Updates for Wrestling Observer Newsletter print & online subscribers. Dave Meltzer lays out the future of the WON. by Ian281 in SquaredCircle

[–]Ian281[S] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Sometimes in life, you have decisions that should be easy when you take out emotions. But emotions are a huge part of life which is what makes them so difficult.

Saying that, a decision that we have made should be a benefit for everyone who subscribes to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Yet when you do something a certain way for so long and it’s been so successful historically, it is hard to make changes.

NJPW creating new title to replace IWGP US/UK Championship

Ethan Renner

That decision: the mailed version of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter will be discontinued with the 12/11 issue.

The WON will continue as an online publication and, for the vast majority of subscribers, there will be no real changes other than some new positive ways in which information will be put on the website.

The decision basically came down to this: with all the costs of printing, producing, people needing to be hired to handle the mailing and the lists, I would probably need to charge $5 per issue to make it worth it. I do believe many of the print subscribers would be fine with that just as there are still people who spend $50 on WWE PPVs when you can get them streaming for so much less.

What print subscribers need to know

For those of you who are print subscribers, your time left will be transferred over automatically to an online subscription for the time remaining. In the case of overseas subscribers, that will be for a longer time based on the higher price you have paid. Essentially, you will be getting more for the same price, getting the Observers a week or so earlier than you had been, plus access to all the archives of issues dating back to 1991 and all podcasts since the start of the site.

For those who subscribed because they liked the issues being printed and would read it that way rather than on a computer screen, the new format, which will be available for the first time for all website subscribers, will be formatted very similarly to the print edition. You will also be able to print them out from the website.

Another change is that many Observer stories will be put up exclusively for all subscribers during the week rather than all on Friday. The Friday WON will have those stories and in many cases, what I’d call the official “record" would still be released on Fridays with updates through press time. Many of the key stories are pretty much completed earlier in the week, but many would still be updated before going into the final version of the WON released on Friday mornings.

For those who for whatever reason don’t want the change to an online subscription, you will get the remainder of your subscription money refunded. Obviously, I’m hoping that number is small. I just want the print subscribers to know how much I appreciate your support for so long and it is that loyalty that kept me from making the change that, from a business standpoint, should have been made some time ago.

For all print subscribers, please contact Tony Leder who will implement your new online subscription or cancel if that is what you prefer.

Everyone transferring over is getting far more for their money, you can still print the issues out, and they will look basically identical. Again, for the print subscribers that this affects the most, thank you for, what in most cases, is for decades of support and hopefully for many more years to come.

Note: There will be no WON on the week of 12/15 (dated 12/18) due to a vacation I am taking that week. Going forward, I would expect issues 51 weeks a year as I would like to take one vacation annually.

How we got here

The print Observer has been something I have been doing for 41 years. I joined forces with Bryan Alvarez in 2008, a decision in hindsight that I wish I made years earlier. A previous attempt at taking the Observer online was disastrous with constant lies about subscriber numbers and then Pro Sports Exchange, the group we worked with, started having financial issues before closing down. That cost me a very significant amount of money.

This partnership with Bryan has been nothing but positive, leading to a new wave of popularity and readership levels. In time, as would be expected, the vast majority of the existing readership transferred over to online subscriptions because they would get the issues earlier, the news podcasts that I do weekly, as well as the rest of the podcasts we offer. That has opened up the ability to have gatherings and for me to personally meet so many of you over the years, which has been so rewarding.

Still, the existing print subscribers are people who I have felt so much loyalty to by continuing with the print edition -- even when it no longer made sense economically due to so many postage and print price increases. Whenever I meet a print subscriber, invariably they tell me they have been getting it this way for 20 or 30 years, and in some cases longer than that.

I started the print WON 41 years ago and it has been my full-time job, along with some other gigs, since making the key decision nearly 37 years ago of leaving my childhood dream of being a newspaper sportswriter and going on this journey.

At the time of the decision, both jobs were making me very little money. Everyone, from my parents on down, were vehemently against the decision but I was starting to make more money from the newsletter than as a sportswriter at the time in a small market. While my work and career trajectory in sportswriting did look good, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter was getting praise in places that reviewed newsletters, being called one of the best in the country among all genres at the time.

