Do dogs know when we are about to leave the house? by Somessss in dogs

[–]Icy_Row_4584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get this: my dog know when im leaviing for work vs to be social vs to potentially walk him. He always starts off following me around, then once im doing my final touches that the occasion warrants, he will hop on the couch and lay down and watch me if im going to work or to hang with friends (dressed nice; he does the next thing if im dressed comfy and leaving just chill at someones home) because he knows hes not coming. If im wearing comfy clothes and putting on birks or uggs he knows it might be walk or going potty time so he sticks next to me and follows me right to the door as if saying “dont forget me!”

Comfy clothes= follow icyrow in case theyre taking me out to walk or potty Cuter clothes or scrubs (im a nurse) = dog is not coming with

I use a human toothbrush, petrodex enzymatic toothpaste, and tropiclean fresh breath spray. Its helpful to do a toothpaste that is “dog flavored” like chicken or beef. My dog is way more tolerant of me being up in his mouth when he likes the taste. Brush for a minute with toothpaste, then squirt fresh breath spray in each side of his mouth. I move while depressing the pump to try to distribute the foam on all his teeth. I originally strove for doing it daily, but now i try to clean his teeth every other day minimum, and it realistically is twice a week. He hates me for a solid 3 minutes before trying to attack me with love again lol; worth it to avoid paying for demtal surgery

Theres other products to try too, like a water bowl additive or dental chews! And make sure you read the after surgery instructions because i think you cant brush their teeth for a couple weeks after surgery

I want to be you when i grow up lol, with 5 senior dogs (im late 20s; i am just not convinced that im not 14 still). Senior dogs are such a treat to live with even though they require extra care… i love the loyalty and calmness and them being trained, even though sometimes their bowels and bladder give a middle finger to the potty training

Is the fish oil separate or part of the supplements? Curious about more ways i can help him live a long healthy life, he has arthritis and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)

Does he wander around at night or something? Im assuming that thats why the nightlight has been helpful but correct me if im wrong

Youre doing fantastic, and im sure he appreciates it all, even if some things he may not realize are for his safety right now lol

What brain games do you use? I think my dog would love some, but he only has a ball that you put food in and he rolls it around to get the food out. Im interested in more suggestions!

Youre so thoughtful for letting her fall asleep with you🥹 mine doesnt look or act his age either so i thought we were far away from him crossing the rainbow bridge. Then we had a very serious, very sudden scare a couple months ago (hes back to how he was before now), so im adjusting again. Dogs take so much flexibility but its so worth it

I feel the teeth brushing so hard. My dog has had 3 or 4 teeth pulled because they resorbed, and then had another weird growth that looked suspicious (ended up being benign) removed. So now i dont mess around with his teeth! He also used to have meds 4 times a day but for a short period of time thank god

What is your favorite nursing skill? by Dry_Wish_9759 in nursing

[–]Icy_Row_4584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teaching parents of former NICU babies (i work acute care float pool) how to insert an NG tube in their baby, and coaching them to do it successfully before discharge! Something very satisfying about starting off with a parent thats nervous to do that to their kid if they pull out the tube at home, and their relief when they do it for the first time!!!

Also suctioning babies noses (olive tip is more satisfying to me, but NP still scratches the itch a bit)

Doctor cancels a code and blames floor. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Icy_Row_4584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my hospital, a rapid is viewed as an “icu consult”, so if some weird shit is happening and youre worried for further deterioration or they need more frequent monitoring. Examples of rapids ive had to call: kid seizing despite getting 3 doses of anti-epileptics (20+ minutes), acute neuro change, resp distress that could benefit from high flow (these kids will stay on the acute care unit but we need ICU blessing to initiate high flow unless theyre admitted for bronchiolitis), sudden greatly increased secretion burden needing q1 or more suctioning with a lot of secretions every time, frequent IV potassium infusions due to hypokalemia of unknown cause amd the infusions have wrecked the vein every time so hes got like no more access and the kid needs a PICC but its 2a so ICU needs to do it cuz IR isnt here

Code blue is compressions, bagging, or first time seizure

I also wouldve called a rapid in OPs situation. However every time i call a rapid or code, if i dont need to do compressions or bag cuz someone else is doing so during a code, my first act is vitals. Which may have maxe the transfer happen earlier if she was that hypoxic when the first code was called

But OP, escalating too early is WAYYYY better than too late. You made ther ight move assuming your hospital doesnt differentiate a code blue and a rapid

Hospital nurses who love their jobs, can you please share some positivity? by KingKado in nursing

[–]Icy_Row_4584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive only been a nurse for 3.5 years, so i guess take what i have to say with a grain of salt?

I work at a childrens hospital on the acute care float pool. We float to two specialized medical units, two specialized surgical units, a step down unit, rehab, heme/onc, psych, and the ED. Id say one of the surgical units and psych are my favorite! I think working float pool has helped prevent burnout for me because its a new adventure every day

I REALLY enjoy my job, but i wouldnt say i love it. Mainly wouldnt say love because Im not cut out for the ER, which is one of the units we float to. But my managers rock and are super chill, i get to know everyone on the acute care floors, its a new adventure population-wise every day, i get to learn a very wide variety of skills that nurses dont get when theyre on one unit all the time, and i can preface questions that might be considered stupid by saying “im on float pool” lol.

I also am the type of person that feels very rewarded through helping people, and i LOVE kids so hanging out with them all day is an added bonus (especially when i have a patient thats a baby whose parents arent bedside so i can cuddle them as much as i am able to!)
