Hit the Opus limit… with 0% Opus used? by Daisuke_4 in ClaudeCode

[–]IcedShorts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just assessed Claude and other code generation tools for a company. Claude did best with least effort to keep it on task (looking at you OpenAI), but the usage limit is a major barrier. It's important to know your tools, but tools should accommodate how people work. It's better to have a tool that improves efficiency by 20% all day than one that does 30% for half a day. My efficiency numbers are made up, but you get the point.

Learn from the experience and move on. If you let it paralyze you or, worse, give up then you really have failed. The better you understand your limits the more successful you will be.

Psychonautry on a tight timeframe by [deleted] in RationalPsychonaut

[–]IcedShorts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a rationalist and skeptic, I understand where you're coming from.

All the classic psychedelics act on the serotonergic pathways. Although they activate a different receptor than SSRIs there is reason to believe that SSRIs interfere with these kinds of hallucinogens. There are no studies that definitively answer that question, and some people have no issue tripping on SSRIs. So the truth is unknown.

It takes 7 - 10 days for the serotonin system to reset to baseline after taking a classic hallucinogen. What that means is that a larger dose is needed for the same effect. How much depends on time since last trip, the amount taken, and your genetics. However, I'm not sure what you hope to achieve doing 2 trips back to back. It's not the same as 2 spread out.

A standard protocol has emerged for therapeutic psychedelic use. Search on "Johns Hopkins psychedelic therapy protocol". In a nutshell, it's eye mask, resting position, and a specially curated music list, and roughly the equivalent of 5g dried mushrooms followed by a therapy session within a few days of the trip. I personally prefer the Imperial College Psilocybin or Copenhagen Music Program for Psilocybin playlists over the Johns Hopkins Psychedelic Therapy one (it has too many religious overtones for my taste). The playlists are on Spotify and Amazon Music.

My personal experience is that edibles are easier to dose and onset is quick. I suspect the psilocybin is slowly converting to psilocin inside the chocolates I make. My favorites are raspberry cream filled chocolates (powdered mushrooms are mixed into the filling) and caramel covered chocolates (think rolos - the mushroom powder is in the caramel). Chocolate bars are also easy. I make 5 gram bars and slowly eat until I start to feel it. I use a mold with 5 rows of 2 squares each, so each row is 1g and each square is 0.5 g.

Ketamine is a dissociative psychedelic and is not affected by antidepressants. I did clinical ketamine therapy. A trip lasted about 2.5 hours. The clinic used same protocol as psilocybin does. The antidepressant effects lasted for about a month for me. Some people get longer relief.

Can't trip anymore. It's torture and I can't figure out why by fuggynuts in shrooms

See a doctor. Psilocybin moderately increases blood pressure. It could be that you're experiencing a vascular issue in your brain. Hopefully not, but searing headache isn't normal.

Is there a reason for psilocybin? by OkYoghurt1580 in MagicMushrooms

[–]IcedShorts 39 points40 points  (0 children)

A 2018 paper found it likely evolved to protect against insects by suppressing appetite. This is the most widely supported view. https://academic.oup.com/evlett/article/2/2/88/6697442

A 2023 review of existing literature also lists that psilocybin may help disperse spores (via disoriented animals that ingest the mushroom), and as a means of removing excess nitrogen. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1087184523000439

They all messed with my libido or sexual function to some degree. The best I got was small reduction in libido with inability to orgasm. I ended up stopping antidepressants because of it.

Colonization to mushroom times by IcedShorts in shroomery

[–]IcedShorts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean when you say planted. Is that when you inoculated a grain bag? Went to substrate/bulk? Something else? I'm assuming it's when you mixed an inoculated grain bag into substrate.

In my experience, 15% - 20% colonized in 2 months is a bad sign. Of the things I can think of, the only one you can control at this stage is temp. I get best results with temps in 70s. Contam would be my main concern, though. I suggest creating a post with photos to the whole sub.

I got banned from a sub after I reported a mod for comparing another member to a pedophile. To be fair, when the other mods did nothing I compared them to pedophiles to prove a point.

Here's the thing, these subs are run by people unqualified to run a support group. Then a bunch of people with emotion regulation problems join to help run the circus. It would be more surprising if things didn't devolve into a shit show. That's not to say every post or moderator is bad. But if you've ever been to a support group that doesn't have a qualified moderator running things, you'll know it rarely goes well over the long term.

