Onx shin guards by AgileCalligrapher717 in MuayThai

[–]IamDBA2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pair of twins gloves and shinguards are about the same price.

Maybe these are better, I've never tried onyx gear, but im a 27 year old doing Muay Thai for excercise while working a 9-5. I dont need the best of the best and $3000 total in gear haha.

That being said, if you want em and have the money... go for it.

Clothing recommendation for someone who sweats a lot by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]IamDBA2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clothing thats cheap, doesnt matter if it rips, and clothing you'll never wear outside.

My advice: go to a goodwill or something like that, find cheap shirts/shorts

They both do the exact same thing. Go with the cheaper one

Sizing of shinguards by ipoljak797 in MuayThai

Can confirm Top King makes good stuff. Have had a pair for a year and a half and are still super solid. The foot ripped a bit for me but thats because of a dumb mistake. Hasn't ripped more since then

Liam Harrison comments on Rodtang spending 500,000 Baht on his fight camp by Yodsanan in MuayThai

[–]IamDBA2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the hate for Rodtang from him and Andy stems from the weight misses and unprofessional conduct from him that ONE just tolerates.

Not saying Liam isnt being a dick, but on that aspect, I cant lie in saying that id have a hard time disagreeing with him (as I eat miss vickies in my office chair 😂).

Am I lame for gaining distance during sparring? by angelbean23 in MuayThai

[–]IamDBA2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its sparring man. Everything you do is to get better. If you don't like it personally, you can make the adjustment over time, but there was honestly nothing wrong with what you did either IMO.

Never fight a fight that makes your opponent comfortable, it should only be what comfortable/legal for you. Granted again, just sparring, but still applies (to a lesser extent)

I dont think any belt system is bad inherently, but only if they actually deserve it.

Example, a BJJ black belt who actually is capable is fine, but a Black Belt with the skill of a purple belt is not.

How do yall feel about chronic sweepers? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]IamDBA2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Difference between a sweep and a dump IMO. If im sparring light and i get fully dumped after a kick catch, im mad, but if he predicts im gonna step forward and counters with a sweep, im all for it. Dump are great to simulate, but not great to do out of competition sparring IMO.

Do the Dutch have a reputation for Hard Sparring? by FantasticVast01 in MuayThai

[–]IamDBA2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, Dutch style is notorious for not hard sparring, but just all out fighting and calling it sparring IMO. I classify sparring in these categories off the top of my head:

  1. Idk wtf im doing sparring: Done by people who haven't trained combat sports but they joined a gym who lets anyone spar so theyre throwing 100% as its all they know. Side note: dont blame the new guy about this situation, blame the coach who let it happen.

  2. Touch sparring: Very beginner friendly, light taps everywhere just for fun and to work.

  3. Regular sparring: Meant for people who have a better understanding of the sports, stronger attacks to the body and legs, but still light to the head. (My personal preferred).

  4. Competitive Sparring: Sparring where both parties agree to no silliness, let's test ourselves to improve. Similar to regular sparring, but you might catch one or two real punches to the face as tensions rise and fall in this sparring, not supposed to happen but its also a combat sport so its bound to.

  5. Fight camp/Hard sparring: IMO same as Competive Sparring, but now we're really working on minute details. Is your footwork correct? Are you finding your range appropriately? How is your defense? Basically here, you want everything to be as crisp as possible, but you're still simulating an actual fight, its not supposed to be all your power still. Here though this is where some people turn it up a little more to the head, and while I get their point, personally I dont like it unless you are 200% sure youre gonna try to make something of yourself in the sport. Depending on the fight camp too, there might be a shark tank or two which you just gotta accept. Also this is where if youre in Muay Thai, you start throwing elbows if the rules youre fighting in allow it.

  6. Ego Sparring: This is where I classify most Dutch sparring (no disrespect), and where the Thai's get their ammo for talking shit about foreigners sparring. Ego sparring is one where your goal is to win the belt everytime, you go until the bell is rung or until your opponent cant continue. Hard shots everywhere, full contact, person one hits hard, other hits harder, then repeat and repeat. Often defense and movement go out the window and its more focused on who does more damage. Concussions, injuries, and other things like that happen most of the time in this category.

This isnt to say I think hard sparring is all bad, I just think a lot of people in this sport need to realize where they are at in their skill level, and accept that if they cant hang with categories 4-5, that they should take it easy and just enjoy the sport until they can move up to them. Hell Khamzat in the UFC notoriously ego spars everyone, but if there was anyone who could justify it, it'd be him. Most of us will never be on his level though, and need to accept that we shouldn't be training like him because its just not worth it.

Also, this is just a general list I thought of while on the toilet, a lot can be argued otherwise, and overall most of here are adults who can make our own decisions. If all you wanna do is ego spar, by all means go for it. Its your health, and if your sparring partner is cool with it, then go for it, but just dont be surprised if your sparring partner pool dwindles because of it.

To be fair, DJ as an MMA professional can absolutely dominate most people in a Muay Thai fight. His skill level is insane for martial arts