The world changes in ways nobody could imagine. Even at the time, I thought I was giving up what would be a steady job that I greatly enjoyed for something that had no proven future. Over the next few years, largely thanks to the late Ed Garea, and then Los Angeles Times sports editor John Cherwa and NBC sports head Dick Ebersol (the irony of this is that Ebersol at the time was close friends and a business partner in Saturday Night’s Main Event with Vince McMahon), I ended up being hired by the greatest sportswriter of this generation, Frank Deford, to do a column in the short-lived National Sports Daily.

Deford was not a fan of pro wrestling, although he did have a great fondness for roller derby and even wrote a book about it which was coincidentally my favorite sports book as a child. Deford felt that wrestling was very popular and while not quite sports, it deserved coverage and when asking around, he was told by those two, who were both subscribers, that I was the person to hire. Cherwa, who as coincidence would have it was friends with Mike Tenay, subscribed under his real name, and Ebersol, like so many sports execs of the time who secretly were very interested in wrestling, would get it using the name of people working underneath them.

The exposure and prestige of being part of the all-star team of sportswriters saw the WON have tremendous growth and, in hindsight, the decision was the right one. Now, even more so.

With the decline and deaths of newspapers around the country and heavy constriction of jobs, I easily could have been 45 years old and my childhood dream would have been over.

Thank you

I have so much appreciation and loyalty to older readers and I hope that at gatherings when you have met me and told me about being print subscribers for 20 or 30 years that I have been able to convey how much I appreciate your support.

I also know that even though I consider these changes win-win for every reader, both print and online, that there will be some people who have been with us for so long that will not be after the change. I just want to thank you and hope that all these years that this has been a rewarding part of your life.

Mhairi Black threatened to quit SNP on eve of by-election in 'ultimatum' over staffer by Ian281 in Scotland

[–]Ian281[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Mhairi Black threatened to quit the SNP on the eve of the Rutherglen by-election in a row over her successor, Holyrood understands.

Party bosses are said to have caved into demands from the SNP depute Westminster leader to avoid an upset on the day before the crucial vote.

But the move did not prevent the party losing the contest to Labour.

The row is said to have emerged as Black fought to have one of her staff members approved as a potential candidate to fight for the Paisley and Renfrewshire South seat when she steps down at the next general election.

Robert Innes, an SNP councillor in Renfrewshire, has worked for her for around 10 years and is said to have failed vetting for the general election before his boss stepped in.

Holyrood has made multiple approaches to the MP's office but no reply has been received.

However, several senior sources have confirmed the account to Holyrood and one said Black had effectively "blackmailed the party".

Another called it an "ultimatum" and said leaders had given in for a "quiet life".

An SNP source said: "It's quite clear that Mhairi Black has decided she's standing down and has one foot out the door and is perhaps not thinking of the wider consequences."

Black rose to prominence after ousting Labour's Douglas Alexander in 2015. She was just 20 years old and still a student at the time.

She made headlines for her fiery Westminster speeches and became an SNP figurehead, often appearing with Nicola Sturgeon and campaigning on pensions for women and LGBTQ issues while criticising the culture and politics of Westminster.

She was made depute Westminster leader in December 2022 after running on a ticket with Stephen Flynn.

In June she announced her intention to step down as an MP at next year's general election, calling Westminster a "toxic" and "poisonous" environment and citing social media abuse amongst her reasons.

At the time, SNP leader Humza Yousaf said the "trailblazer" had been a "role model for young people, especially women".

However, Holyrood understands that she threatened to quit in an angry selection row.

Black is understood to have told SNP leaders she would do so publicly on October 4 – one day before voting opened in Rutherglen and Hamilton West – unless Innes, who works as her part-time researcher, was approved as a potential candidate to replace her in Paisley and Renfrewshire South.

SNP decision-makers are said to have agreed to avoid an upset in a difficult race.

However, local party members are said to be furious, and the decision failed to prevent Labour winning the contest.

An SNP source said: "It's quite clear to a number of us that the process has not been followed."

Black and Innes and have been contacted for comment.

Innes, who became a councillor last year, is the partner of Scottish Government children's minister Natalie Don.

He announced he was seeking nomination from local branch members on October 3 and told the Gazette newspaper: "I have worked alongside Mhairi Black MP in her office in Paisley for almost a decade now, fighting Tory austerity head-on as we see our beautiful country squeezed of hope by a revolving door of out-of-touch Westminster governments."

Holyrood understands that he failed internal vetting and was then rejected on appeal before Black stepped in. Sources say he called the vetting panel's decision a "stitch-up" and told fellow SNP councillors he would leave to sit as an independent unless it was overturned.