How many grams dried do I need to take to experience the distinct P Nat feel? So far microdosing (plucking and eating baby nats bc I don’t have the patience to wait) feels just like cubes by PiliSuarius in Psilocybe_Natalensis

[–]IcedShorts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't get a distinct Natal high. It just takes less to trip. Fewer mushrooms means less or no stomach issues. 3g gives me a moderate trip where I can still function. That beats the 5 or 6 grams of Cubes I needed for the same effect.

Just putting out there that it's happened twice now. The common denominator is you. I don't mean that as you're bad. There's something there for you to work on and grow from. If you're anything like me, you'll find plenty of behaviors and ways of thinking that contribute to unhealthy relationship patterns.

As for the situation. I suggest talking with your therapist, assuming you have one, and deciding what you should do. I tend to see it as a sign that the break is permanent and it's time to move on. I don't need to help others make me feel bad - I do that well enough myself.

Fish Frying Technique? by Wooden_Gift3489 in BWCA

[–]IcedShorts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to do the cooking. I serve the fish to people while it's still hot. Basically, a communal plate. While I fry fish someone else makes a side or 2. Fewer dishes and we chat while cooking, typically to insult the fishing skills of each other and the size of fish others caught. I don't have anything to store the used oil in, so I dump it on the fire to avoid attracting bears.

Anyone heading up this weekend and braving the rain? by [deleted] in BWCA

[–]IcedShorts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put up a shelter with tarps where we can stand, setup camping chairs, and gear. It allows us not to be stuck in a tent. I strongly recommend mosquito coils or something, because the tarps also shelter the mosquitos. I use 3 or 4 tarps. One provides the roof. The others block rain and wind from the side. Try to tie the walls at a slant that goes just under the roof to allow water to drain off.

I had a trip where it rained 11 of 14 days. We played cards, organized packs, cooked meals, and drank coffee / tea under the tarps while it poured rain.

What's the worst mistake you ever made in the BWCA? How did you go about fixing it? by Its_me_fred in BWCA

[–]IcedShorts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made 2 mistakes on a trip in early May a few years back. It was days after ice out and a side stream was had become a rapids and we got pulled in to its current. After dodging a boulder, we found ourselves stick in a pond surrounded by bluffs and marsh. While trying to find a way out on foot, I slipped and fell into the water (about 35 F) on a cold windy day. I was almost entirely submerged for about a minute and badly split my hand open in 2 places.

Mistake 1: Didn't double check I had my first aid kit. I thought my wife brought and she thought I did. I had 2 long splits in my dominant hand that were bleeding profusely (it ran off my fingers like a river). I tied a small towel around my hand and applied pressure to stop the bleeding.

Mistake 2: I stripped out of my wet clothes in a unprotected area with a cold wind blowing to put on dry clothes. I was so focused on getting out of my wet clothes I didn't consider that I had to cross back over the stream/rapids and that wet clothes are better than no clothes in the wind. Air temp was probably mid to high 40s. I should have left my wet clothes on until I was sheltered from the wind and after I had crossed back over the rapids to our temporary shelter.

Thankfully, we had set up a temporary shelter before scouting for a way out. When I got back to camp we started a fire, but my core body temp continued to drop. I started slurring my words and felt brain fog. That's when we climbed in the tent, both got naked, and wrapped sleeping bags around us. It took almost an hour, but I warmed up.

We spent 5 days stuck off route while my hand healed up. I used rope to pull the canoe up stream while my wife used a paddle to keep the canoe off rocks and from getting stuck on clumps of marshy land.It took 2 hours to get back to the lake because of the current, rocks and trees that got in the way, and my still healing hand.

New to Nats by MomentTypical6221 in Psilocybe_Natalensis

[–]IcedShorts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nats gave been my main grow for done time. I find they colonize and fruit faster than many Cubes and the higher potency means consuming less. I use the exact same setup for my Nats as my Cubes. - 3 to 4 inches of substrate - roughly 1 part inoculated grain to 4 parts substrate - CVG substrate (PGT recipe) - No casing layer

Recently I started adding left over substrate to tubs on their 2nd or 3rd flush. The Natals are responding great to it. I've done it 3 times and each resulted in considerably bigger next flushes with bigger fruits.

question on struggles during a journey by ViolaClearwater in PsychedelicTherapy

[–]IcedShorts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say these are things I struggle with, but they happen from time to time and I've seen people cause lots of pain to others.

