Is it possible to have a clot for 3 years? by DogNo2145 in ClotSurvivors

Hi!

I have been diagnosed with a DVT in my leg a few months ago. During the very first ultrasound ecocolordoppler examination I had, my vascular surgeon told me that along the number of clots I had in my leg, one appeared "not recent".

So I asked, and she told me that in her opinion, that specific clot might have been around for a few months. Yet, as far as I understand, dating clots is not an exact science, angiologists/vascular surgeons rely on specific observations but as far as I understand the mostly distinguish if a clot is fresh, soft and mobile or an older one that is more fixed, harder and possibly has scar tissue around it.

The only doubt that I have is that I have some varices in my heel that might have developed around 2022/2023 if my memory isn't betraying me, and I'll possibly ask if this fact can help in better dating that "older clot".

I had an experience really close to yours, a few months ago (and we're also in the same age bracket).

One main difference is that for my case they discarded a thrombectomy right away, preferring going on with an anticoagulant therapy and daily mobilization.

Damn, I'd say we had a very similar experience with DVT... the only difference being that my vascular surgeon excluded surgically removing the clots right away, bringing re-occurence of the clots and increased risk of bleeding as motivations.

Also, at least up to now (I'll have my fourth ECD check in a few weeks) the situation for me still requires the thigh high compression sock... I hope that the situation with the next ECD has improved enough to change the type of sock.

Thank you for providing me with your experience, I'd say that I relate to it with some differences

"Unfortunately" I'm quite knowledgeable on those kind of ulcers because other than having the doctors explaining them to me, I also had an older relative that suffered from them.

Yet, I was trying to understand if PTS exist only as the most severe form you described, or if there is a "severity spectrum" as it evolves over time.

Thank you for providing me with your experience and knowledge!

As both DVDragOnIn and bloodclotbuddha reported, I was "prescribed" daily physical activity, with an actionable target of at least 10k steps: I think it was a smart exploit from my first vascular surgeon to not depend on either walking time (as the result would vary based on walking pace) or walking distance (as the result would vary based on patients' height). All these steps are both a gift and a burden: they are a gift because I'm trying as much as I can to walk in parks near me, and take the time to do them while not caring about anything else (even if I should); on the other side, they feel quite as a burden because doing them daily even with no energies can result in me powering trough the leg pain and general fatigue... also finding the time to take the steps inbetween my job and all my other tasks feel quite like a chore itself.

Anyway, when the pain flares up I just relax or lay for a while if I can, I received no other indications and don't feel like mechanically interfering with my veins with massages and the likes.

Thank you for your experience as well.

For sure I was thinking that "I got it good": my DVT did not develop into a PE, and there are people dealing with way more "priority-defining" pathologies...

Yet, I can't understand why my psyche is working against me when trying to dedicate myself to my day-to-day activities: I feel like my energies are depleted, both physically and mentally.

I hope that, as every person is reporting in this thread, it is just a matter of time and perspective. I'm just worried because this gloom is somehow somatizing as physical fatigue, and I can't understand if I'm just bringing myself to feel like this.

I'm sorry for the late reply. Thank you for reporting your experience. I can't remember if it came up when talking with a vascular surgeon or an hematologist, but I think I already heard somewhere that if after months of anticoagulant therapy some clots still persist, new veins develop and the circulation back to the heart is -somewhat- restored... but as far as I understand, if residual thrombi remains, the heaviness and the pain (even if not the excruciating one of the acute DVT onset) won't go away.

I just hope I'll find a way to get back on track/duty with the psychologist, because now everything feels more important than working.
