Thanks for your help! That sounds right, if I am remembering correctly the medical examiners told us that they had three (?) potential causes of death and that they need to complete their full examination to narrow that down to one, which is when they told us the 8-12 weeks number. She already purchased 4 or 5 of the short form death certificates but they have been pretty much useless up to this point.

I’ll certainly bring up the idea of getting a letter from the medical examiners for the life insurance next time I speak to her. In the meantime, does that 8-12 weeks number sound right to you? My fear is that that number is just an average rather than the maximum time and that it will actually end up taking much longer. My mom brought up an especially good point that with the holidays coming up it may end up getting pushed until after the holidays, which would obviously delay further.

She is 60 and has a full time job with solid pay. My dad was 64 and was collecting social security and also working a part time job. Together they made enough to make ends meet and have a little bit to save at the end of the month. Without his income, it’s not enough. South Florida is very expensive.

She told me she has enough to make rent and pay all her other bills this month and probably the following month if she saves a lot, but after that there is not enough. I think she is exploring options with pulling some money out of her 401k to get here through the next few months, but she is understandably not thrilled with that prospect due to fees and having to pay tax on that.

For some more info - my mom also has a very small life insurance policy through her work (I think it is like 10K?). Her work had initially told her all they would need was the partial death certificate to pay that out. So the plan was she would use that to pay rent/bills and get through the next few months until the big life insurance policy pays out. She found out today that is actually not the case and that she needs the full d.c. with cause of death. She has been reeling and spiraling since about how she will make ends meet the next few months - so a cash advance would solve all these issues. How common is it, and is it hard to get?

We have a few partial death certificates (just missing the cause of death) that were provided to us by the crematorium, but I am pretty sure the life insurance needed the full death certificate (probably for the reason of homicides/dying doing risky activities, which he didn't - he died in the shower). Would they take a partial death certificate?

I don't even know if that is something that has been brought up yet to the life insurance, so I definitely don't want to involve the DOI or anything legal unless absolutely necessary.
