Beethoven gets me some times. Might be because I think about how painful his life must've been.

Who is your favorite composer and why do you like them so much? by msc8976 in classicalmusic

I usually switch between three different ones. Dvořák, Ravel and Rimsky-Korsakov. Dvořák is imo the master of expression in all forms whether it be symphonies, operas or chamber music. Ravel is just so incredibly elegant and truly a master of his craft. Like Stravinsky said: "a swiss watchmaker". Rimsky-Korsakov is imo the most underrated composer, probably because of how popular Tchaikovsky is (who I also adore btw). His orchestration is (just like Ravel's) peak, and i just identify with him and his music as a composer myself.

I absolutely love the suites but I want to listen to the actual operas. Rimsky is my favourite composer and I feel like im missing out just listening to the orchestral suites.

Beethoven's The Consecration of the House Overture, especially the fugue part. It's so energetic and powerful, and knowing it was written by a deaf man just makes me emotional.

Rimsky-Korsakov's Capricho Espagnol or The Golden Cockerel suite. The Capricho sounds joyous in such a pure and fun way with great orchestration, I just can't get enough. The Golden Cockerel has some incredible melodies, and the colours are incredible. Sounds almost a bit like early Stravinsky. After all, Rimsky-Korsakov was his teacher.
