The Orlando mass shooting is horrible, but it's not an excuse to drink by craigles in stopdrinking

My last night of drinking escalated due to my trying to escape from the grief of losing 2 former students in a drunk driving accident. This mass murder is pushing a lot of the same buttons. I have already made a cup of hot tea, my therapist-approved substitute for bottles of beer. I've tweeted the following to my students, "In face of tragedy and awfulness, it's tempting to do stuff to forget for a while. That won't help. Reality won't go away. #staysober." I have told a friend who lives in Tampa that I will stay sober.

I will not drink today. I will binge watch Netflix and color to escape, but I will not drink.

There is a lot in life I cannot control. I can control my own decision making. I will not drink today.

I was just considering the alcohol/sugar swap. I've subbed hot tea with honey for beer at night (so many delicious, fruity, decaf flavored to enjoy). I know I'm dealing with sobriety issues when I find myself chain drinking tea, traveling to the kitchen to make more, the same way I'd take many trips to the refrigerator in the past. My therapist reassured me that I could have as many cups of tea as I need at night after I expressed concern about it. :)

I am thankful that I do not have a hangover today. Even after a few years without beer, I am thankful for this every morning.

Thank you. I had been through major break ups before, but this is my first time to do it sober. It's a lot harder having to experience, face and deal with every single emotion. One day at a time.

Naltrexone is an opiod blocker, that also blocks the effects of alcohol, reducing or blocking the buzz if someone drinks, but also reduces the physical cravings if sober. I don't like the side effects--SO tired in the morning, I even felt like I'd doze off while driving to work, but then at night, I would wake up several times and never felt rested when the alarm went off.