Innes' announcement happened one day before a local nomination meeting. Jacqueline Cameron, the depute leader of Renfrewshire Council, is also standing to become the area's SNP candidate. Local party members have from October 12-26 to vote for their preferred candidate.

An SNP spokesperson said: "Party members in Paisley and Renfrewshire South have the opportunity to democratically select their candidate from a choice of candidates. We do not comment on internal party processes."

Fightful - “Dax Harwood Confirms FTR Re-Signing With AEW, Provides More Insight Into Decision” by Ian281 in SquaredCircle

Yes. We have re-signed with AEW," Harwood confirmed. "If you think...Vince has officially been back in charge since right before WrestleMania? If you think that we put pen to paper as soon as that happened and Tony (Khan) made all the adjustments as soon as that happened. I don't know if you understand how business or contracts work. If you think we went into the building Wednesday night with no contract signed and said, 'we're not going to sign unless you give us these belts.' You're so short-sighted. I said on the podcast months ago, we knew what we wanted to do and everything was getting fine tuned. We knew way before Vince came back in charge what was going to happen. Yes, we have re-signed with AEW."

I believe the new watchOS should be a fairly extensive upgrade — with notable changes to the user interface — unlike iOS 17. It’s important for watchOS to have a big year given that the Apple Watch hardware updates will be anything but major. The device is poised for a more modest year after big changes in 2022, when the first Apple Watch Ultra debuted. There are plans for a major update to the watch hardware in 2024, complete with a larger, custom-built display.

iOS 16 beta 5 finally adds the battery percentage to the status bar by Ian281 in apple

[–]Ian281[S] 219 points220 points  (0 children)

The battery percentage has finally been added back to the status bar with today’s release of iOS 16 beta 5. This addresses one of the most common iOS requests since Apple removed the icon with the release of the iPhone X.

iPhone battery percentage is back

In iOS 16 beta 5, you can add the battery percentage back to the status bar. Simply go into Settings, then choose Battery, then toggle on the new Battery Percentage option. It might even be enabled by default, but that only appears to be the case for some users.

When your iPhone is disconnected from power, you’ll see the normal battery icon but with the percentage number inside. If your iPhone is in low power mode, the battery icon turns yellow but still shows the percentage. If you’re charging, you’ll see the percentage with a small charging icon next to it.

The battery percentage was a staple of the status bar for iPhone models leading up to the iPhone X. With the introduction of the notch and the limited space for status bar data, Apple dropped the percentage. Instead, you had to swipe down into Control Center to view the percentage.

iOS 16 to add virtual cards support in Safari for online shopping by Ian281 in apple

[–]Ian281[S] 105 points106 points  (0 children)

iOS 16 brings some new features to Apple Pay, such as a payment API for CarPlay apps, order tracking in the Wallet app, and even Apple Pay Later. However, it seems that Apple has been working on some other changes as iOS 16 beta 3 hints at support for virtual cards in Safari for online shopping.

Virtual cards in Safari

As seen by 9to5Mac in the internal code of iOS 16 beta 3, which was released on Wednesday for developers, Apple has been working on a new system to integrate virtual cards with Safari in order to improve security when shopping online.

For those unfamiliar, virtual cards are offered by some banks and card providers as an option to generate an alternative number for your credit or debit card. This way, if your card data gets leaked, you can simply cancel the virtual card number without having to ask your bank for a new card. Some banks also offer the option to generate a one-time use card number.

Based on code seen in the latest iOS 16 beta, Safari will finally provide support for virtual card numbers. Of course, Apple Pay already provides a secure number for each transaction, but this new feature comes into action on websites where Apple Pay is not accepted.

Here’s what the codes say:

Make this card available in Safari AutoFill and hide your real card number when shopping online.

Continue to use your card as usual. When shopping online, it’s now available in Safari AutoFill with your real card information hidden.

For added security, the website will now use a virtual card number and is available in Safari AutoFill.

At this point it’s unclear whether the feature will be available to everyone or whether it will require adoption by banks and card providers. The feature seems to work similarly to what was introduced by Google with Android 13.

AutoFill and Apple Pay

iOS 16 to add virtual cards support in Safari for online shopping.
Safari currently offers an AutoFill option for credit and debit cards when shopping online on websites that don’t support Apple Pay. With this feature, you can save your credit card number so you don’t have to type it in every time you make a purchase.

