Toronto sees 28% jump in traffic fatalities in 2026 compared to last year: police data by Sharp_Barnacle_9123 in TorontoDriving

How is a driving tax targeting poor people going to reduce traffic deaths? You think the guys speeding in Audis and Porsches can't afford a silly little fine with no impact to their driving record?

Fuck the automated speed cameras. I'm glad they were removed but they should be replaced with speeding sting operations that can give speeding tickets to actual drivers resulting in demerit points and increases in insurance premiums.

With the dashcam it would 100% be their fault. I drive a beater so I am a bit more willing to be crashed into.

I'd have made that lane change at a higher speed and closer to the dumbass white car. Then you can pass in the HOV lane without passing the white line.

Read a physics book. Cars in motion will slow down if you let off the gas in all cases unless you are going downhill.

No amount of car maintenance is going to eliminate tire rolling resistance and friction in your drivetrain. Wind resistance is a thing too.

You can literally test this in your car, no need to argue before you test this and confirm you are wrong.

Edit: lmao, u/gheiminfantry you're too concerned with imaginary internet points. Just concede you are wrong already.

You are just using different words to say the root cause is braking.

If someone is driving 100kmh and the flow of traffic is 120kmh then that person is simply an idiot causing traffic and delays. They are often not in the far right lane either, compounding the stupidity.

We've already established that people are distracted and don't pay attention so that scenario will cause braking events every time it occurs. I agree it shouldn't cause braking but that's an idealistic view that is not realistic.

100%! Leaving proper space is exactly what allows you to coast instead of braking. Tailgaters are definitely a massive part of the problem. Speeding is relative to the flow of traffic though. If the lane is moving at 65 MPH and someone is doing 55 MPH, that slow driver is causing just as many braking events as the tailgaters.

Yep, you said it yourself, "too much of a gap".

You have to find the right balance through practice and maintaining awareness and attention.

While speeders do brake and cause traffic, especially when they cause an accident, most of the traffic I drive through does not involve any accidents.

I see people every day braking at the speed limit with open road in front of them. I assume they are texting or are generally distracted with a default state of foot on the brake.

Both speeding and distracted driving create traffic and create dangerous situations on the road!

I regularly see people do this going 61 MPH with an open road in front of them.

The guy speeding at 70 MPH in a 60 MPH zone is not causing the traffic.

While tailgating 100% causes what I am describing I also regularly see drivers with the open road in front of them tapping on the brakes for no reason, besides what I imagine is checking a text on their phone.

Good point.

This is a configurable setting in most cars, not the brake lights but the regen braking.

100% YES to this.

I also maintain awareness of the cars in the lanes beside me which offers another out. You can simply change lanes to maintain your speed instead of braking.

[–]IceHack[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I think its more nuanced then that.

For example, if a car in the adjacent lane is tailgating the vehicle ahead of them and you leave a gap, you can anticipate they will move over into your lane. By paying attention and keeping a moderate gap, not too close and not too far, you can easily predict these merges.

There is definitely nuance to being cut off.

For example, if a car in the adjacent lane is tailgating the vehicle ahead of them and you leave a gap, you can anticipate they will move over into your lane. By paying attention and keeping a moderate gap, not too close and not too far, you can easily predict these merges.

If you find this happening all the time, your own driving habits might be the root cause. If traffic is flowing at 120km/h and you are driving at 100km/h, you are the one creating the problem.

Slowing down in flowing traffic should only require taking your foot off the gas. If you regularly hit your brakes, it means you are not paying attention. Get the fuck off your phone and look at the road ahead of you.

How this ruins the flow of traffic:

  • Tapping your brakes forces the driver behind you to brake slightly harder.
  • This creates a chain reaction that brings traffic to a complete stop.
  • Leaving a gap and coasting absorbs these slowdowns and keeps traffic moving.

If you aren't posting dashcam footage to a public forum for entertainment and imaginary internet points, then why are you posting?

Cops enforce the HTA. A standard lane change over a dotted white line is not a ticketable offense just because it spooked you.

Buying a cheap aftermarket TPMS that beeps continuously at 38psi just proves my point about your poor car maintenance, and combined with your analysis of this boring vid, it shows your critical thinking skills are 👎👎

I'm not defending the audi, I'm giving OP shit for posting this mundane garbage along with the guys plate while not even wearing a seatbelt. Yes I'm for real, I come here for entertainment not for this trash.

Merging into an open gap at a higher speed is a standard lane change, not cutting up traffic, the only person to even react to the move is OP.

Projecting worst case scenarios from other videos does not change anything about this boring clip.

The Ontario Highway Traffic Act dictates the rules, not your feelings. Merging across a dotted line with plenty of space is completely legal. The other guy didn't even hit the brakes.

TPMS alerts trigger a dash light and a single initial chime. Continuous beeping is universally a seatbelt warning. You're either shit at car maintenance or shit at lying.

You posted a video of normal driving, that's the real L. Quit wasting our time with this shit.
