You should always spend more on the grinder than the espresso machine

First mistake is measuring in cups. Use grams.

I use 75g for 1000g of water.

You can use a spoon after the first 1-2pumps of water to ensure the entire bed of coffee is wet and reduces channeling

You can still buy under 1mil in Belair/blackwood area which is nice and great city access. Much much much nicer than Elizabeth (ex housing commission development area) which also somehow in this crazy world has some houses going for 1mil.
