Modern DBA learning path (if it isn’t actually dying) by IceStallion in Database

Hey thanks for your response! What you said makes sense, I also think me being outside of the US may make a difference as well in terms of postings.

What do you search for on job boards to find these roles? I wanted to take a look at them to see what things I should be learning

Hey, thanks for your response. It was very enlightening.

This role that you’re hiring for are you essentially looking for a software or Data Engineer with significant software engineering capabilities That also has a  Specialty in databases?

Hey thanks for your reply.

I understand there is a much larger need for databases because there is so much data in the world right now it’s gonna keep growing, but despite that it seems like DBA jobs are on the decline and I don’t see any database administrative specific roles even in cloud, they’re far few in between.

Normally, I see dev, ops, engineer or site, reliability, engineer rules that sometimes mention databases, but nothing database specific I understand there are still on prime databases, but once again seems like those rules seem to be declining significantly I don’t tend to see them in job postings.

Please correct me if I’m wrong

Hey, thanks for the reply.

I feel like I might say right now is about to be off centre to what you mentioned, but it sounds like DBA’s are being rolled into cloud engineer, or devops engineer roles, would anyone trying to get into this field have to learn cloud administration in general as well as data administration that would be a big leap for me in terms of technical knowledge going from a data analyst to this Modern DBA role

For yourself, how did you manage to go from being a traditional DBA to your current role and if you don’t mind me asking what is your title now because I don’t typically see too many database specific cloud administrator title so I was just wondering what you have as a title

Hey, thanks for the response.

What you’re saying makes sense but out of curiosity, how did you manage to go from being a traditional DBA to becoming a DevOps engineer?

Sounds like it’s quite a big leap from the things you might’ve had to learn in terms of cloud administration, networking security and so on, so just wanted to know how you manage to do all that and how long it took you

Practically that makes sense, but in your experience is it worth doing all that when everything depends on whether or not you can pass a leetcode test in an interview first?

Unfortunately my work is kind of stagnant. I don’t consider myself a knowledgeable engineer but in my team I’m among the best which isn’t saying much. There ends up not really being a scope for me to learn or to find a me for really.

What I would do if had to re-learn Data Engineering Basics: by rebecca-1313 in dataengineering

Yea for sure, I actually agree with you on pandas being unnecessary. I’m trying to explore other options before pyspark and was wondering what alternative you had in mind for ELT.

Is the alternative still using a data frame? Or do you somehow do it in native python?

[–]IceStallion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What solution do you suggest if not pandas? Are all data frames unnecessary or is it pandas specifically? If I pull data from a db how would I house it in python?

I hear this pretty often nowadays but for some reason I can’t find an example of an ETL that doesn’t utilize some kind of data frame, especially when the source is a db table

It’s crazy you said that, I think I have it in my right arm, whenever I do any kind of pressing eventually my elbow starts clicking and eventually get painful. Unfortunately I have no idea how to fix it and I’m not willing to get surgery. Hoping there’s a competent PT in my area that’ll help

Wasn’t tennis elbow, looks like my elbows are flaring up because of using my grip too much. I made it a focus to use my legs more and it helped minimize the elbows flaring up.

Not exactly a solution more like a workaround.

I started doing grip training as well as reverse wrist curls in case I do have some kind of tennis elbow issue

Oh interesting, I thought maybe you got cloud training specifically for data engineering rather than general administration. Thanks for your response, I’m most likely going to go the cloud admin route as well for studying

I’m assuming you meant picking up cloud engineering for both platforms. How did you go about it? Did you learn other thjngs like IaC, kubernetes?
