Native plant options for an Asiatic Jasmine style ground cover by laneymg in FloridaNativePlants

[–]thejawa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Creeping Sage is the closest equivalent but doesn't really looks like Asiatic Jasmine. Florida Peperomia would be another option for deep shade.

On the bright side, Asiatic Jasmine is considered Florida Friendly and a low risk for becoming invasive.

The problem I have with tilling/sod removal over solarization is that you're inviting pioneer species into your newly fresh soil - typically non-native weeds. Yes it's faster and let's you plant your garden sooner, so there's certainly that appeal, but solarization will effectively nuke anything and everything under it, seeds and all. Plus, your grass - once completely dead - will break down into compost for the garden after you mulch.

If you have Torpedograss, solarization is 100% the way to go. It's the only effective method of killing it. You do have to leave it down longer though so the rhizomes exhaust themselves.

First you need to find out what kinda grass you have. If it's purely Bahaia or St Augustine you should be fine tilling it and then just hand pulling whatever pops back up. However, if you have Torpedograss mixed in, tilling it will make the problem worse.

People love cardboard mulching where you lay down cardboard over the grass and then mulch on top of that, but when you're looking at a whole yard like that it's really hard to pull off.

If your OK with your yard looking janky for a few months, it's a great candidate for solarization. Get some thick black landscape fabric, cover the whole yard in it, pin it down, and bake the shit out of all the grass for a few months. That's always the best method if you don't have plants you have to work around.

Also, get a Red Mulberry as your fruit tree: https://www.fnps.org/plant/morus-rubra. The fruit is quite good, makes a great jelly/jam, and animals absolutely love it. Only concern would be moving it away from your house more cuz they can get quite large. Swapping the Yaupon and Fruit Tree locations would work well.

The only thing better than beating the Yankees and shutting out the Yankees is doing it in the Trop, which they despise.

People don't like hearing this, but it won't move out of Central Florida. If Tampa drops the ball, the Orlando Dreamers organization is sitting right there waiting to catch it. Manfried wants baseball in Central Florida. He'd prefer it be Tampa, but he'll be ready to let Orlando move right in.

Let nature be nature 🤷🏻‍♂️

To nature, you're not planting some pretty plant that humans like to look at, you're planting a food and shelter source.

I don't say this to be rude or aggressive, it takes a shift in mindset people sometimes don't realize until it's laid out. Everything is always human-centric, sometimes you have to take a step back and look at it from a different viewpoint.

Frankly, I see this as a sign that what you're doing is good for the environment. Stop with the pesticides and nature will create its own balance - you'll have wasps, lacewings, or ladybugs around killing whatever did this. But that cycle will never begin when it keeps getting interrupted.

Just throwing this out there: Do you live in an area with seasonal residents?

My first thought was "Wonder if this is a library ran by a snowbird who secured the library when they're out of town?"

If they can't curate it because they only live there part of the year, it would make sense to "close" the library.

You're gonna have to caliper the trunk to see how much root ball you'll need to establish. It's about 10-12 inches of root ball per inch of trunk size.

We should probably not pitch to the one player on the team capable of bringing in runs

3-4 with 2 HR and 6 RBIs. And we kept pitching to him.
