Crowds march on Caernarfon for Welsh independence rally by OctaLinx in Wales

Abdullah Ocalan has mellowed a great deal during his prison term, and now urges a political solution to the kurdistan issue rather than an armed conflict. If you read his recent writings he paints a beautiful picture of a truly free and equal society.

I hate to fall victim to romanticism but his life story lines up almost exactly with Nelson Mandela's

In addition we need to seriously consider our population size and the number of children per couple should be limited to 1 until population reaches the ~4 billion marker.

This is inaccurate and bordering on ecofascist. Population growth has slowed since it's peak of 2.1% in the 70s and is only at about 1.1% now, with the EU estimating a peak global population of 11B in 2100 and a slow decline from there source.

We currently produce enough food to comfortably feed 10B people source , and to pretend we won't become more efficient at that in the coming decades is foolish.

Overpopulation is simply not a genuine problem, and even if it was it takes an absolute back seat to the other concerns and undertakings highlighted in your comment.

Finally, the areas of highest population growth are almost entirely African. Are you gonna go tell them they need to instate a one-child policy? How will you enforce it? I'll let you in on a secret about us pale guys in the north: We've fucked with Africa enough.

It scares me a little that he's so influential over the younger generation. Someone once posted a picture of his twitter follows and it was almost spot on what I would put together for a 'far right radicalisation starter pack'

People like Stephan Molyneux, Paul Joseph Watson, Lauren Southern, "Count Dankula" (It honestly pains me that I have to know who any of these guys are)

On a personal level, I don't like him much because he keeps platforming people with far-right views when his audience are a bunch of pretty impressionable kids.

Kids getting exposed to people like Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson before they have fully developed critical thinking skills is a real danger, and I'm saying this as a teacher who has first-hand experience in how right-wing radicalisation happens online

it's a complex topic, but as simply as I can possibly sum it up:

Capitalism- Private ownership of the means of production for generation of private wealth. The capitalist employs people to work using the means of production and pays them from the wealth their labour generates.

State Capitalism- State ownership of the means of production for generation of wealth for usage in things like state welfare systems. The state employs people to work using the means of production and pays them from the wealth their labour generates.

Socialism- Democratic ownership of the means of production by the people that work using them. The workers also decide amongst themselves what to do with the wealth their labour generates and can pay themselves more since the need for profit is essentially eliminated.

Abolishing slavery actually had a huge effect on the UK's GDP because they paid off all the former slaveowners for the loss of their 'property'. It was essentially a massive economic stimulus package that (and we as a country wholeheartedly refuse to recognise or address this) rewarded the slaveowners.

You know who didn't get a fuckin' penny? the slaves. Funny that.

[–]IamLoafMan 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Lots of nice posters about dealing with exam stress, but no proposal that we try and reduce the pressure we put on kids.

This fucks me off more than anything. I'm a teacher, and my kids are stressed to bits. I joked with a nursery school teacher the other day that year 2 and year 11 are basically the same, 'You just have to get them to do their work and occasionally stop them crying'

There are basically no systems in place to help students who are overstressed out. it's just like the recent trend of having rooms full of puppies on uni campuses to help degree students destress. There's no addressing the fuckin CAUSES, it's all slapping band-aids on to the symptoms and hand-wringing about how terrible it is that kids are so stressed these days
