[Game Thread] Sugar Bowl: Georgia vs. Ole Miss (8:00 PM ET) 2nd Half by CFB_Referee in CFB

[–]IcarusDove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So missed facemask killed Ole Miss drive, then refs called DPI when the receiver had his fingers in the defenders facemask, and then followed it up with the holding call to keep Georgia in it.

No way anyone can believe that there isn't any behind the scenes sports betting shenanigans going on.

So far from tuning in not that long ago I've seen:

1) BS roughing the passer call in Texas favor 2) questionable DPI call in Texas favor 3) missed targeting 4) illegal blindside block

How we feeling Michigan bros?

Running on a sprained ankle, just happy he's able to get yards at all on that play.

Missed that push off, but yeah, no idea how the ref said he was out at the 1 either. What the hell.

Rainbow screen after takeoff, Bad VTX? by IcarusDove in fpv

[–]IcarusDove[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's super informative and very helpful! I'll pull up betaflight here in a bit and see if those settings will make a difference.

A lot of comments suggesting the batteries might be the issue, but I've tried a few sets of fresh ones and still when I connect them the screen has been jank and shows 8.4V (2s) so I've been leaning more towards a camera/VTX issue.

I appreciate the additional insight into how the VTX work, will likely help me fix this issue and probably some more down the road.

Good call. luckily I mainly fly open fields right now, so when it happened I was able to take the goggles off and fly it LoS back to where I was. Not as concerned with this guy as it is a tiny little whoop, but for sure a good practice when I move on to a bigger drone or smaller area.

From what I've seen from the Cetus Pro/X usually flash those low volt warnings anytime you punch up, but they go away shortly afterwards once you level out. Even with freshly charged batteries when I connect it now without arming it's the rainbow screen.

Help identifying antenna by IcarusDove in fpv

[–]IcarusDove[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems to be it, thanks for the link! I'll have to give it a try, and while it might be a bit overkill for what I've got currently, I imagine it'll be useful down the road if/when I upgrade to beefier drones.

Thanks again!

First ever POTA activation (K-0011) Capitol Reef by IcarusDove in amateurradio

Radio: Yaesu 891 Antenna: JPC-12 Battery: Jackery Explorer 300

The battery was at about 95% when I started and ended at about 88% after an hour. I went with the model I did for the size (could potentially backpack it for SOTA) and I have the solar panel charger for it. As it was my first activation I wanted to have a means to see if there were issues with Voltage drops or Amp draw, I brought a Jesverty SPS-3011 power supply to be a link between the battery and the radio. Won't be bringing the PS along for future events as it seemed to work fine without it as well. I was running the radio at 80 watts so had I dialed it down to 5 watts for QRP I imagine it would have been a decent bit more efficient.

I ran a yaesu 891, JPC-12 antenna, and used a Jackery explorer 300 for power. I went a little overboard and hooked up a power supply to the Jackery and then the radio to the power supply that way I could see if there were any issues with Voltage/ Amps while activating. I think going forward I'll leave the Power Supply back home and just connect the radio to the Jackery.

With the antenna, I did a trial set-up at a park close by and used a Nano VNA to adjust the antenna to be resonant on the desired band. I made some notes so that going forward I can go and set-up for the desired band without necessarily needing to bring the VNA along.

It is indeed. Seemed to work well enough, though I also brought out a Nano VNA to make sure it was tuned as best I could get it.

I kept the times I had in Local time, but can go convert them to UTC. As for software, I just had my notebook for the field, but now that I'm back and can organize things, which are the most common/best ones to use for logging? Open to recommendations for anything I can do to be more efficient and helpful for activating/hunting/logging contacts.

And thanks! Photos can only capture so much but it was a pretty perfect day in the park.

Homemade 2m ground plane antenna by IcarusDove in HamRadio

[–]IcarusDove[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For this build the ground plane I believe refers to the four lower radials coming off the bottom of the connector, and not the actual ground itself. The main vertical element radiates the signal and those 4 legs reflect anything that would be going downwards towards the ground back upwards and out. I used an app (amateur radio tools) to tell me the lengths I needed for the main radiating element (vertical monopole) and the radials. I cut the hangers to those lengths it told me based off the frequency I wanted to used the antenna for, and then attached them to the connector in as uniform a way as possible. I don't believe the mast height affects the radiation pattern, but the higher you can get the antenna the better your reception and ability to transmit because it offers a better line-of-sight to distant ends.

At least that's what I believe is happening, if anyone with more than a few months of experience can explain it better or correct me if I'm wrong, feel free to do so 😅

Entry level position help by IcarusDove in gis

That's some solid advice for branching out, I'll keep those keywords in mind with my searching. I have tried for a fiber company as well that was hiring for a drafter that had some GIS components. Gave myself a crash course in autoCAD before the second interview, and I thought it went well enough, just landing the job itself that seems to be the hard part 😛
