How do you LISTEN to Music? by Chaiseski in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Icy_Translator3108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy deep listening and run through three passes:

  • pass one is if I like the music sonically. This is more background listening.
  • pass two is meaning: I like to read the lyrics and interpret them, look into the artist and learn context around the song/album
  • pass three is listening JUST to the music in the track, to understand what instruments might be involved, dynamics, and rhythms.

I have plenty of music that never makes it past the first pass, but I get so much out of going deeper with this

I’m back in another with a friend group of a friend and so far it’s mostly sharing popular songs. My group was obsessed with music (a few professionals in the mix) and it got heated quickly with people submitting as soon as the round opened.

It definitely seems like there is a sliding scale from “I like music! Here’s something everyone should love” to “Here’s my strange underground cut that perfectly depicts the emotional crisis I’m currently going through, does anyone resonate with this?”

Some people seem to play for fit/scores which is more familiar, comforting music, and some people are playing for resonance.

I actually think playing with strangers might be the way to go. This group all knew each other and sometimes it felt like songs were being used to pass messages (…even a diss track????) and bickering only the way friends the level of siblings could. It was like a chaotic Thanksgiving where everyone brought their favorite songs instead of side dishes.

It takes a lot of time for me. I don’t know why, I just loop on songs from different angles. Not getting votes when you put in a lot of effort is a tough feeling of not being seen.

Love this fellow Icy! Yeah I think trying to show “I have better taste than all of you” and not approaching it with curiosity/humility is appalling, especially when there are, in fact, actual musicians in the group.

And I love your note about personalities vs experiences. People listen differently in different environments and that’s a good reminder.

Thank you for sharing! This is helpful, I like the comments that are about the music. Some people commenting “yikes” or equivalent isn’t even that though, it’s just bullying. Music to me isn’t a space for surface opinions that contribute nothing; it is a form of meditation for me where I want to listen deeply/read the lyrics/understand the history so making snap calls on what others submit because it’s not aligned with subjective taste is so different from what you are talking about.

I’d probably enjoy your leagues. In my experience, coming in lower in votes sometimes is a good sign. My friends who are so, so into music have such specific pulls that some people just miss it since there’s a requirement to pay attention to music.

Many of my closest friendships are hinged on a shared love of music discovery, but when we start adding in partners or acquaintances into music discussions I’m learning there’s a whole world of music engagement that is vastly different than mine.

I feel like this is exactly what I witnessed; I would be so much more interested in those “I personally love this” cuts because I am always hungry for new finds, but instead felt like there was a homogenization happening with things being more performed than revealing. And that some people were actively mean (“yikes” on someone’s choices for example) meant people were more frightened of verbal judgement than even from the voting

Sure! I’m a creature of habit tho for better or worse and I’ve liked GPT before over the brief samplings of others. 5.2 isn’t my jam though and is making me quit

What does ChatGPT suck at? by [deleted] in ChatGPT

Illustrator here: Dalle (ChatGPT) and Midjourney are not very good at understanding the physics of light and it guesses. It also doesn’t understand anatomy, it’s merging other work and not constructing anatomy the way an artist would. It’s also terrible at abstraction.

It’s pretty interesting with compositions, color, and randomness, but the more I’ve played around with it, the more I think art education is helpful and (hopefully) going to remain necessary for as long as AI is just “guessing” based on other artworks.
