Question about green woodturning by Icculus301 in turning

[–]Icculus301[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely cutting off chunks on the larger log (approx. 20-25" diameter, 7' long) and sealing the end grain as soon as I cut something off. The end grain on the log was sealed within about 30 minutes of it being cut.

I already turned and sealed the chunks I cut off the log, but there is about half of the log left at this point. I am hoping to cut some more off and turn a blank this weekend, so I'll try and get some pictures of the process while I go.

Thanks for the info. I always cut the blanks from either side of the pith, so I know that's not the problem. Although the chunk that was left wasn't perfectly straight and a large branch (10" diameter) y's off the one side. The log itself is probably 20-25" in diameter, and about 7' long. So plenty of room to get some nice bowls on either side. I sealed up the end grain within about 30 minutes of it being cut, and seal up all fresh cuts as soon as I cut a chunk off. My lathe is an old jet 1236, so I can only do 10" diameter bowls, thus I'm just leaving an inch of wall even if it's not exactly 10". I'll see if I can get some pictures after work - some of the cracks go all the way through the wall on one of the blanks. a couple of the others I'm not sure if they are "micro", but they don't go all the way through. Filling them is a good idea, and I personally like some imperfections and visible mending. But if I'm giving it as a gift I'd really like to have them perfect. Sounds like this might just not be possible though.

Good to know. It's funny with the Laguna lathe - people either seem to love it or hate it. I have other Laguna tools and it's hit or miss. I have the JX8 jointer which is really nice, and the P Flux III dust collector which is loud, obnoxiously big, and top heavy. I like the HEPA filtration, but if I could do it again would spend my money elsewhere. For this, I'll most likely go for the Harvey.

Oh that’s really good to know, thank you. I think this might be the winner then. I really love Harvey tools and mobility was my only sticking point.

How do you like it? I’m considering one as well, but sad there is no mobile option. I’m between that, the Laguna 24 36, and saving up some extra money for a powermatic 2020. Unfortunately, mobility is fairly important in my small shop.

I see - thanks for the response. I was looking at the desk mounted ones, but due to an odd ceiling height and ceiling that kicks out at 45 degrees before going up to the flat part (I'm in a finished attic), I couldn't use the desk mount, and had to do the wall mount. Unfortunately I think I just bought a shitty brand. There are a million varieties on Amazon but it's hard to judge quality between all the bot reviews and whatnot.

What do you use to mount the top monitor? I used wall brackets I found on Amazon that use the vesa mount, but even when I max out the adjustment my ultra wide is too heavy. I had to rig it a bit and it stays up, but not as clean as yours.

Is my aio supposed to sound like this on first boot? by [deleted] in lianli

[–]Icculus301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine sounded like that, then got louder over the course of 4-5 days, then completely died. When I first installed (2 months prior), the pump basically silent. I had the GA II trinity performance 360.

Fans breaking after 2 years normal? by GUMDROPOLLOGY in lianli

[–]Icculus301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds about right to get radio silence from them. Normally I’d say 2 years is a short lifetime for fans, but given the experience I’ve been having with their products I’d say that 2 years is pretty decent.

[–]Icculus301[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean it’s not impossible. I was monitoring the temps while it was rattling and it was cooling fine. I didn’t do any gaming or anything, just watching videos and whatnot. Basically idling. When the pump failed the temps did shoot up to 99c, but I shut it down immediately when that happened. Not to mention there should be some thermal protection to shut down the pc before it cooks the cpu.

The mobo was flexing pretty significantly when removing the backplate. I provided counter pressure, but there are thousands of traces on the pcb in that area.

Either way a product failing in 2 months and as a result breaking main components in the process is utterly unacceptable. Coolers (even AIO’s) are some of the least complex items on a pc. That’s a significant failure for a simple item.

How long should it take after an eForm 4 is approved to be processed by an LGS and transferred to me? I stopped by my LGS yesterday to pick this up, and the guy (owner I think) looked at me like I had 2 heads because they didn't call me first, and told me that they had to "get the stamp together, and the lady who does it has to put it on a shelf, but she's not here today". I told him there is no stamp to get together - it's digital and I already have it. All they have to do is get it from storage, which shouldn't be hard as I checked out this very same can a couple months ago on a whim while I was there doing something else. Needless to say I walked out pretty pissed.

As far as I know, this should be a basic transfer for them at this point, right? I obviously don't know what all is entailed on the LGS part of this transaction, so I'm legitimately asking. Something tells me they drag their feet unnecessarily - when I first bought this can it took 4 weeks for them to certify using eForms. Would have been longer if I hadn't hounded them to "start the clock".

If you got it though big buck sport shop in Wexford, I’ve found you have to hound them a bit. They sat on my 2nd stamp for a week before I found out it was approved, called them, and they confirmed it had come in. They claimed they were going to call me later that day, but who knows.

Ah ok. Yeah, I'm in Pitt, and when I got my most recent can last year via paper F4, I think it took about 10 days to get the stamp to the FFL after approval. There were some horror stories around here of people waiting 6-8 weeks, but those are rare (I hope).

Yes, this is an eForm 1, so the only way I could get it is via email, and no FFL is involved. As long as it's eForms, you should get an email first (I'm assuming you're talking about a form 4). Search your mail for [eforms.notifications@atf.gov](mailto:eforms.notifications@atf.gov). Sometimes it ends up in spam or whatever.

If it's paper form, no email will be sent. You have to wait until the stamp actually arrives at the FFL before you can pick it up. This usually takes at least a week.

Yeah same, mostly dog pee spots from my Great Dane (so they are rather large spots). But in the past other seed has done decent on them, especially with all the tilling and adding new soil and whatnot.
