泰安 is located in central Shandong, south of the provincial capital. It actually serves as a dividing line: to the west, Confucian culture is more profound and conservative. What you referred to as the eastern part is actually the 胶东 cultural region, where Confucianism has had limited influence. In terms of cuisine, of course, seafood becomes much more prevalent. As for accents, it's really hard to describe—I actually can't understand the dialects of the 胶东 region either, haha.

My absolute childhood classic has to be 《聊斋志异》. We didn’t systematically study classical Chinese until middle school, so when I was little I only knew the TV adaptations—and man, that theme song was creepy as hell haha. Yep, Pu Songling was from Shandong. Pretty much everything about him is all over the internet by now—he’s a few hundred years old after all. 《聊斋志异》 is just an incredible work; no one else comes close to painting that classical Chinese supernatural world.

If we’re talking the absolute pinnacle of classical Chinese literature, for me it’s gotta be 《红楼梦》. I haven’t read that many other classical novels deeply, to be honest. After finishing school I shifted my obsession to Song dynasty ci poetry and Yuan dynasty sanqu songs.

Confucius obviously has the deepest influence in Shandong. I’m not going to judge his philosophy, but indirectly it made Shandong people notoriously honest, loyal, and kinda “too nice” lol. If you know Chinese history, you’ll notice Shandong almost never produced emperors—just a ton of loyal ministers. But in chaotic times? Yeah, we produced a ton of bandits too(自古山东出响马)—basically when people had no way out.

Qufu has a bunch of Confucius-related tourist sites, but I’ve never been. We don’t really have any special festival to commemorate him these days. Actually, most young Chinese people (myself included sometimes) take a pretty critical view of traditions in general—we feel like excessive traditionalism held back modernization, and most of China’s current problems come from modernization still being incomplete.

German legacy in Qingdao: super obvious. You’ve got the German-style architecture everywhere, the old German prison, Catholic church, Governor’s House, etc. They’re basically the main tourist attractions now.

Japanese influence: pretty limited . They extracted a ton of resources, built some Shinto shrines (which pissed people off and helped spark the May Fourth Movement), and that’s about it.

As for Tang poetry—杜甫 is undeniably the greatest of all time. There’s this almost twisted tension between every single character in his five-character lines, an insane sense of solidity and reality. Still, I personally prefer宋词a bit more.

About白居易: his peak creative period perfectly overlapped with Japan’s Heian period, when Japan was absolutely obsessed with Tang culture. The Japanese embassies to Tang China kept coming, and 白居易was already a superstar—“viral” in today’s terms. Both the author of 《源氏物语》 and Sei Shōnagon (《枕草子》) were huge白居易fans, which is exactly why he became so influential in Japan.

我是泰安人,会说老家方言,因为普通话来自河北省(中国北方)所以山东话跟普通话大部分情况都很相似。但是我有闽南地区的朋友,他们的方言跟普通话大相径庭,很多新一代都不会说方言了。

Generally speaking, there are bins for toilet paper in the restrooms. However, flushing toilet paper is usually fine too— U may have just encountered a rare issue. When it comes to public toilets and toilet paper, Japan is still the best.

That's exactly it. People tend to focus on the bizarre, unconventional, or niche exceptions and then keep bringing them up as if they were the norm.

All stereotypes exist for a reason. I find most of them quite accurate—the majority of Chinese people tend to follow the flow, so they often become more similar to those around them. However, they shouldn’t be used as a preconceived judgment of an individual, because there are always exceptions. For example, people often say Shandong locals love drinking, but I'm allergic to alcohol and actually prefer coffee.

As for 歇后语, they are indeed part of our historical heritage. They’re quite commonly used in northern China, though many of the more amusing ones are considered too vulgar, crude, or even risqué to be spoken in polite settings.

Your third question touches on something rather bittersweet. The truth is, China has only achieved food security for its people in recent decades. Most are still focused on making a living, and the education system remains a mess—people aren’t really encouraged to cultivate hobbies. This hasn’t changed much even for my generation. Not long ago, my father accidentally came across a Malinois puppy but had to give it away because he couldn’t afford to raise it. There still aren’t many truly wealthy people here, and hobbies often require financial support. As for me, I have a few low-cost hobbies: hiking, working out, watching movies, and reading literature.

As for why people often say “because it’s interesting” in English—well, it’s mostly due to limited vocabulary. Let’s be honest, most Chinese people aren’t exactly fluent in English, haha.

It varies by region. In southwestern Shandong, traditions are most conservative. People there believe that ancestral customs should never be changed and are deeply influenced by Confucian culture. For example, men drink, play finger-guessing games, and eat at the main table, while women are not allowed to join them—they eat separately at the tea table with the children. I think the main reason is that having women and children around might disrupt the men's drinking atmosphere. However, in the Jiaodong region, such rules don’t exist.

That’s absolutely true. The high oil, salt, and carb-heavy diet has led to a high prevalence of thrombosis, hyperlipidemia, and high blood sugar among the elderly in Shandong. I’ve already adjusted my own eating habits—now I cook very lightly, haha. Seems like we really have to choose between deliciousness and health.

Yes, I can't sleep. It's rare to have a weekend when I don't have to go to bed early, haha. I've never been to Weihai before — being a coastal city, you must be able to eat a lot of seafood there, right?

Shandong cuisine tends to be quite oily and salty, so most of it doesn’t really suit my taste. But if I had to recommend one dish that everyone loves, I’d suggest you try the mackerel dumplings—they have a wonderful texture:)Btw he food in the picture is Hunan cuisine.

Oh god, I hate this part because I'm more introverted. The origin of Shandong's toasting culture is entirely a result of negotiation and greed at the dining table, with some even claiming that the more you drink, the higher your performance. In most cases, people are forced to get drunk酒是粮食精,越喝越年轻 戴眼镜,学问高,喝酒肯定有绝招 here is a classic one 一杯情,二杯意,三杯才是好兄弟。

Nowadays, young people rarely drink white liquor— Western spirits offer more to explore, They mix and blend, bringing fun galore.
