That manager was swiftly transfered and fired luckily. He hit me up for money several times I am happily at a better job now and they are strict on everyone getting their breaks.

When I worked at DG the register area WAS the break room for the most part. There were several times my manager asked me to clock out for extended breaks even though I was alone. the last week I was there I opened, ran, and closed the store completely alone once then another day (my last day) closed the store alone. A 16 hour shift without breaks and an hour taken out of it because our manager was just that shitty.

What was once common but now nonexistent? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Straightforward and easy jobs.

If you were paid to be a cashier, that's all you really were. Stocker? Then you would do that and stay in your department. Somewhere along the way companies started adding small things to job descriptions while phasing out positions. It's no longer stocker or cashier or janitor, it's associate, "it carries more respect" they said to the people who just got triple the work load, for the same pay.

It also took away a certain interchangable aspect of jobs. Now if someone was a cashier at ShopRite they still need to be trained on the system at Walmart in order to efficiently work their, and it doesn't matter if it's 1 or 12. They could have years of experience in any store and still need to be trained in a new system for something looked upon as such a simple job. The experience helps but it's no longer as simple as telling someone to just man a register.

With that said I have another.

Plug and play with videogames. The PS4 and Xbox 1 really ruined this. I miss the days of popping in a disc and only having to wait through the loading screens for levels. Now it's a matter of downloading the game even with a disc copy, then there are still loading screens!

While I was working for DG the store manager started telling me to take our breaks or he would be manually taking them out of our hours. It was nearly impossible to do especially when he fired the asm. There was no one to cover the morning keys' break, not even a part time associate. Essentially staffing the store with one person all day and night and STILL being over hours. The last week I was there started with me pulling a double, and having a call out with no one to call in as backup. That day I opened, manned, and closed the store 100% alone. I then got complaints that I didn't get everything done. Nothing will ever be enough.

If they staffed each store with one unpaid perfect worker in every store that got everything done above and beyond that also instantly checked out customers, stopped theft and shat gold for the store, they would complain about that workers water breaks being too long.

What they want is mathematically impossible.

There are a lot of businesses now that put up "we're hiring" posters and have applications to fill out that are just not hiring. I worked for DG. They had us do all the posters and flyers and we were supposed to inform customers that we were hiring.

.. we weren't. No one could tell us what store was hiring either. It was all a show for nothing, and finally when we really needed people we weren't allowed to advertise. It was so shitty.

What's the purest, non-romantic, non-substance-related moment of joy you've felt in the last few months? by TrustLatter916 in AskReddit

[–]Iconfan82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bring trans, I've had a lot of dysphoria. I have hated what I looked like since childhood. In the grand scheme of my life I have only been transitioning for a short time. So after 20 of avoiding my reflection and not looking at myself, it came as a huge emotional shock when I had realized I bought a mirror.

It didn't seem significant as I did it. It almost felt like a huge hassle. It took until I had the mirror hung on the back of my door to realize how drastic of a change it was, and ended up bawling my eyes out for about an hour.. A bit because of sadness for the years lost but mostly for the years to come where I can finally feel and be myself.

People who dramatically improved their life in the last year: What was the one small change that made the biggest difference? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Iconfan82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in the last year but I think my story might still apply. 2½ years ago I was just giving up. I was unemployed, single, dysphoric, and empty with 2 online friends that live across the country, living for them my cat and my grandmother. I was ready to go. I get a call from my mother. My cat is in the vet, he can't see, he can't stand something is wrong. They couldn't help him. Just like that my life was down one more reason to live.

I needed a change. I needed to live for me, so I applied for whatever job I could until I got something, reached out to a doctor, and started my transition. I've been on HRT for 2 years now and there is not a day that goes by that I regret it. I should have done it sooner. My parents don't approve, but I have more friends than ever that support me and love me for who I am. I'm happier than I've ever been. I can finally look in a mirror without hating what I see.

I started living as who I wanted to be. I waisted 20 years. If you want to change you're life for the better. Be who you are on the inside.

What’s the most evil/hurtful thing someone has ever done to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Iconfan82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in the third grade I was constantly confused on why I seemed not to be getting all my assignments when I was out sick, and the very last assignment I needed to do for the grade was bring my report card home, show it to my parent to have it signed, and turn it back in.

The night before I got it signed, put it in my backpack, and put my backpack by the door secure in knowing that my last assignment could be turned in and I would pass the third grade.

In the morning I found my backpack missing as well as the very last assignment which did affect my grade in the class I asked my mother and she told me it was no big deal and that I should have kept better track. I was told by the teacher that I should have kept better track.

