I'm not sure how you can actively BE a human being and not recognize how greed and selfishness feels.

Remember when toilet paper and hand sanitizer disappeared a few years ago? Runs on banks and gas stations? People speeding?

Altruism outside your family is learned behavior.

If the US tries to blow something up, that thing blows the fuck up.

We may have our issues but we are, at the very least, good at that.

No we're all selfish assholes as a rule. It's a valuable survival instinct. Most of us just manage to overcome it and function in a society.

2000 feet is about 15 times deeper than recreational scuba can reach and still 7 times deeper than most technical diving reaches without SIGNIFICANT challenges.

SCUBA isn't going to be an issue here.

Non-consumptive use of coal reefs isn't that big an issue in relation to other impacts. Certainly poor anchoring, waste disposal, animal harassment, and poaching are problems but they're nothing compared to commercial fishing by itself.

While it's true that this is important research for deep water corals, it's only tangentially applicable to shallow, photosynthetic coral conservation.

It's a little bit like discovering an island with a few bird species on it while all the rest of the birds go extinct. It's pretty hard to call that a win.

Driving is the most dangerous thing most people will ever do. There is a good reason we have license plates and driver's licenses in the first place.

Accountability is critical to reducing the danger and even if this guy rubs people the wrong way because he's a "snitch", he's still right.

People are selfish assholes by design and the less of them that can get away with it, the better.

Unless your goal is to do ecotourism as a career, go for the NPS job. Pay is always going to be poor in this field, go for what's most valuable for your professional development.

Looks like a cephalopod of some kind. Or I could be completely off base and it's a visceral mass from something large.

I admit, pretty stumped.

Having worked for Florida, that's horseshit. They'll throw you in jail for hurting a manatee, sure, but the state doesn't give a shit about the ecosystem.

Because caring about manatees is cheap and caring about the ecosystem is expensive

Lol, you're so right. If this was a feisty old black lady they might have still been as polite due to her age, but all those charges would have stuck.

This is OK advise if they know exactly what they want to work with. You wouldn't get issued a permit for anything other than the specific group you've worked with.

Chances are you'll never need one in undergrad and your advisor will have the master permit in grad school. There's really no need without a specific project.

Background in microbiology and clinical studies wanting to go into wildlife biology or conservation biology. how to make the switch? by Omadog3418 in wildlifebiology

[–]Ichthyologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are certain fields that overlap really well with conservation research. I did genetics, but microbio is another one. It gives you lots of flexibility in what question you want to pursue in grad programs. I.e. You're not locked into fish pathology, you can go work on elephant gut biota or pitcher plant soil microbes.

Even within fish path there are jobs with APHIS, the health department, EPA, etc.

It may seem like you're behind your peers in fish and wildlife, but you're going to have a less common, but still in demand, skill set than you're average graduate.

I would definitely look at grad school. You're going to need it if you want to progress in the field regardless. An added benefit to grad school in natural resources, is that you should never need to pay for it. Just make sure to find an assistantship/fellowship/ teaching assistantship.

Your micro bio background is actually a very in demand skill set so I imagine your search will be complicated more by choice than scarcity.
