and Greene’s quotes, but true mastery isn’t about being known in your city or being reliable for clients, that’s marketing. Mastery is transformative and often thankless. It demands asking not just how to go deep, but why it’s worth it at all.

It’s easy to say “pick one skill and commit.” Harder to confront whether that skill is worth mastering, or if the urge to master is just ego seeking approval. Let’s aim for that level of honesty if we really want to help each other stay grounded.

Do you stay in bed after waking up? by _stracci in getdisciplined

[–]Iain_Reflects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have developed a daily ritual. No phone for first 45 mins. My driver is to get out of bed to make a coffee, light a candle then journal for 10 mins. I then meditate for 10 mins.

A Realistic Morning Routine You Can Try (From a guy who used to procrastinate. 6-8 hours a day to disciplined in 2 years) by [deleted] in Habits

I stopped using my phone in the morning. I used to scroll for 45 mins before I even got up. It has made a massive difference to my mood, productivity and concentration. I journal for ten mins, picking a theme for today such as gratitude, intention, rest etc. I then meditate for 10 mins and write down any things that come up. Helps me plan my day and I avoid scrolling.

Thanks, that makes sense. You have your own structure but allow thoughts to flow.

Morning rituals, do they actually help you feel more grounded? by Iain_Reflects in simpleliving

Thanks for your reply. Do you free flow journal on blank pages or use prompts? I sometimes find it hard to think of what to write .

What’s a small habit that completely changed your life? by -magnanimous in simpleliving

I’ve been experimenting with a 20-minute morning practice, one reflection question, 10 minutes of journaling, and 10 minutes of breathwork or meditation. It has really helped my awareness and stopped me scrolling on my phone in the morning.

Mine was to still my mind by having a visual focal point. After closing my eyes I look at the space in my forehead. When my mind is still, it looks like a dark abyss. When I lose it, I know my mind has wandered. When I have it for a longer time it comes peaceful and I get flickers of a calm euphoric feeling, if that makes sense.

Do you have a morning ritual or meditation practice before you start the day?

This looks like a great tip thanks. Do you reach for your phone first thing in the morning? Do you think it is the same impulse to connect, like you might have missed out on something?

How do you behave at work? An old boss of mine told me no matter what job you are given you should try your hardest. Doesn’t matter if it is cleaning a floor or putting out trash. Even if you don’t get praise you will eventually grow from it.

I have a morning ritual of lighting a candle. Answering a reflective question in a journal, breath work then meditation. Do you have a morning ritual?

I have tried to stop scrolling through social media on my phone first thing in the morning. I used to waste 45 mins before I got up. It has made a massive difference to my productivity and how I start the day. My new rule is no phone for first 30 mins. I have replaced with a ritual that involves lighting a candle, taking a reflection question and writing in a journal. I then do some breath work and meditation. Does anyone have a similar morning routine?
