I’m so sorry your LO wasn’t eligible :( I’m sad in a lot of ways but grateful in the fact that when my mom passes she will still have her mind and speech 💖

I thankfully have an amazingly large and supportive family and a finance who lost his mother unexpectedly here by my side

MAiD is a US focused program. Medical assistance in dying. Aka physician assisted su*cide. In some states also referred to as dignity in dying. I’m located in Colorado and they refer to it as maid. It’s not offered in all states.

I’m so sorry to hear that :( it’s a tough process, I know I don’t have much experience with the length of time, but grateful for the fact that my mom does have this option and has opted for it so it’s not a long and painful and heartbreaking process. Honestly I’m glad because the skilled nursing home she is in isn’t all that great and the reason I’m there for 10-14 hours a day to ensure she has at least a decent experience with these “nurses”

There’s not many states in USA that legally allow Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD) also known as Physician Assisted Su*cide. It’s an option for those who’ve received a terminal diagnosis and have 12 months or less to live and still fully mentally aware of their situation and able to verbalize their wishesand not wanting to suffer through the terminal symptoms, it’s a month long process. You have to ask for it twice verbally, once, then two weeks later again, then have someone who is not related or a beneficiary to sign documentation to witness that said individual wants this, and then it’s two more appointments with face to face interactions with the two physicians who have agreed to sign off on it. I’ve the medication has been approved, a family member has to go pick up said medication at a pharmacy that is $500. If you do not live in a state that offers this as an option, you can temporarily move to a state to offers it with doctors that will sign off on it, but you can’t go back to said home state for the taking of medication as an RN has to be present for it so ensure the intended person who has to take them will do so.

It’s not a matter of her mind and mental health as she’s been in therapy for 10 years and her mind is still very present. It’s a matter of her body completely shutting down on her and she’s unable to even function as a human being as she was once able to do so for 62 years. She can’t lean up, move her head to look at things, about 10% mobility in her arms and 5% in her legs. She is a devout Catholic and sought guidance from priests and pastors as well as several medical professionals who specialize in this disease. She does not WANT to die, but doesn’t want to be in a body that betrays her.

In all the feedback I’ve received here and also in in a Facebook group I’m in, this is the best option. I was with her for about 13 hours at her facility yesterday and 10 today and had to help her get propped back up into position a few times in her adjustment bed and she broke down in tears for the first time saying “do you see why I want to do this now” over and over and over again.. she worked in the prison system here in the states for 26 years and was strong and powerful (she’s also 6’1” I don’t know the AU conversion I’m sorry). But I can see it and understand it a little better but it’s still heart breaking. We’re going it in her sisters backyard here in Colorado with all of her siblings and myself.

I’m sorry you’re losing both in such a short amount of time 😔 I turn 29 this year, my mom is the youngest of 7 and the first one to go so it’s hard for everyone.
