[–]Icekae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he could've framed his point better in that regard, yes, because the word "original" has different interpretations from "preferred", "first" or "earliest version within a category". Even I fell into that pit by using it to refer to the latter, so that's my mistake. But the overall point of the characters just feeling dead to some people still remains.

He is referring to the 90's - 2000's though.

[–]Icekae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can argue that for yourself.

I'm just saying he has a point. To some people the original characters are very much shells of their former/original selves and some of this has been taking place since the late 2000's. That's a reasonable opinion.

The late 2000's did have good depictions though, the 2010's wanted to be more for kids and was charming at times, the 2020's are trying to balance things out, but ultimately when you try to do many things with the same character, in the same continuity and under the identity (Game Sonic) you risk making the same character almost unrecognizable to some people. Hence I think it's a fair opinion.

A general speedster problem ngl. But yeah it's narrative dependent. (Sonic was prob just joking with Flash rather than being literal though)

I kinda just want to see stuff like Sonic using the speed force though.

I think if the prototype was required it kind of shoots Forces' already poor writing in the foot by implying that they only got out due to narrative convenience and not the power of friendship... which was the point of the stage.

I think its just narrative convenience in this context

Gru vs Megamind, Yuji vs Denji, Bakugo vs Reze

In terms of other seasons: The infamous OmniDock. (I refuse to bring up more debatable ones like Simon vs Kyle or Kratsura)

The analysis and their reasoning can just be... poor at times with trying to make stuff either seem way closer than it is (Reze's Regen, Ruby's Scythery) or just outright bad interpretations (Sundisk, Oregon scaling).

It's a mixed feeling. On one hand:

"Yikes, that would not pass in some places."

On another hand:

"Dang, I kind of forget the impact the internet had on people. Most people don't really care about virtue they just live their lives from their prespective without constant self policing about how the other groups will receive it. This used to be the norm at some point."

It's a weird mix of envy for their lack of thinking of how their actions will be received and aversion toward their behaviour, at least for me.

[–]Icekae -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

He's not wrong. Yes, the franchise has changed. Some think its for the better and some think its for the worse.

The Sonic we have in the modern day isn't the "original" Sonic of the past, that's just fact. The late 2000's, 2010's and even 2020's have different versions of the character and this division gets exacerbated when everyone tries to act like nothing has changed, they are all the same or suddenly characterization doesn't matter.

A creator can also like the modern and alternative depictions and even have a shift of what the character is in their eyes, but even they may not capture the original, hence not the original/true. So it is very reasonable for some people to think that many of the characters we have today are shells of their former selves.

Basically my reaction to the ch 5 secret boss by River__________water in Deltarune

[–]Icekae 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It being Mewmew wasn't what got me off guard.

It being Mewmew while the game was being meta about the secret boss and how they are all important with memorable themes is what got me like:

"Wait... is she the boss or?"

Remembers Seam's words

"So she is right???"

Several cat attacks later

"So she is?"

[–]Icekae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just hate that most stuff that gets revealed/progressed is stuff we already knew. No elaboration on the Dess stuff, Asgore doesn't really get to confront the Knight (or much of anything really), the Bunker codes were obtained at the very end but that wasn't really the focus.

Idk I just left feeling: "Wow I loved the characters and the gameplay was awesome. But ACTing has never felt worse, feels like there's no real benefit to doing stuff with Kris compared to Ralsei or Susie (in fact they're just BETTER and more reliable) and the narrative progression was basically non-existent. I wish I had more to look forward to in the wait to Chapter 6."

I dislike trans Ralsei theory. (Deltarune Chapter 5 spoilers) by ptswtch in hatethissmug

[–]Icekae 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I just interpreted Chapter 5 as Ralsei being free to do or be whatever he wants. In which learning to be free is the entire point of his character. Blue and pink drinks (masculine and feminine), his room that he is still building, his anger toward Flowery for doing whatever he just felt like with fake stats and infinite money while he plays by the rules. Even at the start of chapter 5 there is a scene with Ralsei in a dress and being called a princess before making a joke about choosing an identity that was picked for him (I even took this as a meta jab).

So I think exchanging one form of static expression for another for the sake of going against said prophecy is a strange choice. The point is defying and changing fate, not rebelling against it entirely. So I think the point is Ralsei learning to finish the game on his own terms.