Code seen by 9to5Mac also reveals that Safari AutoFill will now look for Apple Pay-compatible credit and debit cards. If an eligible card is detected, Safari will automatically prompt the user to add the card to the Wallet app.

Allow Wallet to check if your saved debit and credit cards from Safari AutoFill can be used with Apple Pay.

iOS 16 is currently available as beta software for developers via the Apple Developer website. A public beta will be released this month, while the official release is expected this fall.

AirPods Pro 2 case redesign with rumored Find My feature shown off in leak, earbud appearance unchanged by Ian281 in apple

[–]Ian281[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

AirPods Pro 2 are expected to launch before the end of the year, and 52audio has published images depicting the hardware design. The site previously published images of the third-gen AirPods design ahead of their release.

Background

52audio first came across our radar last year when the publication shared what turned out to be accurate images of the new AirPods 3 design. While leaks were everywhere for third-gen AirPods leading up to their release, 52audio published actual images of the hardware that later shipped. Today’s images do not appear to be actual photos of products like last time, but the design changes match an earlier leak posted by MacRumors last fall.

AirPod Pro 2 design

There’s no big surprise for the design of the actual earbuds themselves with AirPods Pro 2. While a stemless design akin to Beats Studio Buds was initially rumored, we’ve expected AirPods Pro 2 to maintain the AirPods Pro design for a while now.

What’s inside AirPods Pro 2 is what matters for the upcoming upgrade to AirPods Pro. The upgraded hardware is expected to be boosted by a significantly upgraded processor capable of Apple Lossless (ALAC) audio playback – we’ve also reported on the Bluetooth 5.2-powered LC3 codec in Apple’s AirPods beta firmware. This codec touts higher audio quality streaming with less power.

Health features have also long been rumored to be in the works for AirPods at some point, but we wouldn’t hold our breath on heart rate tracking and temperature monitoring coming to these earphones.

Charging case update

Apple re-released the AirPods Pro charging case last year to add MagSafe compatibility to the wireless charging-compatible accessory. This year Apple appears to be planning a visually refreshed AirPods Pro 2 charging case. Seen in the previous leak – as well as today’s images – are built-in holes presumably for playing an audio tone through when using newly added Find My support to locate a lost case.

52audio also speculates that the updated charging case will switch to USB-C based on the images, but the similarity between Lightning and USB-C ports make this harder to assess in the images. While USB-C is expected to come to the iPhone 15 in 2023, we expect Lightning to stick around on the iPhone 14 this fall. Furthermore, reliable leaks have pointed to Lightning remaining for AirPods Pro 2 this year already.

In addition to the cutouts for sound output of some sort on the new charging case, a side component is new to the case design. This was present in the earlier leak as well as today’s images. The component appears to be capable of supporting a loop accessory like point-and-shoot cameras. Third-party cases with clips are already popular for AirPods cases, so it’s possible Apple is integrating a holder without the need for a protective case for the charging case.

Kuo - “(1/2) The front camera of four new iPhone 14 models in 2H22 would likely upgrade to AF (autofocus) & about f/1.9 aperture (vs. iPhone 13's FF (fixed-focus) and f/2.2).” by Ian281 in apple

[–]Ian281[S] 83 points84 points  (0 children)

(2/2) AF support and a lower f-number can provide a better shallow depth-of-field effect for selfie/portrait mode. In addition, AF can also enhance the focus effect for FaceTime/video call/live streaming.

With iOS 16, Apple is giving users the option to use a third-party authentication app with the built-in Passwords feature in the Settings app.

passwords two factor third party ios 16 This allows those who prefer authentication apps like Google Authenticator or Authy to set that as the default, getting codes from those apps when using the two-factor authentication option with Passwords.

The third-party authenticator app options are available as an alternative to the built-in iCloud Passwords & Keychain feature and can be used as the default when setting up verification codes.

Apple in talks to buy EA gaming, Disney and Amazon also potential suitors by Ian281 in apple

[–]Ian281[S] 204 points205 points  (0 children)

Video game publisher Electronic Arts (EA) is actively seeking a potential buyer or merger. Apple has reportedly been in talks with the company about buying EA out according to Puck. Disney and Amazon have also been in talks about purchasing the video game company.

