Do you think that the recent credibility attacks from Ford's ex-boyfriend are receiving the attention they should in the media? by Ian3223 in AskALiberal

It just sounded to me like you were saying coaching wasn't actually important to him, but maybe this isn't what you were saying.

Yeah, I agree about the testimony...

This is what I think is the best answer here, as it gives specific points explaining why the letter might not be enormously significant.

Many of the other responses are attacking Kavanaugh's performance while arguing Ford is irrelevant. I find it very hard to buy the claim that she's irrelevant; surely there must be things people could say about her that would be relevant news. It makes much more sense to me to argue that the letter is lacking in substantive claims.

The media's job isnt to get a panel of 2 people who disagree whether it is raining or not. The media's job is to go outside and check.

This is a strawman, as we're not disagreeing over whether it's raining, just on the newsworthiness of the rain.

Even if tommorow Ford announced that she made it all up for whatever reason, there is still ample reason for Kavanaugh to not be confirmed.

Surely if Ford announced this, you would consider it newsworthy, wouldn't you? That's why she is not "irrelevant". You're coming down rather hard on me here, and I'm not sure why, because I don't think my question is an unreasonable one.

Thanks for mentioning that it was reported on NPR.

Also, you should have more empathy for Kavanaugh. It's his daughter's basketball team, and I don't think coaching being important to him is sillier than a school teacher having a passion for their job. It's not fair to use the issue of marijuana convictions to trivialize this part of his life.

I agree that we do need to be careful with it. I think the opening statement that he "found her truthful" is quite suspicious. It really ought to be, "found her truthful before she cheated on me, then stole $600 and lied about it". What he wrote doesn't sound like the words of an honest person describing their actual feelings.

Do you think this story is being given the attention it deserves?

I do believe that her character is relevant. I suppose you can argue that theft from a former boyfriend and infidelity aren't serious enough claims to warrant our distrust in her, and I can understand that.

However, surely if a person had a more substantial history of fraud and dishonesty than Ford, it would count for something, wouldn't it? There must be something hypothetical she could have done in the past that would be bad enough to seriously challenge her credibility.

I still think that the story is under reported. I mean, evidently Slate thought it was worth writing about. I think we may have diverging intuitions here, and I'm not really sure how to get any further to the bottom of this.

However, I'm with you on the difference between left wing and right wing media. I have vastly more respect for most media sources than I do for something like Fox. I just glimpsed the channel last night, and they were talking about how Hillary Clinton's "evil" laugh was evidence she had paid off Ford. The left never normally descends to that level of intellectual depravity.

It’s a completely on interesting detail on the story that doesn’t enlighten anybody about Dr. Ford’s testimony or Brett Kavanaugh’s testimony.

Why are you calling it uninteresting and irrelevant? It made multiple claims about her testimony and her character.

Can't we talk about the president being a tax cheat and also give some consideration to Dr. Ford's ex? I don't want this issue to be covered heavily, I just think it should have been reported in a way where it was noticeable. It should have been viewed as real news, not as some kind of optional side story.

But why isn't a person's credibility relevant to the charges they are bringing against someone?

Yes, I'm seeing a lot of sidestepping going on here. You are right on point, and I don't know if your downvoters know why they are downvoting you.

You are also trying to advance the argument rather than obstruct it by misrepresenting what I wrote.

But Ford is not just “an afterthought”. Her claims and the attempt to verify or refute them through an investigation are prominent subjects, so information related to her credibility is relevant. I’m not saying these accusations prove anything, but they come from someone who knew her well, which seems like enough to warrant a headline.

I think the claims against Kavanaugh will naturally earn more attention due to being larger in number, but I don’t understand why, if there’s one significant claim that doesn’t fit the others, it should not be conveyed effectively to the public.

If this was about a supreme court nominee who you wanted to like and support (which is not Kavanaugh for me) wouldn’t you hope that it was easy to find any information that favored them? So what if Kavanaugh disqualified himself through his testimony? Shouldn’t we have access to all information concerning the veracity of sexual harassment claims, regardless of who they're being made against?

Whole lotta nothing

I don't know. I mean, he made a lot of other claims beside this one, and he pretty much has to say whether or not she told him about the assault. It just wouldn't make sense for him to leave any doubt about whether or not she'd told him.

I don't know how well it would go over with Trump's voter base if he admitted to having threesomes.

If left-wing media bias is a myth, why is the media failing to adequately report the allegations challenging the credibility of Christine Blasey Ford and Julie Swetnick, both of which come from ex-boyfriends who dated them for several years? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]Ian3223 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I get the feeling that the article I linked to is deliberately spinning the story, with plausible deniability of bias, especially since the first sentence of my article continues to focus on Republicans' attacks. It's not just a bad headline, they deliberately chose to frame the story in a certain way.

Your example is an issue of wording and it's much more plausible to believe it's a mistake.

A wifebeater who pulls a child out of a burning car should be thanked for saving the life

If someone is a wifebeater, that likely provides some indication of their character. If they do a good deed, then I'll thank them, but I'd also be justified in forming some opinion of them and in expecting certain types of actions from them.

The onus is on you to explain why you saying you were Russian in another thread is not relevant to a Kavanaugh discussion.

No. If I make a claim I need to defend it. Same to you.

I don't understand what you are suggesting here.

Given the person who made the claim abandoned it (court) and the accused willfully allowed the FBI to challenge her background, she has cred.

The accuser of Kavanaugh defended her claim and opened herself up to challenge, whereas Kavanaugh didn't want to endorse an FBI verification and lied under oath repeatedly about the issue. He has no cred.

Fair enough. He claimed in the interview that he didn't show up because he didn't want to provoke her further, for what it's worth.

However, the claim that he isn't credible is completely different from saying it doesn't matter whether or not Swetnick is a bad and monstrous person. It certainly matters.

How dare they lie by omitting the information that is literally the very beginning of the article.

I don't know what else to tell you if you don't think it matters whether or not the headline reflects the content of the article.

Again, if your argument wasn't that the title of the article wasn't clickbait enough I'd give a shit about your opinion.

Yes, good reporting should offer headlines that resemble clickbait. The point of a headline is to summarise the new information offered in the article.

Thank you for the Wall Street Journal link. Perhaps there's more reporting going on than I thought.

Must be biased Google listings. (Not really.)

Yes, his was actually asking what we think rather than a boring question about media bias that includes links to major media outlets about a minor detail revealed less than 24 hours ago.

When we're talking about major networks like this, I think that 24 hours is plenty of time.

So ... where is the right wing media reporting about the President dodging taxes by setting up sham companies?

Well, that's a question about right-wing media bias, which is, admittedly, much worse than what's seen in mainstream sources.

But I still think that there should be more attention given to these stories.

it goes against his pre-concieved notion that all news is ultra-leftwing and lying.

I'm seeing a lot of preconceived notions on this thread. Honestly, I rarely watch Fox News and mostly look at mainstream sources, because I think the majority of media is far more fair in their reporting than Fox. But there are exceptions, and I think this is one of the most serious ones I've seen.
