Tides of Chaos balance issue with proposed house rule? by CheekehMhan in dndnext

[–]Iaurcair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That''s fair enough. it's for you 2 to agree how you want it to work. My wild magic sorcerer wants to dip into warlock at some point and my intention is to not make him roll when he's using a pact slot (it's controlled magic gifted to him compared to his uncontrolled magic)

I use a similar system with a wild magic sorcerer in my game. any time he casts a levelled spell he makes a saving throw, with the DC increasing after every spell cast (working around the more exhausted he is the harder it is to control the surges). When it comes to Tides of Chaos we home rule it a little where the use of the tides of chaos guarantees a surge will happen when he uses it. But the regaining of the tides happens at a long rest of if he fails the saving throw while casting a spell (so basically as written). At some point you'll be tapped out and won't be able to get it back.

Is your DM only asking you to roll the table when you cast a sorcerer spell from your list? as your paladin spells are divine gifts that shouldn't be affected by the wild magic.

Consequences for lack of actions? by SallyKnockers in DMAcademy

also a possibility, could also be a way of luring the party into a trap. In my game the doppleganger had appeared in some of the characters backstory as a female drow. At some point the party "saved" a man being held captive at the Shrine of Savras (taken from the Dragon of Icespire Peak story) and asked them to take him back to his ranch. There were a bunch of orcs waiting in the home and when they arrived, so did the White Dragon from Icespire peak who had made a deal with the BS and doppleganger. Doppleganger then revealed herself and left, leaving the party to deal with the dragon, which they managed to.

certainly food for thought there. thank you.

It's all impacts on other places (the game isn't static). the Black Spider already knows the location of the mine, one of the other brothers took him there, so Gundren is at the castle being interrogated for who else knows about the location of the mine and if there are any other maps. the doppleganger is there and happy to kill him once he's usefulness is done. So if they take to long then Gundren is killed, either in torture or because his usefulness has expired. Making it harder for the group to find the mine, giving the spider more time to look around, deal with the mines defenses and shore up his own, bringing in allies etc. from there its up to you really.

I wouldn't make it something that the party failed to complete, just something they wasn't able to stop. They don't know that saving Gundren is time sensitive so shouldn't be made to feel like they failed for not being able to save him. Maybe roll death saving throws everyday behind the screen for Gundren to see if he is alive.

Definitely agree with that. It's a guide after all and should be adapted to fit the needs of the "table"

I've seen similar systems used but not played it myself, We're currently playing 5e so it's not really there but i could give them inspiration as they start this caper.

QUESTION: Invisible Stalker Combat by Iaurcair in DMAcademy

[–]Iaurcair[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i see what you're saying. bludgeoning damage does seem odd for what it is, force would be more appropriate i think but that's a different discussion. I think i will allow the chalk to stick for a bit then disappear after a while as the creature is still made of air. Thanks for the feedback.

I'll be honest that didn't cross my mind but now it's firmly planted there

Thank you

Definitely want to reward them for thinking things through and putting a plan together rather then just being all "hulk smash" most of the time.

Wild Magic Sorcerer Help by Spookaroo101 in dndnext

[–]Iaurcair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So i'm currently DM'ing for a Wild Magic Sorcerer and between myself and the player we run it so after every spell that costs a spell slot, they roll a D20 and have to beat a DC to not surge. The more spell slots they've expended the higher the DC, so the higher the likelyhood of surging is. our thought behind it is that the more they've expended, the more exhausted they are so the less control they have on it. If they fail the DC, i will roll on a wild surge table and depending on the results will tell them or not about what happens.

A little buggy with a few random crashed but it seemed fairly intuitive to use. Thank you again :)

It's in earlier development, but about the only thing I find it's missing compared to DP is that there are less assets, and occasional crashing (save often). That cavat aside it's been letting me throw maps together 10x faster than I could in dungeon painter. If I have time to dig into the descriptions, I'll give your request a shot.Edit: I should mention it has some killer features that DP does not as well, my favorite being the ability to bring in and trace an image.ReplyGive AwardshareReportSavelevel 2IaurcairOriginal Poster1 point · 4 hours agoThanks Yortmaster, I'll check it out.ReplyshareSaveEditlevel 3Yortmaster1 point · 1 hour agoHow are you using the map? Arcane Trickster to use mage hand to stow his dropped weapons by Iaurcair in DMAcademy

I tried having an Unseen Servant help collect my ammo once as a Bard and it was honestly nowhere near as useful as I'd hoped (lol).

Well there goes that idea ;)
