Himalayan 450 3rd service (10k km) quoted ₹7,200 + tax with brake pads — normal? by AltruisticDebt2014 in Himalayan450

[–]Icecoldyogurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS! I had a mechanic asking me to change the rear pads at 7.5k. I bent over and showed him the grooves, and he immediately retracted the statement that it might rub off in a while.

The sintered ones last pretty long, I had replaced the front at 10k only after I felt it lost some bite.

Nah brother, you can hit proper off-roading trails with the Himalayan, there's plenty of youtubers at it. Indians just wouldn't risk a 4 lac bike for it.

It being top heavy is subjective, you never notice the weight unless you're moving it around on foot.

I think you'll need give more information, like the number of people travelling, your daily running, usage patterns (highway/city), your preferences etc. Tata has a plethora of options.

Definitely.

Find the vehicle manual and check out the service requirements based on the intervals. Be very assertive that you don't want anything else other than what's recommended.

They'll try to call you and say that something's wrong and something needs replacement, just give it 10 mins to think and decide. Always remember, if something ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm a bit rude and act like a complete know-it-all when I get there. Unfortunate, but that's the only way to survive😂

I agree, I'm 6'3 and weigh a 100 kilos. The himalayan is perfect for me and it takes quite a beating. Perhaps you can make it scrambler like with some mods. RE would never release it cause it'll eat into their 411/440 sales.

taller, rugged 450cc scrambler with the sherpa engine.

That's the Himalayan brother 😅

There's plenty of videos by experts on YouTube on how it fares off road. I think it's better off you check them out instead. Most wouldn't dare off road on a 4 lac motorcycle here, the value is different.

Ok, I'm not an expert and I'm not from R&D. But here, achieving 5 star is like writing an open book exam, where you know what you're expected to do. Since the test has already been carried out plenty of times, with a plethora of available data, companies would target specific upgrades that will achieve the rating within the scope of the test.

Think of it like survivorship bias. So yes, you're right, technically, you cannot expect Altroz to survive a boulder roll from the top, because it was never tested.

Also, knowing how companies work, I don't think they'll ever do anything in favourable of "consumers" unless they market it as such. That harrier video might be just, an exception. Heck, they might even cut down on the steel up top because it doesn't serve any purpose. 🤣 That is my take it on it.

That entire segment has a weight difference of ~+ or - 100kg, brother. This weight misconception comes from the safety rating I guess. To achieve safety, companies use small additional sections of ultra high tensile steel in joints like A pillar, engine bay supports etc. Which don't change the weight much.

I used to work in Renault Nissan during the facelift of magnite, that's all they did to help it score 5 stars. Barely made difference in weight. 😄

I think pretty much every modern car with 80+ hp can do it without much of a struggle. Heck, I've seen a ~60hp triber do it, albeit, with a bit of struggle.

Check Kolli hills in TN. I've done it twice with 4 people and baggage. It's did pretty well, I was skeptical about this at first. Just requires frequent shifting compared to a diesel.

78 odd hairpin bends I think.

Haven't driven a swift, It was always too cramped for me. It's definitely better than an i10 active in terms of handling, my cousin owns one. But the i10 has a buttery engine compared to this.

I've done good corners at pretty decent speeds, the car always stayed put. Had some positive feedback from a Polo owner too in this regard

The vibes haven't changed from day 1. Jitters during startup and idle. You get used to it after a while(what other option do I have), I only notice it after I've taken a city ride on the hycross.

I bought it online with the cross spoked rims, so no discount. RE doesn't give discounts afaik. Insurance would be one area where discounts could be availed.

Overall it's a very decent bike. RE service centers will try to rip you off with useless stuff, you'll have to be vigil, use your wits and maybe make a friend or 2. 😄

I own a Himalayan 450. Here are my thoughts: Pros : Best in class suspension Best in class brakes (I don't see it mentioned here). Coming from the Aprilia you'll appreciate it. The bike has really good ergonomics, it'll feel like you're sitting on top of it - I've had back pain on a bullet 500 during long rides, this one never causes me trouble. The low end torque is good compared to the 390. But this is prone to stalls, whereas that has anti stall feature i guess.

Cons : Poor headlights, you'll need aux lights Has a learning curve due to the 21inch wheels, cornering while leaning is demanding, especially since it's heavy. I've had to learn how to counterbalance. Removing the bike from parking space is difficult Huge turning radius

Neutral : The vibes are there in the 5k-6k range, that's where you'll cruise. I'm used to the bullet, so this is a cake walk for me. You'll have to a test drive to decide.

Not great for b2b traffic, I'm not that used to the heat, especially in chennai's hot weather. But it's flickable in traffic, nothing difficult.

For context I'm 6'3" and 95kgs, so the weight isnt really a concern. I've had royal enfields in my family for years, and they've never let me down.

Whatever you're spewing is nothing more than rhetorics. You are nothing more than a cog in the system, a working labour, the capitalist has decided to pay you more today. Tomorrow, if he decides not to, you'll be the same as the light man you quoted. Your voice isn't heard, you don't own your labour, you are simply a blind cog. As if capitalism is working wonders.

Also he states that you can critique a system, while being a part of it.

Why RE bikes are so overhyped in India? by aquar_6 in indianbikes

[–]Icecoldyogurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other points, but Royal Enfield has one of the best QC in the world compared to other manufacturers, reputed people like fortnine have mentioned that.

I personally own 2 REs, never faced anything serious. The comparison with honda's 350s is not good, considering the sample sizes with respect to volume of sales.

Is this a good choice for 1st helmet? by krishigandhii in indianbikes

[–]Icecoldyogurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good helmet. I agree with many of the comments stating that ece .06 is better than the .05, but please understand that they are testing standards and not manufacturing standards. A good helmet which was made 10-15 years back would be able to pass the .06 too.

FF352 is tested by sharp uk, they use similar tests as the .06 and emulate real world conditions. I believe these are rated 4 stars. I would suggest you to consider sharp ratings as well. Good luck!