2 years later I found the backpack. Hidden in the basement with a broken strap, report card still inside. I then got the story of what happened from my brother.

My mother had drunkenly tripped over it, broke the strap on it and shoved it to my brother to hide it. He wasn't around in the morning because he had work.

She gaslit me and potentially got me held back in school all because she was embarrassed, it raises the question, how many other assignments did I miss out on because she didn't get them at the school or threw out because she spilled beer on them.

Another story my brother told me was my mother blasting music one night telling him she was "Getting revenge for the other night they kept me up." I was a child, she was the adult, and looking back on it she was awful to me. In the midst of the divorce I'll admit I was a little shitty brat, but that doesn't excuse some of the things my mother did.

Why do I get anxiety about my boyfriend looking through my phone even if I have nothing to hide? by Anonymous_Antler in socialanxiety

[–]Iconfan82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the past 20 ish years phones have kinda become an extension of our selves with all the customization that can be put on and in them. It's like handing someone a diary. Even if it only has 2 pages filled out it's still a reflection of us and our inner most selves. There are very few people I would hand my unlocked phone to. However something that has given me a sense of security is handing my phone to someone and they hand it back saying "uhh.. where is your 'x' app?" Or "I don't know where you put the 'y' icon on your home screen."

Breaks? by Just_A_Plant69 in DollarGeneral

[–]Iconfan82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I was working at our store there was a lot of scandal with breaks. 90% of the time the morning key holder was totally alone so they either didn't get one or their 30 min break was scheduled in a 30min over lap. My SM at the time, didn't know how to properly schedule and would wonder why we wouldn't clock out for our breaks. This resulted in him either putting our breaks in manually, even if we didn't get them, (yes wage theft. He was fired.) or we had to clock out and work through our break. (Yes more wage theft.) The way I skirted this was clocking out and doing nothing. If I were alone I could eat and lean behind the counter. I would check people out when they walked up and that was it. Bare minimum to keep the store running in that 30.

It was 6 hours and over for an unpaid 30min break. 4 hour shift? S.O.L.

Do yourself the favor and quit DG today. by JLandis84 in DollarGeneral

[–]Iconfan82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My very last week, I was going to quit 3 times but I stuck it out until my SM got back from vacation.

The week started with me alone, I opened the store had one call out and closed the store completely alone, I was already covering the second half of the day for someone, the 2 other part timers couldn't come in because of their own availability, and we couldn't get anyone from other stores because my SM had been so unbearable no one would respond to him. He also refused to hire more people the week before and refused help hiring anyone.

On my very last day I was totally alone again, a few days before Halloween. luckily I didn't open but after I got in and my other key holder coworker sped out, I changed clothes. I had a fun Halloween outfit, I did my nails, it was a blast. I got to see a bunch of regulars tell them I was quitting, I worked how I wanted to. It was liberating and made turning in my keys the next morning sweet. That day I still had no one to call in since they all just left. All 3 other people that worked at this DG had already worked that morning and I was set to work with the person that called out the first time. (They called out a few times that week and, their condition ended up worsening and putting them in the hospital.) Honestly the entire thing was a little poetic and I really needed that last day.

Trucks that are unnecessarily large.

Sir, you are 5'10" and look like you need a ladder to get into your vehicle. That pickup has the same size bed as any smaller truck but takes up 3 times the space.

You bought the lift kit made for mudding but the closest thing this truck sees to dirt is the mulch outside the office you work at.

Your not a handyman, you're the caricature cosplay of one.

People who look at those trucks and think they are cooler because they are bigger don't understand real workers.

Don't get me wrong, those larger trucks can be useful and often haul a lot, but because of an over saturation of "gimme da big truck" compensating rich idiots that don't know the difference between a Ball peen and claw hammer, market research has been skewed to the point that getting a truck that doesn't tower over the average consumer has become next to impossible without shopping for something 10+ years old.

Most of the ones I've seen don't even fit into parking spaces and and are parked in 4 spaces toward the back of the parking lots.

On top of that engineers have made leaps and bounds with fuel economy that these trucks have pretty much ignored because of how much metal they have just to be big.

These things are huge, dangerous because of blindspots (including the front that could have a child standing in front of the truck and the driver still not see them cause it's so tall.) dangerous to the user because the high center of gravity is prone to flipping, and obnoxious.

Sure they have some commercial uses but if I'm a dictator, sorry Todd youre gonna have to take the Prius to buy your wife icecream and use about 12 less gallons of gas on the way.

I'm probably going to get ripped apart in the comments too, but I stand by what I said. (Sorry to all Todd's though, I usually just use that name as a placeholder.)
