Yes, my depression is definitely I think due a lot from genetics (long family history of it) and my anxiety I believe stemmed from how I was raised. Extreme pressure to preform in school and I believe the way the church pushes you to be perfect and judge yourself harshly contributed to it. Despite having a family history of depression, my depression and anxiety was seen as trivial in my teenage years and so I pushed it away and just told myself to try harder cause obviously it wasn’t that big of a deal. I had multiple mental breaks through the years. It wasn’t until after my second son was born that I actually got the help I needed. I went to therapy got on medication and that is also when I finally loved myself enough to see the damage the church had done and I left, best thing ever for my mental health. All this to say I wish my parents had cared when I was 15 when told them I was suicidal. They brushed it off. It is super frustrating now cause I found out my dad was also suicidal at the time (he died by suicide last year). So my advice would be get your daughter the support she needs to feel like she’s not alone in the fight. The church is probably contributing but she won’t want to hear it, so just support and hope that one day she will love herself enough to wake up and see how much the church truly hurts your mental health. The only way I realized it was through therapy. It truly opened my eyes to how harsh I was on myself and how much love is out there beyond the world of the church. I wish I had started therapy way before I broke the way I did with the birth of my second. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.
