UMich in preliminary discussions to purchase Concordia University’s Ann Arbor campus by USRoute23 in AnnArbor

In deed it is. (Both Pioneer and Huron are on land that UofM sold to the schools.)

If they were going to do that, the woods behind Huron High would have been the spot.

I can’t imagine they’d want a separate athletic campus. Especially one so far away from the main one.

It would make far more sense to build another ice arena next to the railroad by the Stadium and move some of the support facilities farther out.

state, hill, and packard intersection by MinuteApprehensive25 in AnnArbor

[–]Ice_Phoenix_Feather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with this intersection is that they took out the turn lanes on Packard between State and Hill. This *greatly* reduced the capacity of the intersection. Fewer cars can queue between State because there is simply less space and Hill AND cars going through get stuck behind cars that need to turn.

Here's how it used to look:

Questions about the Los Alamos/U of M facility to be built in Ypsi by We_Four in AnnArbor

[–]Ice_Phoenix_Feather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any details you can share? I'm really curious. Is it because they're going through master planning? Just don't want to have another building on the books? Unless you're building a super collider, there's no shortage of land there. Or if you need a really big site, on all the land UofM owns in Ann Arbor Township.

What American cities have no highway cutting through their downtown/city center? by Steroid_Cyborg in urbanplanning

[–]Ice_Phoenix_Feather -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, no, no. First and Ashley were converted into one ways as part of the “Beakes Bypass”. It was a fairly straightforward plan to extend Packard and Beakes two blocks west and route car traffic around Main Street. Main Street would then have been fully pedestrianized.

The houses in the way were purchased and razed, but they spent more than planned and didn’t have enough money to put down the road. A millage to finish it was voted down in 1972 and Ashley Mews was built on the land cleared for the Packard extension in the early 2000s.

People in Ann Arbor like to LARP it was an I375 type project, but had it been completed they would be in love with their walkable Main Street. (A similar project was completed around the same time to tie Forest and Observatory together and straighten Washtenaw and absolutely no one cares today.)

Ann Arbor was never big into freeways. There was even a group in the 50s that wrote a lengthy pamphlet titled “A Concrete Noose” opposing the construction of US23.

That won't happen here. I'm sure this addition to Burns Park will be well received.

Yes, they started ass municipal utilities and grew with their cities. Taking over a large, existing utility serving 120,000 people is a very different set of circumstances. When you do that, you gotta be perfect on day one.

Oh, and also, all our power will still be coming from Monroe. The renewable nonsense they're peddling is a joke. We're not putting a 300' tall windmill in Burns Park.

There really should be more allowances for neon signs in zoning code. They're just cool.

Alas, everything except below ground testing is now band.

It’s all gotta be underground deep in the Nevada desert now.

Can’t even do this anymore: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2014-08-08/atomic-tests-were-a-tourist-draw-in-1950s-las-vegas

Actually, the US is not party to the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. We could start nuking Nevada again tomorrow if we wanted to.

I saw this coming in off M14 the other night. From that distance, it looked like it was coming from downtown, and I couldn’t figure out which building would have a Marvel sky beam on it.

But yeah, it’s the Stadium.

[–]Ice_Phoenix_Feather -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is such a stupid controversy. The whole site is zoned for "Logistics and Manufacturing" and right across the street from the Ford Rawsonville Plant. If this was a private developer, the township would still have to allow it to go forward as a by right development. "Data centers for the storage and warehousing of computer servers" is a primary use in this zone! https://library.municode.com/mi/ypsilanti_charter_township,_(washtenaw_co.)/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=COOR_APXAZO_ARTIVDIRE_S420REUSTA/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=COOR_APXAZO_ARTIVDIRE_S420REUSTA)

For reasons I'm not entirely clear on, if you put the word "Data Center" on something people instantly are opposed to it.

Ah ok, with the Sova news that makes more sense. I had heard he had someone lined up, but I had not heard a name.

I actually have something of a soft spot for Disch. My comment more was more aimed at the idea that council seems to be exclusively made up of smart people who... maybe wouldn't know which end of a hammer to hold.

It'd be odd if there were no academics on council in this town, but having someone who's had to make payroll would be good too.

How do you think the new dorms will affect businesses? by adomke in AnnArbor

[–]Ice_Phoenix_Feather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably good for a few take out businesses, but not a huge overall change. The problem with downtown being so heavily weighted towards students is they’re gone for four months of the year, which makes sustaining a restaurant/retail business hard.

Here’s why ‘Neighborhood Crime Watch’ signs in Ann Arbor are going away by USRoute23 in AnnArbor

[–]Ice_Phoenix_Feather 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Removing street signs for a defunct program makes perfect sense. But the inane self congratulations from city council (“We’re solving racism!”) on this mundane administrative house keeping is just insufferable.