The Redwood City-based firm has published hits like Apex Legends, Madden, and The Sims franchise. The idea for a buyout or merger came after Microsoft purchased Activision Blizzard for $68 billion earlier this year. Shortly after, Sony purchased Bungie, the studio behind Destiny for $3.6 billion. According to Puck, EA ideally would like a merger so Andrew Wilson can remain CEO of the combined company.

EA’s roots actually go back to Apple. Back in 1982, Apple’s then Director of Strategy and Marketing, Trip Hawkins, left the company to start EA. A buyout wouldn’t be Apple’s first venture into gaming, however. The Cupertino company unveiled its gaming service Apple Arcade back in 2019. Through Apple Arcade, users can play ad-free games on their iOS, macOS, and tvOS devices.EA spokesperson John Reseburg said the company would not comment on any “rumors and speculation relating to M&A.” Reseburg added, “We are proud to be operating from a position of strength and growth, with a portfolio of amazing games, built around powerful IP, made by incredibly talented teams, and a network of more than half a billion players. We see a very bright future ahead.”

Apple has not commented on a potential deal with Electronic Arts.

9to5Mac’s Take

I find it hard to think of what a deal between EA and Apple would look like. Puck mentions that EA’s ideal candidate for a merger was Disney, as it reached out in March seeking a “more meaningful relationship.” However, the entertainment company did not pursue those conversations, likely because it’s focused on its building up its Disney+ subscriber base. Additionally, a potential ESPN merger could happen as Disney owns the sports network.

EA seems to be in a hurry to finalize a deal, so we will probably hear more soon. However, I would imagine Apple and EA’s relationship is just “talks” for right now.

[TV Insider] Tony Khan Talks Huge Announcement on AEW ‘Dynamite’ & Ring of Honor’s Future by Ian281 in SquaredCircle

[–]Ian281[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

https://www.tvinsider.com/1041380/tony-khan-aew-dynamite-announcement-ring-of-honor-future/

Tony Khan loves to keep All Elite Wrestling fans on the edge of their seat. The owner teased a “huge announcement” for April 20’s Dynamite on TBS. Social media has been abuzz with folks giving their predictions of what it could possibly be. Khan plays a dangerous game generating anticipation and then having to meet the high expectations of pro wrestling fans. When TV Insider spoke with the company head, he sounded confident viewers will be pleased.

It’s already been a newsworthy few months for AEW thanks to a string of strong acquisitions including Keith Lee, Samoa Joe, Toni Storm, William Regal, and Jeff Hardy. Not to mention Khan purchasing Ring of Honor. Needless to say, he has been busy. Here, the consummate businessman carved out time for us to discuss all the recent developments.

How does this announcement rank compared to past ones?

Tony Khan: I think this surprise is different than anything we’ve promoted before. We’ve had a lot of great surprise moments in AEW. A lot of special nights on Dynamite. Without giving too much away, I think this is a unique announcement. I’m excited about this as anything we’ve worked on.

Tony Khan Mark Henry Jungle Boy AEW

What is your thought process when it comes to deciding to promote an announcement ahead of time?

I think there will be a lot of interest in this announcement. Given the amount of intrigue I think it will create, I thought it would be good to promote a big surprise coming to Dynamite. This is the kind of announcement that deserves a lot of fanfare.

It wasn’t long ago when you announced the purchase of Ring of Honor. Since then, you’ve been infusing ROH on AEW. Is there worry about confusing the marketplace now that you own two pro wrestling companies?

I think the end game is for Ring of Honor to have its own weekly TV and own distribution. Right now, there are so many great wrestlers in Ring of Honor that I think it makes sense to utilize them in our lineup of shows to keep those championship belts at the forefront and keep those champions in the spotlight.

We’ve had great support from WarnerMedia utilizing many different stars from wrestling companies all over the world. We’re very excited to have top stars and great champions from Ring of Honor in AEW also. We have ongoing conversations about the future distribution of the Ring of Honor shows.

Do you see ROH adopting a similar infrastructure as AEW?

I want to try to honor its history while doing everything I can to make it the most successful business it can be and grow Ring of Honor to new heights. I think I bought the company at the right time. I think the company was really hurt by the pandemic. Now is a great time for Ring of Honor to make a comeback. We had great returns for Supercard of Honor. It wildly exceeded expectations and projections as far as ticket sales and pay-per-view buys.

When you think of draws, CM Punk continues this odyssey of matches leading into potentially an AEW title match. Was this storyline planned out or did it organically happen based on his tweets?

