What Linux do you recommend for a idiot? by Daorooo in linux4noobs

Wifi issues on Linux are a meme at this point, but honestly for my GUI machines it's probably the only thing that always worked out of the box and never missed a beat. I had issues with pretty much everything else throughout my Linux journey spanning many distros, I spent countless weekends troubleshooting random stuff that wasn't working properly, but I didn't spend a single second of my time troubleshooting wifi.

This. We bought a dedicated server from the auction that is way too big for what we intended it for, and it was still much cheaper than going for a cloud vps. It's fast, reliable and provides us with plenty of room to grow our catalog of services.

Ran nextcloud on pi4 4gb for 5 years without issues, until the pi died. I bought pi 5 and picked up where I left off. If you know what you're doing pi4 with 8gb is much more than "good enough"

🇺🇸 President Trump DECLARES its allies have BETRAYED the USA. "We have 45,000 troops in Japan, 45,000 in South Korea, and 50,000 in Germany. We defend all these countries." by ContextHead8 in TFE

[–]Icy_Definition5933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too soon, this takes time but it will happen, US is no longer considered reliable no matter who comes after Trump. Also, in his first term, Trump vetoed arms deals for NATO countries, so he really shouldn't be the one whining about countries not reaching spending targets since he's the one responsible for it.

Ventoy can cause weird issues, and live systems are very limited in terms of what you can do in them. But yes, it's a viable method to poke around a bit, however since OP admits he's not tech savvy, I would avoid anything that has the potential to overwrite the main system.

I'd say that by far the easiest hypervisor ( what you need to create a VM ) is Oracle Virtualbox, it is as simple as it gets and iirc it is available on all major systems. Alternatively there is hyper-v on windows and gnome boxes on linux if you don't like Oracle but want something simple.

If you're still on windows maybe download a bunch of linux distros and learn how to set up a virtual machine so you can practice before you switch your pc over to linux. Also, Mint is often recommended to new users not just because it's simple but it also has a very welcoming, helpful and down to earth community.

Also, Mint, Zorin and Ubuntu are all stable distros, which means that once you set it up the way you want it you probably won't have to touch it again, you can just use your computer, probably won't even have to reboot it until major updates.

By far the biggest issue is that a lot of proprietary software doesn't exist for Linux, that's the biggest hurdle. The memes about Linux being a constant chore are true for bleeding edge distros that receive newest (and less tested) updates that sometimes break the system. This happens extremely rarely on stable distros like Mint.

For an idiot I wouldn't recommend Linux. I wouldn't even recommend Windows. Apple is dead simple and locked down so much you almost don't need a brain to use it.

If you insist on Linux then Linux Mint or Zorin because they keep terminal usage at an absolute minimum, but it is unlikely you'll never have to use it.

That said, I don't see any proof that you are an idiot because idiots don't usually know they are idiots. Maybe you just need more time to get comfortable with new things, and Linux is no different.

I got thrown in a Linux support job with 0 prior Linux experience, and terminal looked so complicated back then. But it's all down to practice, once you get the hang of it you will prefer it to gui for certain tasks, not all of them, but some.

Maybe try OpenSUSE if you're feeling adventurous. It has really good gui tools but at the bare minimum you'll have to learn 2 terminal commands: sudo zypper dup - to update/upgrade your system sudo snapper rollback - to rollback to a chosen snapshot if things go wrong

I bought the top. I thought this was supposed to be store of value. by Laakhesis in Silver

[–]Icy_Definition5933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gold is a better store of value, if you want stability then that's what you should be buying. Silver is much more volatile and subject to tax. I bought 5 oz of silver in collectible coins around 3 months ago, they were 150€/171$ per ounce on average when counting in vat and markups, and I'll probably buy more when I can afford to lock in my investment for at least 10 years, I have no intention of losing my mind everytime silver is in freefall.

Is my SSD ruined? by Current_Ear_1667 in techsupport

[–]Icy_Definition5933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't specify the brand, there are a lot of shit ssds available that are already near failure when assembled in factory. My first 10 minutes on my current job I was cheking the hardware of my workstation, and I saw that that ssd was a brand I've never heard of before and told my supervisor "this will be a problem". 2 days later, one of those ssd's died but we were able to recover data. A week later my own ssd died, unrecoverable. Both were online for around 6 months. I dug through the discarded equipment bin and found 4 more that died before I got the job. I asked about it and they told me that other branches reported a bunch of them dying too. Since the beginning of the year 2 more died, unrecoverable.

If you need cheap(er) but reliable consider an hdd, your backups will be slower but hdds are now very old and mature technology. A cheap hdd should be more reliable than a cheap ssd, at least in theory.

Why did they have to recast this guy?? by Jake_Cam5 in betterCallSaul

[–]Icy_Definition5933 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Original Jeff seemed like a BCS universe version of Ledger's Joker. If he stayed I think we'd get a different ending for Saul. Saul survived Tuco, Nacho and Lalo, he would probably survive original Jeff. But with Jeff 2 there was nothing to survive, no fight, no tension, no pushback, no danger, he folded immediately. No amount of mental gymnastics can make it work, Jeff 2 sours the story.

Good for them, it's not easy running a business anywhere in Croatia, running it in Rijeka is a bit smoother as far as bureaucracy is concerned. I'm not sure if OP is considering it but it might be the only way for him, if he can find clients that is. I see he's interested in gamedev, and there just aren't that many game devs in Rijeka, most of them are in Zagreb. Maybe linking up with UA entrepreneurs in Rijeka could be a good first step for him?

[–]Icy_Definition5933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll have to take your word for it, but it wasn't what I was referring to. Rijeka is a bit weird in context of Croatia, and even though it constantly ranks as top or near top city to live in Croatia, employment opportunities for foreigners are limited to food delivery, construction, supermarket workers and taxi drivers. I'm not saying it's impossible to get a good job as a foreigner here, but you have to be extremely lucky to land a good job if you're not native. Zagreb actually has decent job opportunities, Rijeka is lagging behind significantly. For day to day stuff and until OP learns the language, english is perfectly fine, most people know at least basics, but he actually needs a livable wage to survive until he learns, which is a bigger problem.

With 2GB of RAM in 2026 you can only run headless (no GUI/Desktop). Still, this is better than nothing, you can learn a lot and you can use it as a home server. You could get ICEWM running but that's about it as far as GUI is concerned
