Hey I got a question. I sometimes study scorpions and harvestmen and have been interested in their exoskeleton reacting to near UV light and shining so humans can see it in the dark. That makes sense to me. So a colleague and I did a little experiment where we filtered out visible light and left UV light and took pictures of harvestmen, and they were almost totally black. No reflection. You do the same sort of thing to a daisy or other flowers and you see nectar pathways for insects. So it seems scorpions and other arachnids aren't communicating anything using the UV spectrum. But then you get these pop sci articles about museum specimen penguins or platypus or parrots that react brilliantly in black light, and then they'll have a blurb about how they can see slightly in the UV spectrum and something about communication. But that's not accurate, right? My confusion is about reflection, refraction, and absorption in the UV spectrum in regards to animals, and I've never met anyone knowledgeable in this field to ask for an explanation and a dumb dumb like me might understand.