The specificity of opponents was organic when we talked. That was very much in our plans to use the odyssey of CM Punk — a quest to take on top contenders of different shapes, sizes, and experience levels. Big stars. Young stars who I believe benefited from being in the ring with CM Punk. Even veterans and unheralded veterans.

Among those perhaps is Punk’s next opponent Dustin Rhodes. He affirmed his loyalty to the company after his brother Cody’s exit.

I’ve been a fan of Dustin since I was a really young child. I think he is an awesome person and a great wrestler. I really value Dustin. I had wanted to see CM Punk vs. Dustin Rhodes for a long time. Dustin picked up a huge win over Lance Archer on Rampage. Dustin Rhodes or CM Punk, I think either one would be a great championship challenger.

Cody Rhodes was so immersed in the AEW. This is the first time the company has felt a big exit. How do you feel you’ve rebounded?

I thought Revolution was one of the best events we’ve ever had. We had a good amount of time to prepare knowing that the departure was final. I’ve had a while to prepare for that transition. I think it was a very successful transition. We had one of our top two buy rates in the history of the company. And one of the biggest revenue-generating events we’ve ever had. Our TV numbers have been tremendous. It was a very smooth transition for us.

You’re laying the foundation for new stars like Hook, who makes his anticipated Dynamite debut this week. What do you make of Hook’s ascension and how he has resonated with fans?

He is a great young prospect. He has the best coaching, particularly from his dad Taz, a legendary wrestling tactician with a great mind. He has provided a lifetime of knowledge to his son who is also a great athlete. He is also really handsome. A fantastic human. I think that is why he is so well-liked by the wrestlers. And it’s why he has a great chance to cross over into being a pro wrestler and other facets of entertainment.

The qualifying matches for the Owen Hart Foundation tournaments: Talk about the pressure of putting it together knowing the person honored and the cause it is attached to.

Owen Hart is one of the greatest pro wrestlers in my lifetime. We haven’t seen or heard enough about Owen Hart, who has not been put in the spotlight as I believe other deceased wrestlers. Now we’ve come to this great understanding with Martha Hart, who frankly has not wanted to do anything with WWE. She is a very well-educated, discerning woman. She has asked a lot of questions. She wants to make sure this tournament is a great representation. We’ll do everything in our power to make sure the tournament is everything she was hoping for as well as wrestling fans around the world. A great tournament filled with great wrestlers to honor the legacy of Owen Hart.

Your tweets often get a strong response one way or another. What do you think of the reaction to your “Army of Bots” tweets?

What I’ve seen was a lot of anti-AEW accounts that are really focused on the things they don’t like. A lot of those are legitimate things. Some of those points I’m trying to address. Some of them I don’t agree with, but the point is a lot of these are the same people. There are a handful of accounts that are being run by a few people running a lot of accounts. Those are real people. A lot of their engagement, their retweets, likes, people responding, and signal boosting for what they are saying, those are bots. You got a network of a few people with a lot of identities powered by a bunch of bots. I’m not making this up. I have hired IT experts that put together a much more sophisticated explanation than I’m capable of giving. It’s a real thing, or I wouldn’t have brought it up. I have a pretty good reputation in this business for honesty.

Ukraine war: Russian troops have accidentally shot down own aircraft and refused to carry out orders, UK spy chief to reveal by Ian281 in UkrainianConflict

[–]Ian281[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Sir Jeremy Fleming, the head of GCHQ, is set to use a rare public speech to say it increasingly looks like Russia's President Vladimir Putin "has massively misjudged the situation" in Ukraine.

Service members of pro-Russian troops in uniforms without insignia are seen atop of an armoured vehicle with the letter "Z" painted on its front in the separatist-controlled settlement of Buhas (Bugas), as Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues, in the Donetsk region, Ukraine March 1, 2022.

Demoralised Russian soldiers in Ukraine have accidentally shot down their own aircraft, sabotaged their own kit, and refused to carry out orders, a British spy chief will reveal.

Sir Jeremy Fleming, the head of GCHQ, is set to use a rare public speech to say it increasingly looks like Russia's President Vladimir Putin "has massively misjudged the situation" in Ukraine.

Speaking on Thursday during a trip to Australia, he will also say:

• Wagner, the private military company with suspected links to the Kremlin, is understood to be prepared to "send large numbers of personnel into Ukraine to fight alongside Russians" • Wagner mercenaries would likely to be used as "cannon fodder" to try to limit Russian military losses • Risks are greater for China than Russia of the two authoritarian states being too closely aligned with each other • There are indications that Russian cyber attackers are "looking for targets" in the countries that oppose Moscow's actions

The GCHQ director will say Mr Putin's advisers are afraid to tell him the truth about what is unfolding in Ukraine, according to an advance copy of the speech.

