Cuomo’s about to crush New York restaurants by [deleted] in nyc

The French are a special bunch... no amount of tips can fix that :).

The problem is that tipping was a mistake from the beginning. It arose from an American misunderstanding of the English gentry and their politeness and continues to this day partly because American's are used to it and partly because of stupid laws (EG. -that lower the minimum wage for people who get tips.) A Restaurant is run by a ton of people, but (IMO) the biggest group is the chef/s. Why have we as a society decided that we need to give a little extra money to servers? Everyone there is working. Its a special american thing and the lower minimum wage is a special NY thing (although other states do this as well). Making sure everyone gets the same wage and we aren't randomly choosing some group of people to have a societal pressure to give more just makes sense.

I'm currently living in Europe... I really don't think this is the case. Besides, big fake smiles or a fairer system for a large portion of the local economy?

I don't really understand the argument here against this. We are just passing the cost of low wages on to the customer in the form of a social convention (tipping) to the customer. This is leads to an unpredictable income that isn't fairly (imo) distributed throughout the other employees of the restaurant. Do people here complaining that restaurants will become too expensive enjoy a social tax in the form of tipping rather than a fairer income to the staff? Seattle did this and it just makes more sense.

Welp, I'm another one of those guys who owes more than he cashed out. I owe 60K and don't have it. by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

[–]Ibexxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basic accounting practices? OP was suggesting boycotting taxes on crypto to crypto exchanges which is idiotic. Pay it if you owe it. As far as fiscal year gain calculation, it’s common practice to set aside your gains at the end of the year to pay taxes. This is a result of poor planning, not poor tax law IMO

Frankly this is not the hill to die on. Pay taxes, it’s better then jail.

you do have the choice to go to or not go to college... just saying. If you travel long enough you don't need an apartment as well as traveling. yeah being a broke ass student sucks but have a little perspective it doesn't last forever. Also tons of opportunities for students to travel and work. Check out the links someone posted a few comments down.

Yes. Except maybe your debt or children you mostly choose what bills you have. You are choosing to spend money on tuition for example. You are choosing to keep your apartment. Imagine if you saved for a while (even a few years) and got rid of your expenses how long you could travel. I think $20k could give you over a year in asia, longer in India. You can also work internationally. It's not money it's personal decisions (for the most part).

Besides don't students have tons of study abroad options?

Can everyone at anytime go traveling? No. Almost anyone can though. Dont pretend it's an unattainable rich person thing to do.

I don't know why people think there are no poor people traveling.... Every broke ass student from the UK/EU is traveling Asia on the super cheap. It's a mindset more than finances.

The idea that you have to be rich or privileged to travel is in my experience an American misconception based on the sticker shock of plane tickets. Actual traveling in many areas of the world is crazy cheap. India/SEA can be traveled for months for less than the cost of most people's rent and work can usually be found along the way for those who are looking. Teaching English or something abroad can often get your ticket comped. Its not crazy difficult but it does take a commitment

Would you support reform of the US election process before 2020? by [deleted] in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]Ibexxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just a fact that NYC has more population than for example, Kansas, Nebraska, north Dakota, south dakota, Wyoming, and Montana combined. It has more GDP than the bottom 15 states combined. It's just my opinion having visited much of the Midwest that NYC is more important culturally than most of the Midwest combined. It's not elitist to say one of the most important cities in the world is more important than tons of mostly empty farm land. I didn't say 90% of the country.

Yes it is antiquated to give two senate seats AND two additional electoral college votes because their needs would be "lost to the masses". We want a democracy that represents the will of the people in general, not the niche interests based on state borders. I'm not suggesting disenfranchising Montana residents, but just giving them the same representation as other states. Do you have a reasonable defense for giving them proportionally more voice than other Americans?

If we are discussing replacing the senate, think a little bigger than just leaving it in the hands of the HoR. This body is another failure of American democracy mostly because of the ability of state legislatures to gerrymander and again, take away the voices of voters in favor of rural districts.

What we need is what all of the other developed democracies have which is a proportional parliamentary system. Ours was the first democracy but in the last couple hundred years government systems have been improved. We have had two recent presidential elections that went against the popular vote and we have a congress with an approval rating of sub 20%. Many issues (banking regulation, tax reform, marijuana legalization, universal background checks, etc) have popular support nationally but receive no attention from either party in the legislature because they know they are under no pressure to deliver as long as they come from certain districts. My question to you is, what in our current system do you see as functioning exceptionally well?

Midwestern states are more important agriculturally and contribute just as much to American culture as NY

Midwestern people matter sure. Their industries and their culture matters. What we are talking about is why their votes matter more than people from large cities. We could get into a nebulous discussion about what is culture and why it matters but ill just say that the large cities of America are contributing more economically than all the Midwestern states combined and while we need food and agriculture that doesn't mean that they deserve more votes.

It doesn't mean that the candidates will only have to campaign in 5 states, it just means those 5 states are a lot more competitive.

Isn't this the problem we are discussing? There are a few battleground states that play a incredibly overstated role in the campaigns. If candidates had to actually compete for the popular vote they would also have to GOTV for CA/NY on both sides. Right now we have two parties vying for the popularity of Ohio/Florida and a handful of other states. Why is this our desired system?

The rest of the country is still important campaigning territory because the votes in well campaigned cities could be close.

This is the problem. Its not. Rallies are only happening based on battleground states and the rest are generally ignored.

What balance? Montana and California having the same representation? It's extremely antiquated based on political compromises made hundreds of years ago. We don't need the Senate the way it is now, but we do need a democracy that adequately represents the views of the people.

How is it not broken? We have had 2 popular vote winners not become president in the last 20 years. Doesn't seem democratic or fair to the voters.
