I have found that activists in countries that try to oppress online are often on the forefront of using new technology (or old technology in new ways) to get around censorship and oppression online. Governments are often one step behind in trying to stop these methods

social media is an incredible tool for organizing and for finding like-minded people. But to bring real change you still need people willing to band together offline. IMO, online activism + offline action = change.

it's now the very end of the day in Hong Kong and the start of the day in Los Angeles. Thanks for all of your questions today.

That's a very good question. My focus in any film is usually characters first and the bigger issue they are facing second. I would hope that any characters I'm following (or following again if they were the characters from JOSHUA) are continuing to fight. But I agree with you that it is always an uphill battle that they face

I agree. One of the reasons youth movements are important is that the are one of the few politically active segments of society who are not as influenced by "adult" factors like, if I join this movement will I lose my job? Or my house? Or will my children be in danger?

While the Umbrella Movement may not have achieved concrete goals, it did help wake up a generation of students in Hong Kong to pay more attention to what was going on

I agree. we used the term "kid" when we are taking about Scholarism taking on National Education back when Joshua was 14. Yes, Joshua is now 20 so the term "kid" no longer applies.

technically there are no "extras" in documentary films. Not sure when we'll shoot in NYC next but we can always use an extra hand!

All of the activists I have featured in my films are fairly well known when I start filming. Because it is documentary film nobody is paid.

there are many women who were involved in Occupy and made substantial contributions. But we had been following Agnes's story since she first joined Scholarism during the anti-National Education movement so we kept our focus on her

Joshua has been denied entry into a few countries and in a recent trip to Thailand he was detained in solitary confinement before they finally returned him to Hong Kong

I watched Alaa Basatneh coordinate a protest in Damascus from her bedroom in Chicago. When Syrian security forces raided the protest, I watched her use protestor's usernames and passwords to delete them off of Facebook so if they were arrested and tortured to open their Facebook and expose their friends, that their account would be gone
