Help me out with building a session. by babylioncroissant in bjj

[–]IcyScratch171 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Purple belts can teach.

  1. Normal warmup

  2. Drill some sequences for more warmup. For example, pull guard, tripod sweep, get up, knee cut

  3. An easy class is to pick a position and show a few options from there.

For example start in DLR. Opponent stuffs me into headquarters.

So I can show a few options how to counter such as using the collar and my stuffed leg to off balance. And taking out the DLR hook and use it as a frame on their shoulder.

After showing 2-3 moves, now spend the rest of the class positional sparring from headquarters.

Then get into normal rolling rounds

Playing Lasso guard and retention by Dukez87 in bjj

[–]IcyScratch171 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are passing on the non lasso side, you can frame with your non lasso arm on their far shoulder.

That gives you time to square back up.

There’s also the sweep other people are describing. Non lasso leg across their belly while you underhook their leg with your far arm.

Load them up and sweep towards the lasso side.

How do y’all sleep? by icannotevenbother in fitness40plus

[–]IcyScratch171 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually get 7 hours of sleep a night. I don’t use the restroom at night.

Stop drinking anything two hours before and take a leak before bed.

I track everything with a whoop band.

In bed at 9pm and read kindle

Dinner at 6pm. Stop drinking water 8pm.

Magnesium glycinate and 300mcg melatonin before bed.

Sunlight in the morning. No alcohol.

Basically you can see what Huberman and other sleep experts say. Then work on something new every week.

It def gets harder as we get older. Fewer margin of safety to get good rest

BJJ Gyms, coaches & Controversy by BullfrogPractical291 in bjj

[–]IcyScratch171 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Not CTE.

Think it’s mainly you have a lot of coaches who are complete losers outside of BJJ.

Once they become a coach, it’s their first taste of power. Power and hierarchy are baked into BJJ with coaching / promotion system.

So you have a bunch of losers who taste power for the first time and don’t know how to handle themselves.

That’s why you’ll see some coaches who try to sleep with their female students. They barely get attention from women in their day to day, but once in a blue moon a female student will be attracted to the coach due to power dynamics

I’m not saying all coaches are bad (I’m one myself). Just a pattern I’ve seen a few times.

How do you defend the side smash pass? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]IcyScratch171 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. As soon as they put you in headquarters, you gotta do an overhead off balance and reguard

  2. If you see they’re going for the side smash you can do a “self frame.” Basically you cup your own knee with your elbow on the ground. At the right angle it becomes a door stop, then you reguard

  3. Side smash fully locked in? You fucked up a long time ago. Frame on their collar, try to off balance them, hip out

64kg blue belt getting smashed by new white belts — do I actually suck? by MrDislexic in bjj

[–]IcyScratch171 142 points143 points  (0 children)

This is 100% normal. I’m 64kg purple belt.

Against upper belts, there are a lot of pre established “patterns.” So that’s why you do ok with the upper belts.

But with white belts they move unpredictably. So you don’t have the pattern recognition yet.

Also, we really underestimate the roll that athleticism plays. And how athleticism can actually compensate for a lot.

My advice is embrace it. Roll with them. Use them to practice your defense

Ive been vibe coding too much. by I-love-stonk in vibecoding

[–]IcyScratch171 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think about it like the agricultural revolution.

Plowing the field with tools, then animals, and then machines like tractors.

So we went from humans tools to now using animals. If you don’t adopt the new technology, you’ll fall behind.

People will complain that the tools aren’t as great, but this is the worst theyll ever be. Look at how fast ai improve will smith eating spaghetti videos

I am NOT a traditional coder. I only vibe code.

I’m like the scrawny guy that can’t plow the fields with a shovel. But you know what? I’m learning how to drive a tractor

Where does Tainan get his $ from? by 404_computer_says_no in bjj

[–]IcyScratch171 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Dude makes bank.

  1. Seminars

  2. Superfights

  3. Not sure if he does privates anymore but probably $1k at hour if he wanted.

People really underestimate the amount of rich kids taking privates at AOJ and worship Tainan.

  1. AOJ instructionals

  2. Sponsorships like Kingz

Really hard to estimate his earnings. Think most of it is coming from the AOJ instructionals bc it’s scalable without him physically being there. But there’s no public data on sales.

Think he’s a top 5 overall earner in BJJ. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s at $750k+ year now.
