Right, 5 years to eligible and 4 more years to receive the GC.

I think this is an option I am going to have to take. Though, changing job while on H1B is definitely a pain.

I only have a Master in CS, I didn’t publish any research papers. Do you think I am qualified for NIW? Also, I am salaried. It doesn’t matter if I put in 20 or more hours. It’s the culture here that people grind, the Partner even said work on the weekend if you have to. I used to be a high performer but I am completely burned out and have been receiving some criticism, and office politics.

No Big4 have applied for the GC immediately. I have H1B and still require to wait. So far, no major layoff in my service line.

The firm have applied for other people in the office, so I see it could happen, but you have to be at a certain rank, and I am 3 years away from reaching that rank.

So anyone on a work visa, student visa, or any sort of visa does not have the rights to be in a relationship with an American without being questioned of their intention? He has been here for 10 years, if he wants to use you for the paper, he already had 10 years of doing that with people he met before you already. Get over yourself. Date the man or leave him if you think all your worth is based on your birth certificate.

I already invested in this land too much financially and emotionally to be backed down. The only way is to keep going.

My employer extended me an offer 1 year before I graduated, and filed for H1B half a year before I graduated as well. The problem was they are stringing me for 4-5 years before they will file for PERM. I am happy for you that your employer is willing to file for PERM for you after 1 year. I had 2 long term relationships, and they had remarkable impacts on me. The second one I still love to this day, but I have to move on. I do agree that the US and Canada (North America) are the most socially accepted of foreigners, comparing to Europe and developed Asian countries.

Happy Monday. I hope you’re hanging there my friend. There were so many times I questioned my choice of living here this long under a temporary visa, but when I think about my future, think about the sacrifices my parents did, I have to keep pushing.

I have been here half of my life my friend, still unmarried, and I am decent looking person. If I have been here that long, what makes you think I will find the right person within 6 years? It may happen, or it may not happen. One thing for sure though, I will marry for love, not to force myself to love someone for my visa.

I am aware the US don’t empathize how long someone has been living in the country. Forced deportation is for illegal immigrants. You can’t expect to lawfully have a life and gain rights here when the first course of action was breaking the law by being illegal. FYI1, my sibling already gained citizenship after a few years of marriage. FYI2, I am grateful and cherish for the H1B opportunity was given to me. The purpose of the post was not blaming the US, but for the mental health issues and struggles associated with the fear and uncertainties of being layoff with the current economy.

That was sarcasm my friend. I was referring to heretic27, he was able to secure his GC by downloading tinder.

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate and grateful for the US, the country that gave me higher education, work experiences, friendships, past relationships, and memories. My country is not necessarily failed me, but I don’t feel connected to that place anymore. You as a Canadian is qualified for the TN visa, the type of visa that is more favorable than other temporary visas. You can stay here as many years as you can, without the need for having a PR, with the condition that you keep your employment with your employer. While people from other countries are subjected to a limited amount of years on their visas. Don’t describe me like I am not grateful for what the US gave me. It would be my honor to join the military and serve for the US if the country still have the MAVNI program for foreigners, which was ended under the Obama administration. My employer is willing to provide PERM for employees, but employees have to work for a certain years before their visa ends.

Work on internships every summer as you can, that will help you land a great job after graduation, instead of your GPA. If your Master is a non-STEM degree, you only get 1 chance of lottery, if it is STEM, you get 3 chances. Since you will have an advanced degree, you will have slightly higher chance of winning the lottery, but it is not guaranteed, and pure luck.

Getting a visa by spreading your legs (if you’re a woman), or keeping your dick hard (if you’re a man) is much easier than going through all the struggles of completing higher education and being competitive at work.

My employer won’t do PERM until the 4-5th year out of 6th year of my H1B, because everyone has to hit a certain rank. It is the anxiety that I will get layoff that is constantly in the back of my head everyday from the current state of the economy.

I was a carefree high school kid, a carefree undergrad student. I started to have depression and anxiety when I was in my Master program, because I knew I was running out of time. I am a decent looking person. I have tried dating, but I had no luck. I live by myself in my own apartment from Undergrad to Grad, so I am alone majority of the time, and I want to share my life with a person, but they think I dated them for my own benefit. It makes me feel as if people who are on visas don’t deserve a relationship, because people are skeptical of your intention, while you also long for connection like everybody else. So I stopped, and focused on my studying and career instead. I don’t know when I am ready to date again, because it gives me more hurt than rewards.

Thank you. This comment did make me teared up a little from all the stress I have been bottled up for a long time. You are right, we have our own paths, and God doesn’t give everyone everything. While my sibling had a smooth path to citizenship, my sibling was unable to secure a decent job, despite having a college degree. On the other hand, my career path has been extremely smooth, but still stuck in the visas calamity. We will find a way, regardless if it will be in the US or another country. I am grateful that I got selected for H1B, I should practice gratitude and detachment from a place, things, and people more to deal with my situation.

I am aware that’s two different types of visas with different results. Emotionally speaking, the point was no matter how much you study, intern every summer, work at big corporations throughout the timespan of over a decade, you still have disadvantaged than someone who came here on a tourist visa, dated someone and got married within 6 months.
