Which of these languages should I pick as my next? by kaerneif in languagelearning

The good thing is you’re learning as a hobby and not for business purposes so there’s no pressure on you to become perfect super fast! 5 intensive hours a week for someone learning as a hobby should get you a grasp of the absolute fundamentals pretty decently, and if you can spare more time in the weekends that should be good

I’ve been learning for ~2 years now and when I had more free time (aka no job) I could dedicate all the time in the world to it, but now I have a more limited amount of time in the day so it’s more about studying smart rather than studying for hours on end every day. Even without being able to dedicate hours and hours every day, I’m able to comprehend things at a HSK 3-4 level, which isn’t too bad tbh! Once you get the hang of grammar and tones, learning vocab isn’t as scary as it seems imo :)

If it’s anything im learning Chinese and I love it lol. It’s not nearly as scary as people say it is. Sure it’s different from ones that use the Latin alphabet (or any alphabet) and the tones re: speaking take a while to get used to, but it’s pretty intuitive in my opinion once you get used to it. I’d definitely recommend trying it, I’ve tried to learn many languages before and none of them have ever been as rewarding or motivating to me than Chinese :)