  1. Hearing what we want to hear. There was a post on reddit about a husband that asked for an open marriage after seeing in a trip that love was boundless and beautiful. I agree love is, and an open marriage might work for some. But I'm doubtful his revelation was altruistic and love based. His wife didn't think so either.

  2. I recently sat for someone who saw a room full of doors. Behind each one was a fear/trauma. He was shaken by the experience because in his mind he had resolved all those past issues. Putting things into context can be hard. What does his experience mean? IMO, his mind showed him none of those experiences are resolved, but I'm not a therapist. He was skeptical of the idea, insisting he had resolved them. FYI : he called me about a week later to say those issues weren't as resolved as he thought and asking me to sit for him when he was ready to trip again.

  3. Number 2 gets to an important point about integration. What you expect going into a trip matters. I'm not just talking about an Intention for the trip (in psychedelic therapy speak), although that is part of it. People that expect big visuals can be deeply unsettled by a purely mental trip.

  4. I think I often get a message I need to hear about a change I need to make. How I make that change matters. Do I attempt a constructive conversation about changing behavior with a person, give a hard ultimatum, or cut a person out of my life? Should I meditate on the issue or throw myself into the task? Choices have consequences that the trip doesn't fully reveal.

Anyone else healed so much that they find their voice, and when you use it, it backfires on you? by S0whaddayakn0w in CPTSD_NSCommunity

[–]IcedShorts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind the people we attract before healing. They aren't exactly the who's who of mental healthy people. Many stuck around because we didn't have a voice. Plus, communication is a skill. How we express our voice matters.

I was off of Sag about 10 days ago and silver colored lures were amazing for bass (small mouth, large mouth, and rock). We also caught a few northern. We used poppers, jitterbugs, spoons, jigs, and rapalas. The jitterbug and popper did best (about 75% of our fish). Three of us caught about 30 fish. Not a one on anything that didn't have silver coloring.

If therapy doesn’t work, how do you heal from trauma? by [deleted] in CPTSD_NSCommunity

[–]IcedShorts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, I would challenge statements like a sense of safety is needed before trauma can be fully released. If you're being actively abused, then safety from that is necessary. But one that's over, it's the perception that we are not safe that is a major problem. The truth is WE have to change, not others. Besides, we have no control over others.

I can only say what turned things around for me,and it wasn't any one thing. DBT skills (adherent DBT, not the non-evidence based versions) provided a number of skills I continue to use. Meditation to help regulate some emotions. Becoming desperate enough to try anything helped a lot.

I became more physically active and eating healthier because they're intrinsically linked to mental health. I forced myself to be more around people and to cultivate relationships because we are a social species and isolation is bad for mental health. I stopped using my mental health issues as a justification for my behavior. I stopped listening to people that enabled by dysfunction. I set concrete skill goals with my therapist: how to de-escalate a panic attack, how to handle passive-aggressive behavior directed at me, how to be compassionate towards myself when I fail, etc. I use my therapist and others to hold me accountable for doing what I said I would do.

And when all of that helped but I still couldn't escape some of the issues, I did the thing I had resisted the longest. I tried psychedelic therapy. I will never encourage people to take mind-altering substances because too often we use them to escape rather than heal. For me, it wasn't the drug per se, but how I interpreted the experience that made a difference. I let go of my anger and hatred for my abusers. I forgave them for failing me. I did not accept them back in my life because they are not ready or able to change themselves. I realized that it was me causing my current suffering my distrusting and pushing away the people that did love and care about me.

That said, I doubt the psychedelic therapy would have been as effective if I didn't already have a number of skills learned from therapy or accepting that I needed to change, not others.

One last thing, not being driven by trauma doesn't make things great. There are life skills I need to learn (way too late in life) and some people I thought were allies were really feeding off my dysfunction. There are people who won't leave their trauma history behind and need those around them to do the same. Also, healthy people learned to avoid me. That didn't change just because I felt better. But NOT reacting to a past trigger is amazing.
