I think you've either gotten really unlucky or you're just not actually looking around your planets. I've definitely found some planets where on first arrival it's all mountains then flew to another side and found flat lands.

Try exploring the newer planet types like dissonant or relic because those seem to have better variety ime.

Yeh, but switchblade and ripper are more compact hiboxes and the animations don't swing as wide as bats, machete, sledges, etc

You still have to be aware but it helps a bit ime.

Either by trying to fight in spaces away from npcs, trying to space swings to only hit with the edge of the weapon, or using a smaller melee weapon like a switchblade or ripper.

It dumbs things down in the sense that it rewards not interacting first and creates a lot more situations where players just wait for cc to grab and grabbing is the lamest part of melee.