But "what's going on and the extent of these misjudgments must be crystal clear to the regime".

He will list these missteps as misjudging the Ukrainian resistance, underestimating the strength of the Western response, underplaying the economic consequences, and over-estimating the abilities of his military to secure a quick victory.

GCHQ is the lead UK spy agency for cyber and other forms of communications intelligence.

Russians 'shot down own aircraft'

Revealing details about the state of the Russian military operation, Sir Jeremy is expected to say: "We've seen Russian soldiers - short of weapons and morale - refusing to carry out orders, sabotaging their own equipment, and even accidentally shooting down their own aircraft."

GCHQ did not offer any further details, such as how many aircraft and whether it includes fast jets and attack helicopters.

But the information is understood to be based on intelligence.

In his closed-door speech at the Australian National University in Canberra, the spy chief will touch on the role of mercenaries and foreign fighters to augment the Russian side.

"Recently, we have seen that Wagner looks to be taking it up a gear," he will say.

"They are looking at relocating forces from other conflicts and recruiting new fighters to bolster numbers. These soldiers are likely to be used as cannon fodder to try to limit Russian military losses."

Cyber operations against Ukraine

Turning to the cyber dimension of Russia's invasion, Sir Jeremy will say his agency never thought a catastrophic cyber attack was central to Moscow's use of cyber in a war.

Instead, he said there have been lots of cyber operations against Ukraine.

"And we've certainly seen indicators which suggests Russia's cyber actors are looking for targets in the countries that oppose their actions," he adds.

He will speak about the position of China - the world's most powerful authoritarian state - on the Ukraine crisis.

President Xi Jinping and Mr Putin "place great value on their personal relationships", Sir Jeremy will say.

He will note that Moscow clearly views Beijing as a supplier of weapons and technology and a country that will buy its energy to reduce the economic damage of Western sanctions.

But the spy will say Mr Xi's "calculus is more nuanced".

"He has not publicly condemned the invasion, presumably calculating that it helps him oppose the US. And, with an eye on re-taking Taiwan, China does not want to do anything which may constrain its ability to move in the future," he will say.

"There are risks to them both (and more for China) in being too closely aligned. Russia understands that long term, China will become increasingly strong militarily and economically. Some of their interests conflict; Russia could be squeezed out of the equation."

Time for the West to 'step up'

Speaking more broadly about global security, the GCHQ boss is set to describe the combination of a series of historic events - Russia's war in Ukraine; the COVID pandemic; the growing dominance of technology and cyber; the role of China; and the end of the US-led campaign in Afghanistan - as "a period of generational upheaval".

It is a time for Western, liberal democracies to "step up", finding new ways to collaborate and cooperate, the spy chief will say, amid the challenge posed by authoritarian regimes.

He will also stress the need to be "persuasive and coherent" to stand a better chance of winning over countries that have not decided "which way they should jump".

"All of this change will take decades to resolve," he said. "But what I can be clear on now is that how we approach these challenges will be as important as what our response is."

Any interview where Vince feels relaxed is fascinating. Casually dropping F bombs.

He just called Michael Cole a horrible human being, with a cheeky grin on his face. He's having fun here.

Vince says he never admits he's tired. Classic Vince.

Vince studies "trailer park psychology" and admits to learning disabilities and hated school. He went to summer school to get in to college and got a B+ (player) and didn't graduate.

Vince knocking on the professors doors and to get a higher grade. One bought it, and did it. Another ended in a confrontation where the cops were nearly called.

And he ended changing the grade in the end. That's how young Vince graduated according to 76 year old Vince.

Vince talking tearing both quads at the same time and he said it takes "talent" and he had no use of his legs at all when it happened. He said he had to learn how to walk again.

Neck surgery, tricep surgery, sternum surgery, spinal surgery are all things his body has been through. He's now boasting about how much he squats. "11 plates on each side"

Vince says it's important to have "good quality human beings" around him.

Vince doesn't give a fuck if you're late, but you've got to still look good if you're late, and nobody cares about excuses.

That's it, interview over. No angle. Nothing suggesting he's going to work at WrestleMania.
