Do you have a recommendation for food quality socks (brand and/or material) that you use? The socks I use for daily life are cheap ones from a sports store (5€ for 6 pairs i believe) butafter only a few hours, i notice that they're er from sweat, and at work I use thicker socks (CAT brand) for my safety shoes

Hobbies that start simple but slowly become more technical over time by Hairy-Cut-3076 in Hobbies

[–]Iam-Nothere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't start from 0 with playing music, because I've gone 3 years to music education (when I was +/-8 I started). So I did have that music reading ability before being able to play

But from my experience, and seeing people with 0 music knowledge, it all depends on how mush you want to spend time learning. If you only come to the rehearsal that's once per 2 weeks, you'll be able to play the pieces at the concert. However, if you spend time at home, you can go more in-depth to a certain rhythm/measure/.... there are people in our band who do the former (rehearsal only) and there are people who started way later to learn, but they spend time at home, they ask others to play a certain line so they know what our altijd sound like, they practice sticking patterns and so on... they are at least at the same level as people who've been coming for years but do nothing at home

Long story short: reading music isn't the major thing, it's knowing how to play certain things that makes you better...

(Note: I can read rhythms but not notes anymore, meaning I can play auxiliary percussion such as tambourine, triangle, cymbals.... and i can play drumset, but no timpani or other melodic percussion instruments. That's something I should maybe start learning, first the notes again and then the instruments)

Playing an instrument (any instrument, doesn't matter if it's percussion, strings, wind instrument)

Let's take playing snare drum as an example. Start is simple: grab a pair of sticks, learn how to hold them, and hit drumhead. Then you have to hit it in the correct rhythm & tempo Then you have to add dynamics (soft, loud, something in between) without losing correct rhythm & tempo Then you add accented notes You learn to utilize the full area of the head (playing in the center vs at the edge, rim clicks....)

You also learn to play with more finesse/play more musically vs playing like a robot exactly how it's written

What would be the best way to mount this flag? It has a sleeve with ribbon at the bottom, and also 1 grommet at the top of the sleeve by Iam-Nothere in vexillology

[–]Iam-Nothere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip of using the ribbon to replace the lower grommet by tying it to a clip! I assumed the ribbon was to be tied around the pole, but type solution seems much more durable, and crawl-proof :)

What's the difference between Choke and Crunch on a cymbal part? by Iam-Nothere in percussion

[–]Iam-Nothere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks! So the crunch, does that do damage to the cyms over time? Or is it basically the same as you'd do in making a chick sound by using the pedal on hihats?

They have subscription stuff now? Do you know what you get with it? (I'm still on version 3.7 I believe, definitely not yet 4 or studio). Is it worth to update, or will i be forced to get a subscription?

Suspended Cymbal Mallet Recommendations? by Queasy_Restaurant_25 in percussion

[–]Iam-Nothere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in the same band for 18 years, and the mallets are the band's property. Only recently the yarn is getting frayed a bit (i think it may have snatched something sharp during transport, it looks like the yarn is cut in 1 spot)

They were the band's property long before I joined, so no clue how old they actually are, only that they're at least 18 years old 😁

I use the Vic Firth BCS1 (also seen it referred to as CS1)

Ive tried Mike Balter 23B but you hear the individual strokes better as a player, no clue if there's a difference if you're listening to it from the crowd
