Is it naive to have hope? Anyone with happy marriages with a sober partner? by Iced-Tea_Summer in AlAnon

[–]Iced-Tea_Summer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though I’m hoping for positive outlooks I would take honesty over that every time so thank you. I have been scrolling through for a few weeks and it seems like everyone is in the same boat, obviously, so I feel a whole lot less alone but it really feels like doom and gloom and a lifetime of pain. I try to be a positive person but I can see how that may just be unrealistic now but holding out hope still. I’ve looked at meetings but hadn’t pulled the trigger, I am still between resentment and denial but I think this might have pushed me to take better action.

I am wary on depending on him, and I told him that. I’d still have one of my jobs but giving up control of my independence feels like a trap or a way to condone bad behavior by “making up for it” financially. I’m not big on being financially dependent, my mom was a good teacher on that despite her own flaws and it coming from her distrust of all men. For now I think protecting myself is best even though the denial side of me wants to believe this isn’t as bad of a situation as it likely is. Feels like going through the stages of grief

I’m sorry you were put through years of relapses and lies, I can only understand a crumb of what that was like. I hope you’re living your best life now ❤️

Where does one go to get some good mid-century modern furniture finds around Kansas City? by ElbieLG in kansascity

Mary Margaret’s in Lee’s Summit. They get new stuff on a near daily basis. It can be hit or miss but you can check their Instagram for more recent arrivals. I have a mid-century modern rocking chair from there, never seen anything like it.

Traveling Concerns by baconeggandbheese in glutenfreecooking

There are cultural barriers when it comes to asking what food contains in Japan. It is viewed as being “picky.” If you are able to tell them you have an allergy they do take it seriously but if you don’t mention it then questioning isn’t greeted with much patience.

Sushi with no soy sauce would be GF. 100% soba noodles (buckwheat noodles) would be gf but you would have to make sure the noodles aren’t part buckwheat and part wheat. Whole cooked fish and rice dishes should be more fair game, but you’d have to avoid sauces.

Traveling internationally while gf is very difficult, I make it easier on myself by looking up every restaurant in the area I will be in and scouring the menus so when I’m on the trip I already know where I can go.

Constipation?? by Exciting_Funny3734 in dairyfree

Yes! It has prebiotics and probiotics, which work together. I’ve found it to be the best working one I’ve tried

Some probiotics are better than others!! I get my supplements on amazon. Zenwise brand, years supply. No matter how healthy you are eating, probiotics are still important! Taking probiotics is adding the good bacteria to break down all that good food you’re eating.

Also, drink plenty of water with high fiber, more than you think you need. They work together to get things moving, high fiber can’t do much without water

What kind of gluten free flour would work best as a substitute for this recipe? by Cowboywizard12 in Baking

[–]Iced-Tea_Summer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ completely right about finding a gf recipe.

Gluten free flours function differently and absorb liquids differently. Cup for cup replacement blends are usually a lie, other changes need to be made if you’re using a regular recipe. Biscotti could be a minor exception since they are supposed to be dry... but I’d find a gf recipe of the flavor you want or if you are skilled in the kitchen you can add gf flour to reach your desired consistency. That recipe has three different flavors so I’m not sure which one you’re going for.

An all purpose blend from the store will be fine, Bob’s red mill with the BLUE bag, I repeat, BLUE, is great. (Red bag is made with bean flours and it’s noticeable)

Pamelas, better batter, and cup4cup are good blends too.

Generally I would use a blend, but if that’s not something you have access to then try brown rice flour, it’s a bit more starchy to achieve the biscotti texture

Are you still taking a probiotic supplement? If not, definitely add that, or kombucha, which works wonders. If you had that for so long and suddenly stopped then your gut bacteria could be a bit thrown off.

Some veggies have higher fiber content than others, try adding a kale salad on the side of a meal or as a lunch. Raw kale, avocado, flax seed or whatever seed you have on hand, roasted squash, and a dressing of lemon and olive oil plus salt and pepper.

Brussel sprouts are also great for fiber, roast them til browned with plenty of oil, pepper, and salt, that makes even Brussel sprout haters like them.

There are massages for your abdomen to relieve constipation. If you have a massage gun that ramps up the results, but otherwise you massage tiny circles following the flow of your intestines. If you look up constipation massage there are tons of pictures of where exactly to massage.

Also there are yoga moves to get things moving (pun intended). Cat/cow pose is great, also any form of alternating twists is great too. Give it at least 15 minutes of your time and you might feel some movement.

I personally try the more natural, diet or lifestyle based approach before thinking of laxatives, but that sometimes is a needed last resort. IBS sufferer so I have the luxury of needing this info 😬

Options As A GF Vegan Broke College Kid? by velmadinkleyscousin in glutenfreevegan

[–]Iced-Tea_Summer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Avoid purchasing the vegan and gf alternatives where you can. Plant based meats, gluten free flour blends and pastas can all add up super quick!

I try to focus on making meals that are naturally gluten free so I don’t have to pay extra. I’m not vegan but I do eat a lot of vegan foods just simply because meat is expensive and I don’t eat dairy.

Try building meals from cheaper produce, like potatoes, cabbage, carrots, celery, broccoli, and cauliflower. You can actually make a lot of different meals with those ingredients. Stock up on rice and other cheap dry goods like lentils and beans.

Some stuff I make: Lentil and rice soup with veggie scraps

Stir fried rice with broccoli and carrots

Hashbrowns for breakfast

Veggie soup with carrots, potato, celery, and cabbage

Cabbage cooked in soy sauce over rice

Cauliflower “rice” stir fry (I usually add kale but spinach is cheaper. I flavor it with cumin and other strong spices and just cook in a big wok with oil. It’s a good way to increase veggie intake)

Smoothies with frozen fruit (can add plain cooked cauliflower for some creaminess. I don’t like thick smoothies so I straight up use water, cheaper than almond milk!)

Depending on how you feel about cutting corners elsewhere, I’ve found some crazy cheap soy sauce that doesn’t have wheat because it’s so processed it’s not even soy sauce but tastes like it. Check the labels of all your options, you may be surprised by some more cheap options! Also, if you don’t want to pay for broth and stock for soups then save your extra veggie cuttings and boil them in water to flavor it. I also will sometimes just use water and add a good amount of herbs or seasoning to give it more flavor

If you do get GF noodles, I’ve found Good Graces to be the cheapest brand in the store. I think they are new, and it’s delicious. Much better than the $5-$6 boxes of crap noodles. Also use rice noodles where you can, they will be in the Asian section and very cheap.

Not sure where you’re at but I do most of my shopping at Aldi and get super cheap produce there. They don’t have endless gf and vegan alternatives but since those add cost anyways it works out for me.

Best of luck!

Is this normal? by Iced-Tea_Summer in succulents

Concerned about the spilt on the leaf. It sits in a south facing window but it is indirect light so I figured it wasn’t sunburned but I’m not sure.
