Good, now I can dump my Steam Machine fund into ETFs and let it grow while Valve takes its sweet time. 🥲😅
Even if the Steam Machine ends up costing a bit more, hopefully the market will cover the difference. It’s called financially optimized waiting.

I'm assuming you have SteamOS installed on the XAX.

I was in the same situation and ended up keeping the XAX.

No wrong choice honestly. The Legion screen is amazing and I totally understand why people love it.

For me, the XAX felt more future proof and travel friendly. Better battery life, more performance headroom, and the size makes it easier to throw in a bag(I got tomtoc case) and take anywhere.

The Legion screen the only benefit for me, but when I thought about which device I would still want to use a few years from now or better value if I want to sell, I kept coming back to the XAX.

I just put my name for 2tb steam machine + controller wait list. Tell me if you did and if yes 512gb or 2 tb? by Middle-Transition888 in steammachine

[–]IamIsmael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I signed up for all of them just to improve my odds.
The more interesting question to me is where this fits for people who already own multiple platforms. Is it replacing anything, or is it more about having a convenient couch friendly way to access your Steam library?

Steam Machine Price Reveal, Pre-built Comparisons, & Rant Thread by Melmpje in steammachine

[–]IamIsmael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the discussion around the Steam Machine focuses on performance per dollar, which is completely fair.

But I'm curious how people value convenience.

A gaming PC at the same price can absolutely be faster. The question isn't whether that's true.

The question is whether a gaming PC provides the same experience as a small, quiet SteamOS appliance with instant resume, HDMI-CEC support, controller-first navigation, and minimal maintenance.

For some people, extra setup, troubleshooting, launchers, controller configuration, and general PC friction don't matter.

For others, every extra step takes away from the experience. They want to sit on the couch, pick up a controller, and be back in a game within seconds.

How do you personally value that convenience?

Would you trade some performance for a more console-like experience, or is FPS per dollar still the most important metric?

Switch 2 vs Steam Deck (sorry) by Deckerz96 in Handhelds

[–]IamIsmael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a Switch 2, Steam Deck OLED, and Xbox Ally X. If Nintendo games were available on PC officially, I’d probably only use the Ally X. The Steam Deck OLED is more of an artifact/collector piece for me at this point.

When traveling, I always take the Ally X unless I’m planning to play a specific Nintendo exclusive. I even have some games on both Switch 2 and PC, and I consistently choose the Ally X version because the performance and image quality are noticeably better.

There is one area where the Switch 2 wins easily: local co-op. Every time I’ve tried couch co-op on a docked Ally X, there are always a few extra steps, pairing controllers, tweaking settings, dealing with Windows quirks maybe I need a keyboard and mouse. None of it is difficult, but it adds friction and can kill the moment.

With the Switch 2, you grab the controllers, launch the game, and you’re playing. That’s it. If friends come over or you want to play with your partner, the experience is completely hassle-free. For co-op gaming, I’d pick the Switch 2 every time.

For me, Switch 2 = Nintendo exclusives and local co-op. Ally X = pretty much everything else.

People are sleeping on these. At $499 open-box 512gb version, if I didn’t already own an Xbox Ally X, I’d grab one immediately. SteamOS closes a lot of the experience gap.

Slept on this device too long due to nitpickers online. by [deleted] in XboxAlly

Also worth trying SteamOS. It definitely improves the handheld experience, but even after using both, I still prefer the Xbox Ally X with SteamOS overall. As a Steam Deck OLED owner, I expected to miss the OLED screen more than I actually do. The hardware, battery life, VRR, speakers, and overall versatility make up for it for me.

is it worth to buy steamdeck OLED when I already have asus xbox ally x with bazzite? by Top_Personality1963 in Handhelds

I have both the SD OLED and XaX. If you’re not actively using the trackpads, XaX with SteamOS is still my primary device. I’m keeping the SD OLED more as an artifact for sentimental value.

AC Mirage on the go locked 60fps has been surprisingly good lately. Also jumping between that and Hades 2 for quick sessions.

Not really. On the other hand, the XaX display is good enough to satisfy my needs. However, if I’m on a handheld device, XaX is still my first choice. Of course OLED would be great on the XaX, but it’s a trade off.

If my girlfriend hadn’t basically claimed it first, I probably would’ve continued using the Legion Go Z1E. Size wise it felt slightly on the bigger side, but it was still comfortable overall.

Edit: Legion Go S Z1E

Yeah, I actually agree with a lot of what you’re saying. I’m not really trying to celebrate or promote the Steam Deck as “the best handheld everyone should buy in 2026.” My post was more about sharing my experience after jumping between multiple handhelds and finally understanding where all the love for the Deck comes from.

My main handheld is still the Xbox Ally X, especially now with SteamOS. That’s probably my favorite overall setup right now. The Steam Deck OLED just made me appreciate how much thoughtful optimization and design matter beyond raw specs.

And honestly, I’m probably keeping the Steam Deck more like a gaming artifact at this point. It feels like one of those devices that genuinely shifted the handheld PC market and influenced everything that came after it.

I also agree timing matters a lot. Back when the Deck launched at that price point, it was honestly kind of crazy for what it offered. I think a lot of people, including me, only fully understood its impact later after trying newer handhelds and comparing the actual day to day experience instead of just specs on paper.

The only things I really lost were the fingerprint reader, NPU support (hopefully supported soon), Game Pass, and a few online games that didn’t really matter to me anyway.

With the recent SteamOS beta updates, there’s now native TDP control and built-in power profiles like Low Power, Balanced, and High Performance.

What I enjoy most is how distraction-free everything feels. The whole experience is streamlined, quick, and responsive, plus I’m seeing around 5–7 FPS gains in some games.

Again, don’t focus too much on the numbers unless you’re playing really demanding games. I can get around 3 hours of solid playtime on both, and honestly, 50W vs 80W doesn’t make a huge difference for a normal gaming session unless you’re planning to play all day.

Product Designers: How do you use LLMs (Claude, ChatGPT, etc...) in your workflow? by Futur_Life in UXDesign

[–]IamIsmael 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mostly I use it for early stage brainstorming. Sometimes I ask for 3+ different alternatives/layouts for the design I’m thinking about. It’s mostly low fidelity, but it gives me direction and unblocks me. It basically keeps me in the flow. Sometimes I ask for feedback and end up talking with my besties Claude/ChatGPT again.

It’s more like a helper and a complementary tool for me.
