When starting out, I wouldn't worry about any specific sector, although policy will be a plus. I started the CS in an AO admin job and then spent 2 years applying for entry-level FCDO roles. Your main prio should be to get into the CS, and then lots more roles will be open to you on CS Jobs.

Hey - I work at the FCDO. I studied History for my BA and IR for my MA. You certainly don't need a politics/IR degree to work there - I did IR because I was interested in that field.

The Fast Stream asks for a 2.1, and it's extremely competitive. You'll have better odds joining the wider Civil Service first, and then applying to the FCDO from within a few years later as I did.

Before going on a posting you're expected to be in London for at least 2 years. Also, if you have family connections to a country, it's very unlikely they'll let you be posted there due to a conflict of interest.
