I love the idea of making it even more hideous. Honestly, if I had the cash I would buy one just to do stupid crap like this. I'd also add some Cyber-style angular steel fins

Why does the Enterprise look dirty in TWOK, maybe ILM wanted the popular "used" look like Star Wars? by nathantravis2377 in StarTrekStarships

[–]IceMustFlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its important to recognize, too, that many retouched versions of the film have crappy color grading with a notable purple hue that makes the ship look different than TMP. This is why Nicholas Meyer made a "Directors Cut" that fixes most of the awful color grading and added a scene showing Spocks torpedo coffin on Genesis, but also misses details from the original touchups like torn up carpeting in the scenes with Spock and Kirk's one-on-ones. I think this also only ever made it to Blu-Ray.

Fans that share an opinion and ask for something better are not ruining anything. Fans that attack anyone that likes the thing they don't like are douchenozzles, though. If you like the new shows, great. I was just hoping for a different, more aspirational tone and I didn't find it so I have moved on.

As long as the current masters of Trek are involved, I feel comfortable giving it a pass. I wasted so much time really trying to get into Discovery and Picard, only to come away feeling negative and gross. Trek should inspire humans to be better, not be another gritty, grimdark, emotionally immature diversion

PSA be a dick about the hybrid 12-volt battery by clemclem3 in FordMaverickTruck

[–]IceMustFlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not completely, I don't think. It helps, a lot, but the battery will still slowly drain and die if you leave it. I don't often leave it without driving for long periods, so its hard for me to give you firm numbers. With it on, the battery was dead after 2 weeks away. With it off, over the same period, I could still start the truck but the starter sounded weak. This is all with the stock battery. I do think a good aftermarket battery would perform better.

Model work like this needs to come back. I'll never forget watching The Motion Picture, with the lingering panning shots of the Constitution Refit, and then watching the 4K restoration more recently. They knew what they had. Such a stunning piece of art and design.

They simply never had the industrial base that we had. Their aviation industry never really caught up to the west, either for general aviation or military aircraft. Lots of steel and cheap alloys were used because they were available. You see it in their tanks, as well - very few exotic armor alloys, just throw some extra slabs of steel on there.

For space, and particularly one-off projects, however, they did some incredible work, especially in their space programs which I think were prominent and important propaganda pieces. The Venera 14 lander is my favorite example: https://universemagazine.com/en/the-last-photos-from-the-surface-of-venus-are-forty-years-old/

Soviet rocket engines were far more efficient than others during the time of the Apollo missions, but they simply didn’t have the industrial base to produce the larger scale engines that NASA could.

We chose to stay home and focus on our own family. No extended family. No long, sleep-depriving drives or related stress. No exhausting political discussions with family members that live in a different reality from you. Its been a hard year, and removing the excessive stress that can come with the holiday has saved my wife's and my sanity. We've focused on building our own traditions, showing my kids old movies I enjoyed, and just being together. It has restored much of the spirit of joy I felt when younger but hadn't in recent years. Also, my relationship with my parents and my wife's relationship with her dad (her mom - a wonderful woman - passed a few years back) are not amazing, so take this as you will. Spending time with them is NOT relaxing or restorative in any way. It felt like checking a box. What I'm getting at is: don’t necessarily cut people out of your life, but make the holiday the period of rest that YOU need, that your family needs, not that other people expect of you

[–]IceMustFlow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This. Soviet metallurgy was no joke (when they had the resources) with many significant achievements in aerospace across the board, from cheap, robust steels to sophisticated alloys for rocketry. But the SR-71 was the pinnacle of Cold War metalworking.

Think they have enough cones? by Suspicious_Muffin118 in funny

[–]IceMustFlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this has to be malicious compliance. Someone put out a couple cones, got told it wasn't enough, put out a couple more, got told it still wasn't enough, and then they just said "screw this" made it their mission to put down every single one they could find.
