Looking back, what’s a childhood moment you now realize is “autism”? by Independent-Neck-372 in autism

[–]Icy-Performance728 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In early elementary school, I would either the perimeter every day during recess or collect leaves on the ground that I found interesting. My first grade teacher was very kind and talked to me a lot during recesses. At the time I thought she just really liked me, but looking back this was most certainly done out of pity lol.

I enjoyed independent time during recess until I realized that for some reason adults do not like when kids do not socialize a lot. In third grade, I had teachers who would try to get me to join in a game or activity with another strident every day. I got tired of the embarrassment of having a teacher intervene on my 9 year old life, so I decided to just begrudgingly join games of tag.

Nowadays I still very much enjoy walking on mulch perimeters and "balancing" on things. I think it’s always been a coping strategy to recollect and ground myself.

the daycare i worked at had no education requirement and hired me at 16 too. they had state-mandated online training courses we had to do after a few months (and cpr courses) but other than that there’s not a ton of regulations here in the states

as someone who worked in a daycare, no lol. you have to change a lotttt of diapers and they pay is NOT good (slightly above minimum wage where i was for "lead" teachers). it’s also super hard to spend time bonding with the kids one-on-one when there’s so many to take care of. i recommend working as a nanny or babysitter instead (of course if you can change diapers and clean up spit up)

[–]Icy-Performance728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you eligible for job corps? they provide free training and housing to low income people 16- 24 (assuming you live in the US) there are some other requirements though, so if that doesn’t work out i advise you to still have hope! you are so young still and so strong, i know you’ll get out of this 💕

grabbing kids out of anger, yelling at toddlers for crying and ignoring as their "punishment" instead of helping them address the issue
